Really?

"President Reagan and his national-security aides saw the generals who ran Pakistan as loyal allies in the American proxy war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan : driving the Russians out of Afghanistan was considered far more important than nagging Pakistan about its building of bombs.

The Reagan Administration did more than forgo nagging, however; it looked the other way throughout the mid-nineteen-eighties as Pakistan assembled its nuclear arsenal with the aid of many millions of dollars" worth of restricted, high-tech materials bought inside the United States. "

If there is a government, it's only in the capital. The rest of the country is run by Taliban, Al Qida and other radical islamic fundamentalists. If anyone tells you Pakistani government is a democratically elected, you should seriously laugh your arse off.

I have no doubt that U.S. and the world are controlling this quasi country's nuclar (no spelling error) arsenal. It may even be possible that Pakistan may no longer have any nuclar weapon inside their country. They are making public claim about the weapons to keep Indians at bay.

So , we allowed and helped this "never-stable"
country, obtaining nuclear power.
We supported a dictator who allowed some extremists
to take over soon
and we act all surprised?

Good argument, it manages to completely miss the point that during the Bush terms we lifted the Clinton-era sanctions on Pakistan (sanctions they earned for a nuclear test), and regularly met all nice and chummy with Musharraf all while not doing anything whatsoever to curb the tide of Taliban infiltration into Waziristan and Swat that Musharraf himself called "the good Al Qaeda".

Clearly, these things just spring up with no antecedent history to them whatsoever, and so to bring up any of that history (especially the most immediate of that history) is to play some partisan game of hackery as we all know there is no cause or effect to anything done by Republicans and only by Democrats.

China is far more responsible for the development of Pakistan's nuclear technology.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 PM on 04/27/2009

While true, it's not like the US did much to stop the development and still sold some material to Pakistan. China did supply most of the know how and materials, but they weren't the only players in the game.

It would interesting to find out what contingency plans exist to extract nukes from Pstanis in the event of the coup d'état. Obviously it's top secret, but fun to speculate.

Ah yes, there's that.
Part of Cheney's admin. failure to prevent 9/11 was its aversion to anything Clinton admin had to offer on the subject of militant Islam. Example:Richard Clarke

Let's hope Obama doesn't fall into the same trap.

Exactly. Pakistans A.Q.Khan was the profilerator of WMD. Yet he was given a pardon. Pakistan was a stauch ally.

Which makes me think the Bush administration did this on purpose so they can constantly scare people about the threat of WMD and enact their own agenda. If they were hell bent on eradicating terrorism and WMD's, they should have gone to Pakistan and not Iraq !

There goes the USA establishment, Pentagon, CIA and its media again. 1st Iraq on WMDs and now another Muslim country on false pretext of Nukes falling in the hands of extremists in Pakistan. Wow! The web of lies - ain't all of us familiar with them now? Most of the Western, especially US analysts, have no idea how big Pakistan is and how diverse. Besides, nukes are not like laptops that can be stolen by criminals. The way false image is being created about that poor country leads me to believe that there is far more realistic danger lurking in the dark with respect to nukes. I am 100% convinced that US establishment, Pentagon and CIA are, in collusion with Israeli and Indian lobbies, planning a small nuke attack on the US soil or somewhere in Europe, blame it on Pakistan, move against it unilaterally and try to destroy it. I hope I am proven wrong, but this is my prediction - A staged, concocted drama to destroy another Muslim country.

And this is from a Pakistani who lives in the West.
Imnagine for a second what kind of fantasies and rumors are flying around the actual Pakistani souks.
No wonder the response to Taliban is so tepid. All the more reason the nukes needs to be secured in the event of the attempted take over.

"There is a rich vein of “Pakistan on the Brink” theorization that has dominated US foreign policy since the 50s.

Back then, it was the Communist revolution, and now it is the Islamic one.

This particular mind-set has propelled one disastrous policy over another for the last 40 years.

We have supported dictator after dictator and stood by, silently, when civilian regimes floundered under internal economic and political crises."...

Typical Pakistani wallowing in self-pity. The fact that Pakistan is always resorting to outrageous stuntsmanship, such as proliferating nuclear weapons, creating Taliban, affiliating with AlQaeda, etc, shows that Pakistan is indeed always teetering on a precipice.

So the fact that Reagan looked the other way why Pakistan assembled nukes from materials bought inside THIS country is irrelevant?
