Venezuela To Restore Ambassador To US

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Hugo Chavez said Saturday that he is restoring Venezuela's ambassador in Washington, voicing hopes for a "new era" in relations after exchanging greetings with U.S. President Barack Obama at a regional summit.

Venezuela's socialist president told reporters at the Summit of the Americas that he will propose Roy Chaderton, his current ambassador to the Organization of American States, as the country's new representative in a move toward improving strained ties with Washington.

The announcement crowns a week in which Obama rejected two centuries of U.S. "heavy-handedness" toward Latin America and raised hopes for a rapprochement with Cuba, with which it severed ties 48 years ago. Venezuela under Chavez has become a close ally of Cuba.

Chavez expelled the U.S. ambassador to Venezuela, Patrick Duddy, in September in solidarity with leftist Bolivian President Evo Morales, who ordered out the top U.S. diplomat in his country for allegedly helping the opposition incite violence.

Washington reciprocated by kicking out both nations' ambassadors.

Chavez's decision on U.S. relations came after a day of interaction with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other diplomats at a hemispheric summit in the twin-island Caribbean republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

The State Department said Chavez had approached Clinton during summit sessions Saturday, and the two discussed returning ambassadors to their posts in Caracas and Washington.

"This is a positive development that will help advance U.S. interests, and the State Department will now work to further this shared goal," State Department spokesman Robert Wood said.

Chavez had stormy relations with the previous U.S. administration and once likened President George W. Bush to the devil. He has warmed to the new American president at this weekend's summit, though Obama had been critical of him for his alleged harboring of and offering finance to Colombian rebels.

On Saturday, Chavez gave Obama a book about foreign exploitation of Latin America and repeated in English during a luncheon speech what he told the U.S. president at their first meeting the night before: "I want to be your friend." Obama exchanged handshakes and pats on the back with the Venezuelan leader.

Chavez said he'd instructed his foreign minister, Nicolas Maduro, to begin the process of making Chaderton his new U.S. ambassador.

"He's my candidate," said Chavez. "We have to wait for the United States to give the appropriate acceptance."

At the 34-nation summit's inauguration on Friday, Obama won repeated applause with his promise to be an equal partner in the region and expressed his desire for a "new beginning" with Cuba, which has been suspended from the OAS for 47 years.

The Americas director of the Carter Center, Jennifer McCoy, called Chavez's announcement "surprising, but a very positive outcome of the summit."

She said Chavez may have realized he had little choice but to try to improve ties with the United States given Obama's overwhelming popularity in Latin America and elsewhere.

"He can still criticize U.S. policy," McCoy said, "but it is much more difficult to criticize Obama the man."

Of course Joe the Scar and Pat the But were bashing President Obama on MJ this morning because in their words he looked weak. I have a fundamental problem with that. Why is it that if a leader or person in general doesn't act macho it is seen as a weakness? I believe in the catching more bees with honey idea. I used to work for IRS and to coordinate witnesses for the govt. The whites in the office thought that I should use my blackness to intimidate taxpayers. Ultimately, they were surprised when hostile witnesses expressed appreciation for the way I treated them, which in turn made them more agreeable to testifying for the gov't. This is not a black/white thing, but it is an old outdated white male, I rule the world thought process that makes folks like Joe, Pat, Hannity, Rush, Boehner, Greta, Beck and others nervous and like Meghan McCain said, "scared scheitless".

Venezuela is an important trading partner with the US. This is good news that will be spun as bad news.

Maybe Bush would have thought that Chavez's sending of an ambassador to US is a sign of our weakness.

Chavez, And I called Bush the devil TEE HEE Hey contrary to what you believe I hope Obama does open more diplomatic avenues. But before you declare him the greatest President in the last 30 years lets see what happens. You touted his great European trip but I do not see any accomplishments yet. Like I said I'll give him time as long as you wait to see what the results are.

President Obama is changing the world one day at a time. He has done more for this country in the past 2.5 months than any President has done in the past 30 years. However, beware of the distortments some will make about his continued efforts to re-brand America.

I have written a few editorials that I think so of you may enjoy reading at www.wemustchange.org

Organization of American States Secretary-General José Miguel Insulza expressed it very graphically when he said: “Those who thought that this was going to be a shouting match have come away disappointed. A new, very positive spirit has been noted.”

In one short weekend ...........

The hostility of the ALBA countries toward the United States also seemed to lose steam, as became clear on Sunday with the words of President Zelaya after he and his Central American counterparts met with Obama.

“The entire summit has had an atmosphere of very fraternal dialogue and that pleases us Latin Americans. We are no longer having the strong clashes there were before. Obama’s behavior is totally different: more openness, more dialogue and more respect. There are good prospects (because) the United States changed with Obama,” he said.

This will not help the US economy...No war with Venezuela...Defense contractors will not be able to create new jobs for Americans...and they may even have to lay off those returning from Iraq!!! Weapons manufacturers will also be seriously affected....

One more reason why Obama's economic agenda is faulty.

Did Obama wash his hands after he shook hands with Chavez? No!

One more reason why Obama is a socio-communistic fascist.

So. What is the evidence? Guilt by association?
Is he not associated more with the American system? How many commies are there?

Sanders is something a kin to a European Social democrat, but no commie.

Where do you folks see all these communists?

The neocons fear that Obama will succeed where they failed miserably. So the only option for them is to create fear and hate around the country to stop Obama any which way.

Actually it worked. We sent our bankers to Brazil, Singapore, Kansas, everywhere. And now everyone lives in fear of what tomorrow will bring.
