Leona Helmsley Greenwich Estate

The Associated Press reports that the palace of the Queen of Mean is on sale -- at 40 percent off.

The late Leona Helmsley's mansion in Greenwich, Conn., is now on sale at the discount price of $75 million, down from the already cut-rate $95 million it was offered for last Fall. The story was first reported in the Stamford Advocate.

The estate, called Dunnellen Hall, was originally put on the market for $125 million in early 2008.

The house -- perched on a hill with stunning views of Long Island sound -- boasts a 70-foot reflecting pool with a fountain, an indoor pool and 47-foot reception hall, the paper said.

Proceeds from the sale are to go to a charitable trust established after her death in 2007.

Pardon the pun, but it sounds like they just screwed the pooches.

Anything that you have for sale is only worth someone else is willing to pay for it. The $100 mil house market ain't what it used to be.

Being rich doesn't mean you have taste. The indoor pool and the grounds are wonderful. everything else looks like a communist version of a first class hotel.

The dungeon board room with red chairs is how I imagined Cheney's hideout. It is flat out creepy...

It is a very beautiful place. I find this kind of excess appalling but it is still a very beautiful place.

It was wrong to change the terms of her will. It was her business, her money and no one else's to do what she wanted with. I am shocked that this is even allowed. if she wants to give it all to the dog, then it was hers to do it. On the most fundamental possible basis this was very wrong.

I respect your opinion, but I totally disagree. You DON"T leave $12M to a dog (and I'm a dog lover) and nothing to two of your four grandchildren. The two grandchildren were supposedly disinherited because neither of them chose to name any of their children "Harry", after Leona's late husband. IMO, she was clearly not of sound mind when this will was executed. I'm glad the courts can and do step in, under circumstances like this. The court redistributed the $12M: $2M for the dog, $4M to charity and $3M to each of the two disinherited grandchildren.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to live in such a mausoleum. The grounds are beautiful, but the inside is awful. No pictures on the staircase walls to break up the starkness and the rooms are unwelcoming.

Well, maybe the whole thing fitted right into Helmsley's persona. My preference is for something cozy where the grandkids can feel comfortable.

When I was a little girl I had an aunt who was fanatical about her house and I had to take my shoes off at the door - and didn't dare put anything on the dining room table. I hated to visit. I also have a girlfriend (who I see maybe every few years) who also makes me uncomfortable when I visit because everything is white (eggshell) and guest slippers meet me at the front door.

My own home is a bit different. It's a refurbished 160 year old farmhouse with cat toys on the floor and windows which don't get washed maybe as often as they should. However, my summer garden is a picture!!

It appears quite "cold." Er, the mansion, I mean...well both, really.

I bet that darn thing is haunted! That's why no one wants to buy it. You know some rich person went in there to look at it and she jumped from behind something and scared them half to death!

It looks like "Professor Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters" from the X-Men comics and movies. Just sayin'.
