McClatchy:

A growing number of U.S. intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials have concluded that there's little hope of preventing nuclear-armed Pakistan from disintegrating into fiefdoms controlled by Islamist warlords and terrorists, posing the a greater threat to the U.S. than Afghanistan's terrorist haven did before 9/11.

I thought this is what Pakistan wanted - to be an Islamic State.

No, you are wrong. Not just a greater threat to the u.s.a., but a greater threat to the ENTIRE FREE WORLD.

There are other countries out there that are threat to the ENTIRE FREE WORLD, you know. Some in other parts of the world point out a country that pokes its nose in other countries' affairs.

Watch Robert Greenwald's brilliant new documentary on why the military escalation in Afghanistan will likely lead to further destabilization in Pakistan:

In the near future, expect to see more violence Karachi as Mehsud (Taliban) moves against in the government to retaliate against US drone attacks.

The possibility of a failed state has to be considered, and its all the more reason Obama needs to bring India, Israel, Pakistan and North Korea into a renewed NPT.

All the more reason we must depart the scene and the process. Our arrogance, divisiveness, and derision will do no one any good.
08:05 PM on 04/18/2009
Your "arrogance, divisiveness, and derision" repeated over and over and over does not add to understanding. A mere repetition of a subjective characterization. Consider adding something substantive to the discussion.

The premise that pakistan was created on was bound for inevitable failure. We are seeing the results of it today. It's time to break up this failed state and start from scratch with a new states. Let's free baluchistan, sindhidesh, pashtunistan. All these people deserve to be free from the pakistani punjabi tyranny. Far too long they have been suppressed and taken advantage of.

I think only India can save these poor souls now, like India saved Bangladesh.

and who gets the nukes?
03:43 PM on 04/19/2009
America already has plans in place to secure nuclear sites within Pakistan. At the first sign of collapse you will see the invasion. This is another reason more troops are being sent to Afghanistan.

What was the premise upon which Pakistan was created? Neither Gandhi nor Badshah Khan wanted the separation to occur, both seemed to see the division of Muslims and Hindus to be a personal defeat and irretrievable loss. Did the partitioning actually make it seem no longer necessary to find a way to live together? If so, wasn't partitioning bound to lead to this situation?
07:08 PM on 04/19/2009
Pakistan was created on the premise that Hindus and Muslims cannot co-exist and that Muslims need their own nation to live as one. It first failed in 1971 when it was found out that East Pakistan Muslims can kill 3 million (or 1million according to some) West Pakistan Muslims. That's when India helped liberate West Pakistan from East Pakistan.

It's also failed when it's a fact that more Muslims live in India than in Pakistan. So it shows that Hindus and Muslims CAN co-exist. I think Jinnah did India a big favour by creating Pakistan, because most of the extremists went there.

Of course all the Hindus in Pakistan were ethnically cleansed but Hindus didn't do the same to Muslims in India.

As for your questions... India has had to deal with Pakistan's aggression for the past 60years. The problem is that Pakistan has bigger regional aspirations than it can handle. It must realize that India is the dominant power just because of the overwhelming advantage in population. When it keeps agitating the elephant one of these days it's going to get trampled (kinda like Bangladesh situation). So yes, India has tried to live in peace, but peace is not in Pakistan's interests.

And yes, Pakistan was inevitably going to get burned since is kept playing with fire.

What the article referred to here did not do is analyze who the 4 generals are that are closest to controlling military power in Pakistan. The article also did not point that the Taliban are being squeezed into staying in Pakistan and taking out their sabotage on the military and civilians in the country instead of having a free hand to go into Afghanistan. This is the "chickens coming home to roost" reference being made. In other words, earlier the Pakistan military, even under Musharraf, were either indifferent or actually helping the Taliban in Afghanistan. The 4 generals now in control are pretty much anti-Taliban but it is not easy or fast for that policy to go down the line. It is natural for casual observers to believe that Pakistan is close to meltdown, especially because of the containment strategy being used in the northern area of the country. The military did try to suppress the Taliban up there but it would have required too much violence and found it better to let them have their area. It is not easy to bring out all the important factors involved, but there is an increasing awareness of what is at the bottom of all the problems that Pakistan has to sort out. Obama administration, with Holbrooke and General Petraeus, are figuring out everything.

I hope your optimism is warranted but rue the 2007 decision not to implement permissive action link [PALs] technology across Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.

When historians look back at the W. Bush presidency, this will be the true legacy. When lamenting over why a nuclear device was used against the West or Israel, historians will point to W's abandoning the fight against Taliban in order to settle an old score with Saddam, all the while propping up Masharif in Pakistan. Bush thought he could prove that he was more of a man than his daddy and instead it's epic fail.

"When lamenting over why a nuclear device was used against the West or Israel"

There are such historians in US who defend Hiroshima bombing with the argument that If we wouldn't do it they would have done it. STOP spewing your hypothetical assumptions.

Thinking about it, this could be a good thing.

Muslims are still in denial about the problems in their culture. They're too quick to blame the US and Europe for all their problems. This might be a wakeup call.

Many Pakistanis, and people of Pakistani descent living in Europe are not going to be happy to see the Taliban take over their country. They're going to have to choose a side.
