Human slavery! Why are we over there when these peoples true beliefs are so different from ours?

Sounds like something Judge Bybee would have written into the law doesn't it..?

God! Why are our soldiers fighting there? They will never treat women with respect they deserve. The religious fanatics view women as property and treat them terribly. Ignorance and fear by these men is astounding to me.

Granted, as pointed out in the article:
“The law is milder than the severe restrictions imposed by the Sunni Muslim Taliban, who banned all women and girls from any work or study, and from leaving the home without a male relative.”

Then again, a mere compound fracturing of combined femur, tibia, and fibula *is* milder than *displaced* compound fractures of the combined femur, tibia, and fibula.

When a person is severely restricted by any person, place, thing, or condition from doing and/or being, the *degree* to which they are restricted, is immaterial.

This is a cultural right - we should let the Afgan people decide this for themselves. Why should we impose our beliefs on other countries and religions?

I'm not sure how we could impose our beliefs on the Afghanis even if we wanted to. There is no reason, however, for us to withhold our opinions of this and other quaint middle eastern customs such as marrying 8 year olds.

Another of your games. Shall we call this type the "Baiting Game"? Last time it was Iranian drones. You believe what you have written here just about as much as you believe that Iran should have enriched Uranium.

While we might be able to impose our beliefs, we can certainly be repulsed by this behavior and respond accordingly. While you might have the right to do these things, you do not have the right to expect us to take you seriously.

Why not ask those women, who happen to be part of that culture if they think rape is appropriate. It is more barbaric and totally ignorance rather than a cultural right.

PLEASE remember that the Afghan *people* are NOT the laws that have been (or might be) imposed upon them!

And please remember that, just as here in the US, religion and law can either work hand-in-hand to strengthen a society and culture, *or* they can tear it apart. As a rule, the less restrictive the law, the better it is able to accommodate *both* the law and religion in strengthening the society and culture.

In the case of the proposed “Shiite Personal Status” laws, an attempt is being made to codify the religion into Law of the Land as a means of *strengthening* the centuries-old culture and society. That attempt, as we can all see from *our* vantage point, is *exceedingly* detrimental to all Shiite women; for that reason, we are all aghast and horrified that it might be implemented.

Again, PLEASE do NOT judge the Afghan *people* by the laws some would impose on them. And as you do that, please keep in mind that we have people right here in the US who would be more than happy if *their* interpretation of religion, *did* become the law of *our* land.

As we watch out from a distance for shenanigans from Ayatollahs in Afghanistan, we must also keep *our* ‘christian’ [lower case “c” on purpose] Ayatollahs from codifying *their* shenanigans on *our* citizens, too.

An Ayatollah is an Ayatollah is an Ayatollah. . . no matter *what* ‘religion’ they wish to codify into the Law of the Land.

If that happened in the U.S., there would be mass starvation.

I believe 50 years go martial rape was legal in Britain too. Anyway, I really feel sorry for these women. But I see no future for Afghanistan. It's always been a messed up place.
