THE poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself-by SELLING his nine-year-old daughter.

In a bid to escape India's real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World's undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: "I have to consider what's best for me, my family and Rubina's future."

The month of April is International Day Against Child Slavery throughout the world. I hope the unfortunate and serious allegation that Rubina Ali’s father attempt to sell the child help to raise awareness to child abuse and maltreatment everywhere especially in India, Haiti (restavek) and the child Camel Jockeys in Middle Eastern countries.

If Rubina Ali were to be sold, she would be one of the many Indian children that are sold by their families because the parents are extreme poor. Unfortunately, these children don’t end up in posh homes such as Madonna’s or in a home with the average loving parents. Too often, children end up as camel jockeys and are forced into other forms of Child labour and are not always lucky to be rescued by the Ansar Burney program.

Let’s raise awareness and help prevent Child-Abuse and fight child Child-Slavery.

I wonder if the hate and prejudice would be against all of Europe if someone in France did this? Because you DO know that India has more ethnic and cultural diversity than all of Europe right? I'm SURE huffpo users are smart enough to know that right? Oh and what's the population of Europe compared to India? Do you know there are more languages in India than in Europe? Given the crushing poverty this family lives in, who can blame the father from attempting to lift not only his daughter from poverty, but her siblings (if she has any) as well. Who's to say if I and my children were living in such conditions that I wouldn't do the same.

Proverty is not an excuse to sell your children, there is such thing as contraception; if all poor parents share your view than children will be the most common commodity on the world market, according to the UN, 1/4 of the chikdren in the world do not get a decent meal a day.

Are incidents like these common in India? No... but when there are 1 billion people in a country, the number of such incidents will be proportionately higher.
Then why do we keep getting reports like these? Because the father of an Oscar child NOT willing to sell his daughter for 200,000 is NOT news.
Why did the father do it? What will you do in a "will you sleep with me for a million bucks" scenario? Your answer + or - money + or - education should approximately give you the answer.
Why do the rich and middle class in India go into denial mode when such stories come up before a foreign audience? Because we have no clue what is actually happening in our country.

How is this any different than Billy Ray Cyrus, Joe Jackson, Dina and Michael Lohan, Joe Simpson or any of the thousands of parasitic stage parents who "sell" their childrens' childhood to the highest bidder so they can become rich or richer?

There is a very unfortunate insinuation in that header that he is selling his daughter sexually. Perhaps the bright light who did this piece and its headline should turn attention to some of the others who have been doing this, big time, since long before Mama Lee.

The difference here is the father is literally selling his child, or trying to, to people he does not know. They could have been anyone with any nefarious intent. He doesn't care. He just wants money. (I agree about the sexual insinuation but think about it. Most children who are sold go either into household slavery or sexual slavery. Those are just the facts. The family from the Middle East who wanted to adopt her may have had better intentions.)

In America, parents cannot sell their children, only their services. Stage parents, who have definitely earned their reputations, cannot take their children's money. By law, it has to be set aside in a trust fund. In court, parents have actually had to pay money back they wrongfully took. Most of the time, children in America become performers because they like it. I know. I was an agent for ten years. True, some parents do put their children out there when they don't want to be there. But producers and directors spot the ones who don't want to be there a mile away. They don't get hired and are soon out of the business and back on the playground. The Miley Cyruses and Jessica Simpsons of the world love it or they wouldn't last. I'm not saying some stage parents don't take it too far. But they are nothing like the father of Rubina Ali.
