If you think the conservative "Tea Party" movement is daunting, take a look at a new report issued by the Department of Homeland Security that says right-wing extremism is on the rise throughout the country.

In the report (a full copy of which is below), officials warn that right-wing extremists could use the bad state of the U.S. economy and the election of the country's first black president to recruit new members to their cause.

In the intelligence assessment issued to law enforcement last week, Homeland Security officials said there was no specific information about an attack from right-wing extremists in the works.

The agency warns that an extended economic downturn with real estate foreclosures, unemployment and an inability to obtain credit could foster an environment for extremists to recruit new members who may not have been supportive of these causes in the past.

In November, law enforcement officials were seeing more threats and unusual interest against then- President-elect Barack Obama than ever before.

ThinkProgress notes some key take-aways from the report:

Anti-immigration: “Rightwing extremist groups’ frustration over a perceived lack of government action on illegal immigration has the potential to incite individuals or small groups toward violence. If such violence were to occur, it likely would be isolated, small-scale, and directed at specific immigration-related targets.”

Recruiting returning vets: “Rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

Gun-related violence: “Heightened interest in legislation for tighter firearms...may be invigorating rightwing extremist activity, specifically the white supremacist and militia movements.”

The report is getting a lot of push back from angry conservative bloggers like Michelle Malkin:

By contrast, the piece of crap report issued on April 7 is a sweeping indictment of conservatives. And the intent is clear. As the two spokespeople I talked with on the phone today made clear: They both pinpointed the recent "economic downturn" and the "general state of the economy" for stoking "rightwing extremism." One of the spokespeople said he was told that the report has been in the works for a year. My b.s. detector went off the chart, and yours will, too, if you read through the entire report -- which asserts with no evidence that an unquantified "resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment and radicalizations activity" is due to home foreclosures, job losses, and...the historical presidential election.

Moe Lane from RedState.com asks "Are you a Rightwing Extremist, too?":

Why? Well, it's a document that discusses the potential threats that we can expect from "rightwing extremists" (no hyphen, for some reason) in the coming months; there's the usual stuff about guns, illegal immigration, and disgruntled war veterans, plus the new wrinkle of our having elected an African-American President. The report concludes, unsurprisingly, that we have to worry more about "lone wolves and small terrorist cells" than anything else.

I find it interesting that many would just dismiss this as only talking about the extreme rightwing groups. That is true on the face of it but we all know that these people on the other side are just as guilty also. Those in power tend to make things go their way at the expense of all of us. There are those who are extreme that we should watch out for because some of them are not using common sense, but then we should really watch out for those who want to decide for us what is best. Hitler did it that way. He came into power and at first did a lot of good for the working man but then that power went to his head and well you know the rest of the story. No matter how secure we think our government is it only takes a few to "set aside" the constitution in the name of protecting this nation in order to do what they really want. Now you can go ahead and call me a radical but you would be way off the mark. I am a centrist but I try to use common sense when it comes to what can really happen. Just wait and see what happens in the next few weeks, months, or years. Remember, Joe Biden said that something major will happen in the first 6 months to test Obama. Do you suppose.......nah!

What the heck is wrong with conservatives that are upset about right wing extremism comments? Do you understand what they are according to FBI? Why are you trying to turn it into some conspiracy by liberals to target conservatives? I am a democrat and have many conservitive friends, none of them Right Wing Extremists. WTF

Lets not forget this was released under Bush not Obama so no blaming him.

http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terrorism2002_2005.pdf

FBI Report on Terrorism 2002 - 2005 released in 2007.

"The terrorism preventions for 2002 through 2005 present a more diverse threat
picture. Eight of the 14 recorded terrorism preventions stemmed from right- wing extremism, and included disruptions to plotting by individuals involved with the militia, white supremacist, constitutionalist and tax protestor, and anti- abortion movements."

"The majority of domestic terrorism incidents from 1993 to 2001 were attributable to the left-wing special interest movements the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). Right-wing extremism, however, primarily in the form of domestic militias and conservative special interest causes, began to overtake left-wing extremism as the most dangerous, if not the most prolific, domestic terrorist threat to the country during the 1990s. In contrast to the ALF and the ELF, which have pursued a philosophy that avoids physical violence in favor of acts of property damage that cause their victims economic harm, right-wing extremists pursued a qualitatively different method of operation by targeting people."

I just read through this document. Guys, it is about extremist groups. I am amazed at the number of conservatives who seem to think it is about themselves. Are you ALL members of the white supremacist and anti-government organizations? I was thinking that you were not.

Can you say the fearful, paranoid right? After years of trying to convince everyone else to be afraid all the time, the right is now terrified of crossing a right-wing radio entertainer, one term governor or failed plumber.

Buy they sure talk a tough game of torture and all, but where was Cheney to defend the soldiers who have been court marshaled and sent to prison for Abu-Gharaib? Now we know without doubt that he knew and signed off on those very measures the soldiers were ordered to use, and that those soldiers were operating under his direct orders. And he let them go to jail without a peep. That evil bonehead continues his Vietnam record, which was that he was an extreme hawk, just so long as it wasn't him sitting on his can in a rice paddy, taking incoming. Dick has proved over and over again that he is not unhappy so long as there are others to do the bleeding, dying and dirty work for him.

Now that's abuse of the military!

I think the thing to most focus on is the term rightwing. That's why most conservatives are alarmed about this. Anytime the left speaks about those with across-the-aisle views, they use the term rightwing. The point that DHS should have made is to view radicals or extremists in general. If you look at terrorism as defined today you'll see similarities between those like Tim McVeigh and William Ayers, the white supremisists and the Black Panthers among many others.

What DHS needs to focus on is simple. Domestic Terrorism no matter the political affiliation. There is NO need to call out any ideology, political stance, armed forces history, economic status, etc.

One thing to think about: Why would the DHS use the term terroist to describe the 'rightwing extremists' yet drop the term when formally discussing Al Qaeda?

"Right wingers pose a graver threat to America than Al Q.aida"

Remember that time that conservative group of American right wing extremist knocked down the world trade centers on 9/11 and attacked the Pentagon?

Damn those right wingers. Damn them all.

You cast a little too wide a net, there. Unless you meant to say "Right Wing Extremists" (your words indicated ALL right wing individuals), your attitude is precisely what the conservatives are worried about. I can absolutely guarantee you that not all conservatives are building bombs in their basements.

If the left is in power then the right-wingers will be on a DHS watch list. If the right is in power, then the left-wingers will be on a DHS watch list. But both the right and the left have the same goal: a strong central oligarchy. The only difference is what aspects of our lives that they want to control.

You right-wingers have given us the draconian laws that imprison or kill thousands. Thousands have been killed, millions have been jailed, and billions has been spent on the drug war and still the number of people using drugs has remained the same. I will stand beside you in support of free enterprise and capitalism, but not in your legislation of morality, or your imprisonment of millions for victimless crimes.

You left-wingers have given us progressive policies that enslave us to government. Millions are on welfare and billions has been spent on the war on poverty and still the percentage of the population in poverty has remained the same. I will stand beside you in your fight for personal freedom and choice, but not in your redistribution of wealth, your persecution of Christians, or your confiscation of guns.

I know you all mean well, but consider what you intend to leave our children and grandchildren. Do you really want to leave them with Authoritarianism, Fascism, Nazism, Communism, Marxism, Socialism, or any other form of –ism?

What the heck? Combat veterans ARE attractive to extremist groups. I have a brother who is a military veteran, and he is often approached at the local pistol range by local yahoos wanting him to join their militia. (He's a gun enthusiast, and is a VERY good shot.)

At what point did the report say that extremist groups were attractive to combat veterans? Don't you have to be able to READ before you can file a lawsuit? Guys, it's called English. It's a language. Maybe you could get a tutor.

Very few in this country will disagree that electing the first black president is an historic and momentous occasion and all Americans should be proud that Race is no longer a barrier to achieve any dream in America. For if a Black man can achieve the highest office in the land then there is no longer an excuse of race as a limiting factor to obtain that of which one may be desirous. As such, we should remove the references to race of our president. It is not his race that is creating anger. It is his policies.

Beware all... an excuse of extremism may provide Obama with his reason to create a "marinus van der lubbe" moment and further limit individual rights.

I am a constitution defending, Mayflower descending, Declaration of Independence Signer descending, freedom loving, libertarian supporting, god believing, flag waving, illegal immigration opposing, tax paying, disabled American veteran… If Obama wants to label me a rightwing extremist then I will wear that label proudly! www.rightwingradical.org - spread the word - if we all wear the label proudly...www.rightwingradical.org

This report itself can incite normal everyday conservative people to unite and standup against this outrage called our government, just our founding fathers did. If there were no illegal aliens in our country, it would free up work for Americans. WAKE AND ORGANIZE US CITIZENS, THIS IS THE BEGGINING OF THE SOCIALIST MOVEMENT SWEEPING THROUGH THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION. WE WILL LOSE OUR RIGHTS ONE AT A TIME. EXCERSIZE YOUR RIGHTS UNDER THE FIRST AND SECOND AMMENDMENTS!!! SPEAK OUT NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!!

Why are so many people suddenly concerned about the content of the DHS report? It repeats data which was produced during the Bush Administration!

For example, see this July 2008 FBI report:

http://cryptome.org/spy-whites.pdf

If YOU were in a position of responsibility within one of our law enforcement agencies, would YOU just IGNORE this data?

The DHS extends the extremists to all who oppose the government such as anti abortionist, anti illegals, and American citizens who are against the governments control over them. That's the difference.

It's amazing the smug (as witnessed last night watching H.Fineman and K. Oberman), arrogance exhibited by the 'elites' in regards to an legitimate American expression---with disgust of our current Federal Govt. and it's machinations. The lack of discipline of our federal bureacracy, and no results evidently from 50-yrs. of welfare handouts and the like has come home 'to roost' as the expression says---and it's amazing it took this long for the citizenery to come alive, exhibit distate and exert some belated steam. And it's not just about the obama administration and Wall St---and the administrations' flaky team of supposed experts (and by the way no paying their 'fair share of taxes')---it's the whole liberal 'govt. first' reaction when issues arise. Economically or otherwise.
More of the same will follow. yesterday was just the start.

Ooops. I guess I'm on J. Napolintona's list of right-wingers!!!!!!!!!!!

There are hate groups in this country who feed off mis-information and out-right deliberate mis-interpretation. There are some in this country who are taking advantage of those groups and using them to grow their numbers in order to win the next election. This is shameful and America should demand that those who are fueling the flames by reporting falsely be exposed for that. Also those who are joining hands with the most extreme of these groups just for political gain, should understand who they are signing on with. It is very hard to stop the ball once it starts rolling down the mountain and the politicians and talk show hosts and some in the media who think they can use these extremists and then walk away, need to do some serious re-thinking. It scares me so, to think what horrible things may happen right here on American soil if this continues the way it is.

I agree that it's very hard to stop the ball once it starts rolling down the mountain.
I want to report two of those groups who are feeding misinformation to the public and and trying to grow their numbers to win the next election. One calls themselves the DNC and the other is called ACORN.
