CHICAGO — Oprah Winfrey sent her first "tweet" during a taping of her television talk show.

The audience cheered as Winfrey typed "ASHTON IS NEXT" on a laptop Friday morning and sent the message on the social networking site Twitter.

Winfrey was welcomed onto the site with messages from George Stephanopoulos, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon and Shaquille O'Neal. She noted that Ashton Kutcher had 1 million "followers" on the site, surpassing CNN, and spoke with the actor over Skype, an Internet communications service.

According to Twitter, Winfrey already has 75,000 followers, which are people who have requested to see her tweets.

Later in the show, she added tweets of thanks for the welcome and updates about her dog getting its rabies vaccine.

That warm feeling she's talking about is probably her peeing on herself in all this excitement. I know I did.

Why are Americans such ill informed ya-hoo's? Becuase they care more about Oprah's tweets than Giethner propping up zombie banks.....who cares about this drivel?

You don't care but you care enough to say that you don't care?

Oprah and most of the other "celebrites" on twitter are the most boring, self-endulgent people to follow.

OK - I admit it - I just joined Twitter because Oprah did it.

There, I said it!

BFD. Woman is irrelevant.

Actually Oprah's the most relevant person on the face of the planet. Time magazine has named her one of the world's 100 most influential people a record SIX TIMES. Yale sociologist Josh Gamson showed that the tabloid talk shows she used to do in the 1980s did more to make gays mainstream than any other 20th century development. Every book she's endorsed tops the best-seller list. She single-handedly made Dr. Phil a star and single handedly put a black man in the white house:

Not only is the woman relevant but I would argue that she's the MOST relevant woman in human history.

What?? She did not signlehandedly put our President in the WH. That's an overstatement if I ever saw one!

The grass roots people who sent in the contributions and went out every weekend to campaign did much more than Oprah did.

The last thing I need is another internet distraction, but if Oprah is there I'll probably check it out.

you sound jealous that this women is smart enough to have figured out how to become a Billionaire at the same time helping people. Why did you even bother to read it, you didn't have your hate mongering for the day.

amen, sheikwil4.
what is it with you haters?
is anyone asking you to join Twitter? Is anyone forcing you to go to the website? Is anyone making you read anyone's postings? Are you being REQUIRED by someone...by anyone...to participate?
Let me answer that question for you:
NO.
Actually, not just no. HELL no.
Does Oprah have to own something to be interested in it and talk about it on her show?
Again, I'll answer: NO.
If you don't care about Twitter...and no one is asking you to...then do yourself a favor:
Anytime you see an article with the word "Twitter" in it....DON'T READ IT.
And while you're not reading it...don't bother to leave your bitter, envious comments.
Go hate somewhere else.
Please.

Twitter: R.I.P. April 17, 2008

Death by celebrity abuse. It was like watching my grandma talk about "the computer." Now Ashton's the epitome of journalism? His long, rambling YouTube videos and Oprah's shocked "ohhh!" in all caps tweet - FAIL.

Well dang. I guess I need to take this Twitter-tween-twap sewiouswy. :) I'll get to it. I ridiculed this yesterday to my partner (we're both pushing 70) and he lit into me saying it has merit. I suppose I'll be seeing you Twits online!! Have a good weekend.
