SAN FRANCISCO — Miss California Carrie Prejean, who became the bombshell of the Miss USA pageant by saying gay couples should not be allowed to marry, said Sunday that her state sponsors urged her to apologize afterward but she rejected the advice.

Prejean, 21, said officials from the Miss California USA pageant were worried that her comments would cost their contest financial backing and tried to prepare her for a string of post-pageant media interviews by discouraging her from discussing her religious beliefs.

"`You need to apologize to the gay community. You need to not talk about your faith. This has everything to do with you representing California and saving the brand,'" Prejean recalled being told. "I was representing California. I was representing the majority of people in California."

She offered her version of the tense hours following the April 19 Miss USA pageant while appearing at the San Diego megachurch that has helped shape her views. The Rock Church, founded by former San Diego Chargers defensive back Miles McPherson, was active in the campaign to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriages in California last year.

Prejean, who was named first runner-up to Miss North Carolina and will remain Miss California until November, has spent the last week defending her comments, made during the pageant's final round. They came in response to celebrity blogger Perez Hilton's question about legalizing same-sex marriage.

"I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage," she said. "And you know what? I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

Hilton, who is gay, stoked the 30-second exchange the next day when he cursed the beauty queen on his blog and suggested her response may have cost Prejean the Miss USA crown.

Officials from K2 Productions, which produces the Miss California USA pageant, did not immediately return a phone call Sunday from The Associated Press seeking to verify Prejean's account.

The San Diego Christian College junior, model and member of the San Diego Padres "Pad Squad" received a heroine's welcome from fellow members of the Rock, where she was the guest of honor at morning services. Seated onstage across from McPherson, she recalled resisting multiple opportunities _ from her appearance on NBC's "Today" show to a performance with Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump _ to edit, explain or expound upon her remarks.

"I knew I had to stay true to my beliefs and not let them intimidate me into taking back what I said because I don't take back what I said," she said.

Rashad Robinson, media programs director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said Prejean's honesty would have been admirable if, in frankly expressing her opinion, she hadn't misspoke.

"Contrary to Miss California's claim, people can't choose, gay and lesbian couples don't have a choice except in a handful of states," Robinson said. "In her extensive public platform since then, she hasn't clarified that, she hasn't walked back from what are clearly misstatements."

Because the contestant's scores are supposed to be kept secret, it may never be known whether Prejean would have won had she not drawn Hilton's question. Trump has said one part of the pageant would not have decided the outcome. Other pageant veterans, however, say that based on her standing as first runner-up, low scores from one judge would have been enough to cost Prejean the title.

Besides Hilton, at least two more of the pageant's dozen judges have said Prejean should have given a more politic, if not politically correct, answer to avoid offending anyone and that it was her lack of tact, not her opposition to same-sex marriage, that ruffled feathers.

"I do not fault her for her beliefs. I fault her for her complete lack of social grace, and that's a quality I want my Miss USA to possess," judge Alicia Jacobs, a former Miss Nevada, wrote on her blog.

Others, though, have applauded Prejean for her forthrightness. The other four finalists were asked whether they would speak out against domestic violence, favor using taxpayer money to bail out corporations, give immigrants access to health care and help fund elections in Afghanistan.

"A question like that is not relevant in a platform such as the Miss USA pageant. It's far too political and it's divisive as well," said Kenya Moore, the 1993 Miss USA who was one of the judges that named Prejean Miss California in November. "Half of the audience is going to agree and half is not, no matter what she said. It's a no-win situation."

As for Prejean, there is still the possibility she could go on to become Miss USA if winner Kristen Dalton wins the Miss Universe pageant this summer. Meanwhile, she plans to continue making the public appearances that comes with her Miss California USA duties.

On Thursday, she received a standing ovation while presenting an award at the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards in Nashville, but said, "up in Hollywood, I'm not sure what their reaction would be to my showing up at a movie premiere."

She said she would be willing to meet with representatives from California's largest gay rights group "as long as it's not political."

If anything, Prejean has solidified her stance in the last week. McPherson, who preaches against homosexuality, has been acting as her adviser and encouraging her to use her newfound fame to persuade other evangelical Christians to share their views, even if they are unpopular.

"I learned that God has a bigger crown than any man can give you," she said.

I wonder how supportive the pageant would be if a contestant adamantly expressed her atheistic views? Or does free speech only apply if you agree with them?

Back in 1967 there was a married couple named Loving. Their marriage was *illegal* in sixteen (16) states, and the majority of Americans polled *opposed* their marriage many on the grounds of a heartfelt belief that the *Bible* condemned such unions.

Fed up with being harassed by police for no other crime than being a marriage comprised of a white man and a black woman, Richard Loving took his case to the Supreme Court.

That was 1967, and the Supreme Court ruled that those laws prohibiting inter-racial marriage were unconstitutional. The justices did so in direct defiance of popular opinion, and solely on the basis of the cold, hard facts of the case, and the content of our Constitution, and simple human decency.

Prior to Loving vs. Virginia, the woman I am now married to, the wonderful, elegant, amazing, talented *soulmate* that God has blessed me with, well, if it were 1967 our marriage would be *illegal* in sixteen states and the *majority* of Americans would think our marriage *wrong,* and many would no doubt assert that "the Bible says so!"

Being gay is an *orientation,* not a "lifestyle choice," and any first semester Psychology or Human Biology student knows this to be a scientific fact.

To continue to discriminate against the fundamental human right of consenting adults to marry while denying the actual facts of the matter is the height of intellectual dishonesty in the service of a morally bankrupt authoritarian political agenda.

absolutely incredible post. When I first read "couple named Loving" I thought it was going to be a long, drawn out pun.

THanks for sharing.

You made my day. Week, actually.

Their story is the basis of the title song on Nanci Griffith's upcoming album, "The Loving Kind." Great song, important story.

As for Ms. Prejean, even though I totally disagree with her, I'd rather hear what she really thinks than some mealy-mouthed explanation. Better to let evil be known as it is. If the pageant wants women like her to be their face, then fine. It's instructive to know that they support bigotry and intolerance--especially if it comes in a package of colored hair and fake boobs.

What does "heroine's welcome" mean? Thousands of people greeting her plane (or train) at her arrival in the city?

Those who say God made them gay reminds me of Genesis 3: 12. When Adam and Eve got caught disobeying the commandments of God.

Adam tried blaming God for his sin, " and the mad said, the women whom thou gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

In the end the Almighty God will be our judge, He is the only one without sin.

We are all without sin, because sin is an invention of men, for the purpose of controlling others. In other words, sin does not exist, just like "God" doesn't exist.

There are two types of Christians.. True Christians and Fake Christians. Lets really call this what it is.. HATE.. We are all Gods children and these fake Christians that think they are the warriars of God are in for a big shock. Carrie is only using this cause she is upset she lost. She wants her 15 min of fame. See which one you fall under. start looking at your life

True Christians:
Belives in God
Treats others well
Does not wish or do ill to others
Helps out people in need
Teaches love NOT HATE to their children and others
Forgives
Lives by Gods law
Has faith in God, themselves and others
Prays to God and thanks him for everything in life
FAKE CHRISTIANS
Belives in God when it is convienent for them
Sins all week long and than on Sunday at church thinks God will forgive them
Treats others well only if it beniits them
Walks past homeless people or others in need
Does not help out, unless it will effect them
Teaches hate to children and others that don't follow them
Stands up for what they think is wrong untill it happens to them
MEANING.. Sarah Palin.. against teen sex until her kid get pregnant.

Blames things on Gods Will.. instead of taking responablity for their own actions

Thinks they are doing Gods will and will be rewarded. hmmmm like a terriorist thinks he will get 40 virgins for killing people.

Perez Hilton represents all that is vile and vulgar in our society. By letting him judge this contest Donald Trump and the Miss USA organization have turned this pageant into a Las Vegas sideshow with the intelligence of a soap opera and credibility of a pro-wrestling match. Guess trump want's some of that pro-wresting money.

Carrie Prejean's Grandmother who comes from the last generation that had any moral backbone summed it up this way:

"I don't know why that gay guy Perez was even judging a contest with a bunch of girls. That doesn't make any sense. He should be judging a Chippendale's contest."

Granny has a lot more integrity than the flakes that are running Donald's organization these days.

If it were a contest based solely on physical beauty (whatever that is), her opinions wouldn't matter. But as long as the contestants are presented as PERSONALITIES, then the quality of that personality is also going to be judged. Firstly, she expressed herself in a jumbled way, and secondly, she was undiplomatic. Those were the two big strikes against her. Personally, I think her message is repugnant (not to mention hypocritical, as she's not holding herself to ancient Biblical laws) (nice breasts), and I wouldn't want to see such an ignorant person representing my home state in ANY way. You just can't get away from the fact that, regardless of who can be lured to the polls, educated people and younger generations are less and less tolerant of bigots. Hopefully, Miss California will find a single man at church very soon and marry, so He can rule all her actions (Genesis 3:16), sell her if he wants to (Matthew 18:25 ) and/or impregnate her post haste, so she may begin raising God's army and be saved in childbirth (1st Timothy 2:15)...as that is what the Bible teachers, and she's apparently very into "Christianity". I hope she's extremely happy.

Hmmm, I'm just wondering how her God feels about vanity and the need for external affirmation of their own beauty...

Oh, and say what you will about Perez - I can take him or leave him - but the question was NOT provided by him rather from a list submitted online by viewers...you can't really shoot the messenger although his handling of the situation afterwards did leave much to be desired.

It's a shame to see so many bigots coming in here, hiding behind their Bibles and their "small-town values" to tell people that they don't have the right to engage in a personal, spiritual union because one of them lacks the requisite genitals. What a cruel farce.

Hey, guess what, Bible-thumpers? God doesn't exist, and gay people do. So stop protecting your imaginary friends and learn to live in the real world with real, loving people!

Do you have absolute evidence that God doesn't exist?
And aren't you just as much of a bigot for calling them Bible Thumpers?

You see, that is the problem w your cause...You guys should be approaching it the debate philosophically, however, so often, you chose to use slander and insult people of faith.

I once had a homosexual friend who was very intelligent and very convincing because he used hi intellect and did not resort to name calling and slander.

Her actions are no longer covered by the MSM. Even this article is way down in the entertainment section. She is delegated towards speaking to congregations, reaffirming their bigotry.

Meanwhile, Miss USA's reign is just beginning and she will be very busy traveling the country promoting worthwhile causes.

And that, would be God's final say in the matter.
