SEE SUSAN SING FOR AMERICA ON THURSDAY

LONDON -- A middle-aged volunteer church worker with the voice of an angel is Britain's latest unlikely showbiz star.

Susan Boyle, 47, wowed judges and audience alike when she performed on television contest "Britain's Got Talent."

By Tuesday, a video clip of Boyle's performance on Internet site YouTube has been watched more than 2.7 million times.

The unemployed Scot who said she'd "never been kissed" drew titters when she told the judges her ambition was to be a professional singer.

But her soaring rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical "Les Miserables" astonished the show's hard-to-please judges.

They were captivated by the singer from Blackburn in western Scotland. Usually acerbic judge Simon Cowell dubbed her singing "extraordinary." Fellow judge Piers Morgan said her "stunning" performance was "the biggest surprise I've had in three years of this show."

The show, the first in a new series of "Britain's Got Talent," was watched by 11.4 million of Britain's 60 million people on Saturday night.

British bookmakers made Boyle the early favorite to win the series.

She is the latest in a proud tradition of underdogs who win the heart of the British public.

The program, sister show of "America's Got Talent," made a star of its first winner, an unassuming mobile phone salesman named Paul Potts. He wowed audiences with his rendition of the aria "Nessun Dorma" and has become a global recording star since winning the series _ and signing to Cowell's record label _ in 2007.

I kept hearing about Susan Boyle throughout the media and decided to check it out for myself. I first listened this morning and now have listened 5 times since! There are so many wonderful and horrible things about the internet! People are soooo overexposed these days to anything/everything they want to see but the inspiring thing is when we are able to appreciate gifts like Susan's performance from across the globe. I will never meet her or perhaps never hear her sing another song but watching a middle-aged woman get the confidence to pursue her dream, if only for one glorious moment in time, was inspirational. During times like these with deep economic reprocussions, war-torn chaos, and so much uncertainty in the world, what a wonderful second to witness one soul step out on a stage in front of millions and take a chance! I wish all reality tv shows would stay focused around positive promotions like this and continue encouraging the masses to "dream" big!

Why is Scottish news on the England page? England and Scotland are two different countries (they are part of a union, called the UNited Kingdom - so are Wales and Northern Ireland).

Hearing Boyle for the first time was like hearing Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) for the first time! Golee! Surprise! Surprise! Shazam!

To take nothing from Susan Boyle's raw talent, it must be said that this is not a surprise to the judges. There are many hoops to jump and level to pass before getting to the stage, and there is no doubt the judges knew.

I just loved watching that. It was just great watching her to do so well despite the preconceived attitudes. I just love stories like that. She is great. I think she deserves every bit of her success. I just love seeing people like her do so well! I am going back to Utube and watch it again.

A complete set-up. The entire thing was scripted from beginning to end. A new gimmick, thought up by T.V. producers to play on our heartstrings, and to sell records.

If you believe that Ms. Boyle magically appeared out of the blue, fully panoplied, I own a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell you at a very affordable price...

Why shouldn't a forty eight year old woman be able to sing a song? Kirsten Flagstadt was performing Isolde at the Met in her mid-sixties...and as for unattractive people not being expected to have talent, give me a break. Just look at photos of the golden age opera singers, and we'll compare notes. Ms. Boyle looks not unlike Lotte Lehmann, one of Richard Strauss's favorite sopranos. She would never have won a beauty pageant, but she was a legendary singer.

Ms. Boyle has a pleasant enough timbre - sugary and school marmish, in the mould of Julie Andrews. She sings in rhythm and she sings in tune.

As much could be said for any number of 48 year old women, performing in church choirs the world over.

It's devious how they did it, too.

They had her wait 47 years, just to spring her on an unsuspecting public.

Clever, really.

Simon has something else planned for 2052. Wait until you see!

That was incredible. Honestly. I am stunned. She is amazing.

Suck THAT to all the people snickering and making faces! Ha! I was SO annoyed seeing that and SO HAPPY that she shut them ALL up!

Yay!

I'm crying like a baby right now! I can't believe this! Oh my God, that was SO beautiful! The way she ignored the laughter and the criticism and just put it all out there on that stage ... that was amazing. I could certainly learn from her example.

I first saw this video here, on Huffington, late in the evening on April 16th and, like everyone else, was blown-away. I watched it a dozen more times throughout the day on the 17th, becoming still-and-everso choked-up with each viewing. Then I decided not to watch it again for a few days to see what my reaction would be after letting the first flush of incredible emotion subside.

It's now late in the evening of the 19th, and I just watched it again. And, again, I am reduced to tears by Susan's performance of 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Miserables.

I said it before, and I'll say it again... a stunning, stellar, soul-piercing performance.

Yeah, folks... Susan's as real as real can get. Her shining star has blessed us all with the timeless reminder that dreams can, and do, come true, that hope does spring eternal, and that having faith in our own light is the precious conviction we must all recognize in ourselves and in each other.

God bless this woman for restoring that in me.

FaireMaiden, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've expressed here about Susan's performance. We need her art now more than ever I believe. How blessed we are to have such an authentic role model to remind us we all have gifts to share if only we choose to.

Here's to Susan...three grateful cheers and a heart made lighter by your voice, your lovely presence, and your spunk! :-) Thank you for being a woman of courage.

I don't think it was her appearance--or just that--that made everyone underestimate her. She strikes them, I think, as simple, or rustic, or unsophisticated. I hope I wasn't rolling my eyes, but I was prepared to be embarrassed for her. She was in over her head, I thought.

But her singing reveals the opposite, and you hear it immediately. It *is* sophisticated. It isn't just that she has a good voice, but she excellent control of phrasing and tone and dynamics. I can't remember the last time a performance gave me goosebumps.

I was amazed enough, and so touched by the audience's response, that I've watched at least 10 times... and counting...

I just watched her video and truly enjoyed her performance. Susan has a great sense of humor and a wonderfull talent. I would buy her CD now if she had one. She is a lovely person and should only have a makeover if she feels it is necessary. You go girl an good luck.

Susan Boyle - you go girl! I just love me a good underdog story. That video just gives me chills every time I see it and even though I am not real familiar with the song, I just love the reaction of all the young "pretty" people snobs getting a taste of some real talent. So there!
