ISLAMABAD — Pakistan's president said Monday his intelligence agencies believe Osama bin Laden may be dead, but he added there is no proof. Other Pakistani officials and a U.S. counterterrorism official said they thought the al-Qaida chief is alive. U.S. officials said bin Laden is most likely hiding in the mountains along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, in particular the lawless tribal regions.

"We continue to believe that bin Laden is alive," said the U.S. official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Reports of bin Laden's death or of near-captures have punctuated his years on the run since the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S., only to be seemingly debunked by periodic audio and video recordings.

The latest recordings emerged in March, in which bin Laden referred to the December-January Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, calling it a "holocaust," and spoke of the January election of Somalia's U.N.-backed president, calling for him to be overthrown.

In an interview Monday with international media outlets, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said American officials had told him they do not know where bin Laden is.

"They are much more informed," Zardari said. "They've been actually after him for a longer time. They've got more equipment. They've got more intelligence. ... so they tell us they have no trace at the moment."

Zardari added that his country's intelligence agencies "obviously feel that he does not exist anymore," but he didn't explain how or when they reached that conclusion, and quickly qualified his comment by saying bin Laden "may be dead."

"That's not confirmed. We can't confirm that," he said. "It's still in between fiction and fact."

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, appearing later Monday with his visiting British counterpart at a news conference, seemed surprised when a reporter asked about Zardari's remarks.

"I don't know what are the comments of the president, but at the same time, I must clarify this, that nobody knows about Osama bin Laden," Gilani said. "We don't know about it, whether he is alive or dead."

Mahmood Shah, a former security chief in the tribal regions, said he believes bin Laden is alive. "Where, I don't know. If he had died, we would have heard a lot of noise among the militants. From that I'd guess that he is alive," he said.

Ben Venzke, director of IntelCenter, the U.S. contractor that tracks extremist propaganda, said it was unlikely al-Qaida would keep bin Laden's death a secret.

"Bin Laden's death will likely be celebrated by the group and its affiliates as him having achieved martyrdom as opposed to the group seeing it as a crushing and demoralizing blow," Venzke said.

Musharraf said it, Benazir said it and now Zardari says it... Didn't Benzir tell David Frost that some Talibans killed OBL? Whats interesting is that the moment someone mentions this, they see a demise of some sort. Is Zardari going to be eliminated soon as a President?

Why don't we just ask John McCain where Bin Laden is? He said that he'd tell us if he were elected but surely he'll just tell us anyway.

OBL will not die until he is no longer needed by Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. Then he will die an ignominious death at the hands of a real American.

Perhaps Zardari should stay more focused on the Pakistani Taliban.

OBL is living in Saudi Arabia with his family, and likely receives regular visist from the Bush family whenever they are in the area.

With any luck he will contract swine flu. That would be kind of a poetic end for him, wouldn't it?

How many sons did Osama Bin Laden have? How many have the same voice as he did? How often does one mistake someone on the phone for their parent? As everyone knew he had a liver condition to boot, it is preposterous to think he is still alive. Of course others want to keep people thinking he is still alive in order to keep the movement going [and maybe some to keep the war going].
Sounds like the latest make-believe plan to destroy the Taliban by guarding poppy fields [My, heavens! What are we going to do about these blasted embarrassing poppy fields?] Hey, lets let the Afghan people decide about the Taliban. If Al Quida builds a terrorist base of some kind, we can still take them out the same way we used to do before the wars. Lets come on home and mind our own business.

I find Zardari's comments hilarious since it was his wife who knew Bin Laden died in ?May of 2007? The last person alive is Sarkosky of France... think he'll live to tell the truth?

Claiming he is still alive by audio is a bunch of whooy; all fabricated by the infamous _B_ or _I_.

I wonder how Obama will make out now that he's at war with Pakistan...

He probably IS dead, and has been for years.

Saddam Hussein had several "doubles" who appeared in his stead.

I'd be willing to bet that bin Laden prepared for his own death by vetting a number of Saudis of the proper height, voice pattern and tone, general facial appearance, etc., and choosing one (or more) to continue with the videotapes and the dire pronouncements long after he was gone.

Some times I have to keep posting the same "song and dance" because it has been proven the repetition is a learning tool.

Worked for me, sometimes.

If we find him, GREAT.
Should we risk more human life and billions on the task, NOPE.

Now, the leader of Pakistan could use a lesson from this man:
