Gibbs

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs stated Monday that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's inflammatory anti-Israel rhetoric at a UN conference on world racism affirmed the administration's decision not to attend that conference.

"This is obviously a painful rhetoric," Gibbs said of the Iranian president's remarks. "It is, I think, one of the reasons why you saw the administration and the president determine that partaking in this conference was not a wise thing to do. Obviously the president disagrees vehemently with what was said... we continue to evaluate our policy and understand that from a larger foreign policy framework, doing things the same old way is not likely to bring about the change we need in our foreign policy."

Gibbs stressed that the president was still committed to combating global racism. Last week, aides discussed putting out a separate statement underlying this commitment. Certainly, minority groups -- including the NAACP -- are looking for some sort of commitment after petitioning (unsuccessfully) for the United States to attend the conference, known as Durban II. Gibbs also noted that the U.S. is seeking a seat on the UN Council on Human Rights.

Ahmadinejad's rhetoric at Durban II -- which included calling Israel the leading cause of racism -- was not unexpected by administration officials. On a conference call with American Jewish leaders last week, members of Obama's foreign policy team acknowledged their concern of being stuck in the conference room as the Iranian president and others ripped not just Israel but the United States. Several western officials, indeed, walked out during Monday's address. And Gibbs argued that these protests proved that that president had "made the right decision to not go forward with attendance."

Open Message to Mr. Gibbs on behalf of "We The People" who elected him:

I'd like to know exactly what our President took issue with that Ahmadinejad said that was so bad, Mr Gibbs? Which exact parts of what he said isn't true?

No snow job please. We expect more from you. We have been lied to long enough. I'm an ex-activist & supporter of President Obama & have worked very hard to help get him elected. I came out of retirement to do that. I have relentlessly defended him & have been behind him 100% in believing what others say is madness as genius. Now, I'm getting worried. We are paying attention, Mr. Gibbs. And we have learned a lot of truth concerning Ahmadinejad & Israel. And as I said, we've been lied to enough.

This boycott is consistent with Obama's position on conflict resolution. If he'[d come along during the turbulent 60's, his approach would more along the lines of MLK vs pre-Mecca Malcolm X. Attacking your adversary with hardcore--even when truthful--rhetoric is not going to lead to any positive resolution. And I fully concur.

Certainly Ahmadinejad was not the best choice to reprimand Israel on human rights considering his own human rights record. Nevertheless that does not negate the fact Israel's actions deserve to be criticized. However by using clichés such as "anti-Semitism" and the holocaust Israel effectively silenced the critics.

No one is arguing Israel's right to defend herself. But when offense is disguised as defense to justify mounting aggressive military action to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible on the Palestinians undermines progress toward long-term stability.

Palestine has been ravaged by Israel's occupation. The people, condemned and ostracized, live in dire poverty. Their only escape is thru peace. And that requires an honest assessment of the situation.

Therefore it is imperative we learn to discern the difference between anti-Semitic rhetoric and criticism based on fact. The latter is legitimate the former is not. Silence is no longer an option.

No, A.I.P.A.C's admonition did! Tail wagging the dog, as usual and as predicted! BTW, someone check with Jane Harman, make sure she didn't get tapped by the NSA while cajoling the administration on behalf of this esteemed organization!

The orchestrated walkout demonstrates the power of the Israeli Lobby.
The boycott of the conference is because the US is unable to defend it's support of Israel.
The meeting on Racism was to listen to all sides of the issue. But the US won't do that.
The US has supported 60 years of killing, imprisoning, and disenfranchising Palestinians.
The US and Israel walked out on a similar conference in 2001, then 9-11 happened.
As Alexa07 wrote, "The new Obama team needs to take a closer look at what conditions & treatment it is underwriting in the Middle East by supporting wholeheartedly the policies of Israel."

If President Obama had attended, it would have brought more of a focus on the event just to see what he would do, and give them more of a platform from which to spew their hatred. By not attending, he and others leaders who felt likewise took some of the focus off the meeting. I think it was a wise decision.

have you people forgotten the holocoust ? israel has every right to be apprehensive concerning any racial injustice, and we as a nation should be prepared to defend them and any people attacked based soley on their ethnicity - aha-mad- inejahds is a tyrant. you can't have a civilizied talk about race with a racist - they only have one mind set - to wipe those people off the face of the planet, period.

Native Indians as well as other races have suffered & you don't hear them bringing up the past as an excuse for their own ongoing crimes & deceptions.

I think our administration missed a golden opportunity, by not attending. If the President, himself, had attended, one of his most awesomest speeches, ever ,could have followed up this little twit, and made a huge impact on world race relations. I know he’s busy , and i’m not faulting or laying blame, or even disagreeing with the position that the administration took by not going. I just think an opportunity was missed, that could have made a huge difference in world relations and our ‘moral authority reparations’, and at the same time reduced this little iranian goatfugger to nothing more than a puddle of s pit.

It's not so much that Ahmedinejad's usual vitriol. What Obama should pay attention to is the response from the Arab nations.
