LAS VEGAS — Miss North Carolina USA Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 on Sunday, beating out 50 other beauty queens in the live pageant televised from Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

The 22-year-old aspiring motivational speaker and entertainer from Wilmington edged out first runner-up Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, of San Diego, and second runner-up Miss Arizona USA Alicia-Monique Blanco, of Phoenix.

"It feels really natural," Dalton said of her win. "I've worked so be here and this has been my lifelong dream and it's finally here. And whoever knew you could win in a turquoise gown?"

Contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia competed in the pageant, aired live on NBC. Contestants were judged by their performance in swimsuit and evening gown modeling contests and their responses to a question asked onstage; unlike the rival Miss America pageant, Miss USA contestants do not perform a talent.

The top 15 contestants worked the stage in white string bikinis designed by pop star Jessica Simpson's swimwear line. Rocker Kevin Rudolf performed his song "Let it Rock," followed by The Veronicas, who performed their single "Untouched" as the top 10 beauties showed off their choice of glittering evening gowns.

Dalton's was a flowing, blue Grecian number that stood out among a series of white gowns.

Her title comes with a year's use of a New York apartment, a public relations team, a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy and an undisclosed salary.

She also will go to the Bahamas in August to compete in the Miss Universe pageant, where American beauties haven't been lucky in recent years. Both Miss USA 2008 Crystle Stewart and her predecessor, Rachel Smith, wiped out on stage during the evening gown competition, becoming accidental YouTube stars.

Asked about the tumble during the show on Sunday, Stewart said it was a lesson in bouncing back from defeat.

"I think it was a true test of my character," said the 27-year-old Texan, who worked to raise awareness for breast cancer as she traveled the globe promoting the beauty contest.

If there is a YouTube moment from Sunday's show, it may be Miss California's answer to a question about legalizing same-sex marriage. The tall blonde stumbled some before giving an answer that appeared to please the pageant audience.

"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," Prejean said. "And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

Some in the audience cheered, others booed. The answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show.

"It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."

Charmaine Koonce, the mother of Miss New Mexico USA Bianca Matamoros-Koonce, argued back.

"In the Bible it says marriage is between Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve!"

The pageant had enjoyed a scandal-free year until earlier this month, when Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza was skewered for a blog posting from a trip to Guantanamo Bay. The entry described having "aloooot of fun" at a base that houses the notorious military prison; it was later deleted from the pageant's Web site.

The contest, which is owned by NBC and reality TV mogul Donald Trump, was hosted by "Access Hollywood" co-anchor Billy Bush and Nadine Velazquez of the NBC sitcom "My Name is Earl." This year's judges included "Saturday Night Live" cast member Kenan Thompson, "Dancing with the Stars" winner Kelly Monaco and gossip blogger Perez Hilton.

Miss Wyoming USA Cynthia Pate, of Casper, Wyo., was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. Jessi Pierson, of Milton, W.Va., was voted Miss Photogenic through an online contest on the Miss Universe Web site.

Organizers said Sunday's show kicks off "Green Week" at NBC. As part of the environmental awareness campaign, the Miss USA crown was designed by a jeweler that specializes in conflict-free and eco-friendly jewels. The crown from Diamond Nexus Labs of Franklin, Wis., is worth $202,000.

I've heard the new Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, speak and she deserves far more criticism for her comments than Carrie Prejean does. Listening to Dalton's interview on Inside Edition, the terms "ditzy" and "witchy" came to mind. She gave the impression of being very arrogant and haughty when she discussed Prejean and Perez Hilton. Also, she seems unable to string words together into a comprehensible sentence. It's hard to believe that this woman wants to make her living as a motivational speaker. Then again, I must admit to being motivated... to smack her across the face for her insolence!

I fail to see the problem with her answer. If they don't want to hear opinions, then don't ask opinions. Anyway, I don't believe it was her opinion that cost her the crown, it was her inarticulate way of talking. It was actually quite awful.

This shouldn't affect the girl who won. To say she would have been second except for the words of Miss California is mean.

Where do all of these contestants get those huge white teeth? It's abnormal. Do every one of them have Lumineers on their teeth? A dentist recently tried to talk me into those things ~~~ $1000 per tooth! No way!

What is wrong with what she said? She was asked her personal opinion and she gave it.

So let me get this 'straight', you are only worthy of something if you thoughts are aligned with 'gay' culture? I hate to say it, but they asked her a question and she answered it honestly.

""It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are.""

...honestly, that comment is why she SHOULD be runner up. She stood up for something she believed in her heart is right. It would have been a lot easier for her to tell Perez Hilton and the 95% of the audiance who, according to Mr. Ihrig, suppost gay marriage, 'Yeah, i think gays everywhere should be allowed to marry'. She might not be towing the line for liberal culture, but I give her credit for not compromising whatever it is she believes. If our litmus test for 'worthiness' is to see who supports gay marriage then we're not really any different than those wack jobs who think we should only teach the earth is only 5K years old.

keep it up. trump loves the publicity.

Still, it's not as if Miss USA 'represents' America. She's not a diplomat; she's not an ambassador. She's a model with a pretty face who parades around in pretty clothes. Ask your *real* representative to the world her political opinions about the issues you care about. By the way, she wears pants-suits, not bathing suits.

It was a really dumb thing for Miss California to say. It was as if she were asked: "Do you believe in polygamy and in making love with your father, and in women's subservience to men? " to which she would answer: " In my family, we don't compromise with what's in the Bible". She reminds me off all the people that put Bush into the presidency because they wanted to have a beer with him and because he seemed like a moral, god-fearing man who spoke directly to Jesus. Regardless of her opinions about gays, she deserved to lose---she wasn't ready to be someone that girls can look up to. At the very least, she didn't read her own bible with anything more than a third grader's comprehension level.
07:05 PM on 04/22/2009
I guess it's pretty clear you've never read the bible, and if you have, with no comprehension level. If you took one minute to read a bible, which you presuppose Miss California reads, you would know that God did not favorably look upon things like Incest (Lot and his daughters), Polygamy (Solomon), or the objectifying and degredation of women (Wife/Husband-Church/Christ relationship). Actually, she is someone girls can look up to since she actually is taking a stand against something she believes is true. It's no different than Greenpeace taking a stand against environmental rapists.

where does biblical authority come down on "beauty pageants". arent the contestants in committing , and or facilitating a number of deadly sins and commandments? first of all pride, uno numero right there. and they certainly have isnpired me to commit the sin of lust, (in my case adultery also, im Catholic so we dont actually have to do it for it to count), bearing false witness, coveting, am i missing any?

what a rip job.... nice way to promote gay marriage, at the pageant?

and then chastise her for her opinion?
call her homophobic..... an opinion is not homophobic.
don't we have enough bs'ers in this country, that one needs to fake her feelings?
who cares how many gays were there, she is entitled to her opinion.

this is a prime example of the loss of free speech.

Hail to the Beauty Queen!!!

She is indeed just that! Since when do the gay guy set what is "politically correct " who is he?

Miss California said she doesn’t want to marry a woman she wants to only marry a man and she said that is how she was raised why is she being pulled apart for that??? Why are we being denied a voice on that.

Miss America is what represents the ultimate woman in American she is supposed to represent what a mans dream is that’s what that institution is all about

How dare the gay guy deny her what is fair and just, just because she said she believes marriage is between a woman and a man

isn’t she allowed to feel this way??????????????????????????????

Who and what has the right to destroy her for it and why why would they want to. See that’s the real question

Had she stood up and said I am okay with gay marriage and those who oppose her made a fuss and the heterosexual judge denied her the proper vote what would the gays be saying?????????????????????????

How dare he!!!

She is indeed the winner
And he is the whiner

No one is condemning her for speaking her mind except Perez. She lost because she scored low on this part of the contest because she didn't answer the question and used bad English and grammar. You need to watch the show again and LISTEN to the question. She was low in points prior to this question, she wasn't going to win anyway. In any case since when is Fake Boobs, Tan, Teeth, dressed like a PORN star while using bad English admirable conservative traits?

Everyone is entitled to free speech even hate speech or bigoted speech in this country, that's just how it is. NO one is FORCING ANYONE to NOT say how they feel or believe or to marry the same sex or believe in same sex unions.

You've got to be a complete Dumbarse to conclude that from watching a petty B fight between two wannabee Queens! Get a life, the Miss America Contest unlike the Miss USA contest requires NO Talent, it's a Bimbo contest.

I'm sorry the contestant you were rooting for did not ultimately win.

However I don't think anyone is seriously getting on her case claiming she did not answer honestly. But there is a big difference between an argument and an opinion. She's confusing the two. It's as if she's been trained to call her ideas "opinions" to avoid having to support her argument.

If she was arguing that gays/lesbians should not have the right to marry or join civil unions, there would be a barrage of questions that would follow that she would not be able to answer other than resorting to her religious institution's moral authority.

But since she masked her thought as an opinion, she has claimed immunity from supporting her ideas.

She has been trained in "Beauty Contest Non-speak". It's a language that strings together groups of stilted, meaningless phrases in the hope of not sounding completely vapid by the time you stop talking. It seldom works.
