LOS ANGELES — Authorities have allowed the son of Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett a brief visit with his ailing mother.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore says a judge allowed 24-year-old Redmond O'Neal to leave jail briefly on Saturday to visit the cancer-striken Fawcett.

O'Neal's family paid roughly $1,300 so that deputies could supervise the visit.

O'Neal has been jailed since April 5, when deputies say he was caught with heroin at a jail facility north of Los Angeles. He faces two important court dates this week, when judges could allow him to re-enter rehab.

O'Neal said in court earlier his month that Fawcett, who is battling anal cancer that has spread to her liver, weighed only 86 pounds. Fawcett's representative disputes the claim.

Let's just hope Dad or some other family enabler didn't slip him anything...

This reeks. More celebrity injustice.

When you figure this kid was not bright enough to NOT take drugs and weapons onto a penal facility after he himself had been in there says much about him, not his parents. Many of us in the world have not had the best parents or the perfect childhood (somehow expected of O'Neal's parents when they are a mess) yet chose when at the age of consent to not be who our parents tried to make us be. We all have made choices to be the result of our childhood or our choices as an adult so who this kid is and what he wants to be are the same. Farrah also now dying has been given the gift of seeing her son and paying the price for the deputies to see him as many "regular people" have done over time. Sad to see the choices the kid has made but when you do something stupid as to take drugs and weapons onto the facility grounds...........

What would you lose if your descriptions of an ill woman let her retain dignity? Could it be that hard?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:02 AM on 04/28/2009

Then perhaps her son shouldn't have said she weighed 86 lbs. No one is asking for any details. Just for them to either tell the truth or be quiet about it. How simple is that?

In other reports, a family friend said not to read too much into this visit and that Farrah is stable. WTH? What jail allows an inmate a visit with a relative unless they're gravely ill, dying or going to a funeral? These family, friends and publicists need to get their words together or not say a thing to the media. How is anyone doing good at 86 lbs? Bernie Mac's publicist made the same mistakes by telling the media he was improving and coming home that week. I'm not saying the fans and public need to know all the details but when someone is gravely ill and they don't want it known, I'd rather say nothing than put untruths out there.

Seems like nothing but pain and sadness in that family. Hope things turn around for them.

Best to Farrah & Ryan. Sad that their son is putting them through all this at this very hard time.

Just son...seems to me I saw dad in court pleading also.

This kid didn't have a chance being parented by Farah and Ryan. Look at Tatum.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:22 PM on 04/27/2009

You got that right and Ryan slammed Tatum every time she appeared on a talk show appearing like she was pleading for the public to know how she was raised. In a way I wish John McEnroe was back in her life. Ryan is either in denial or hasn't even looked at the trail of parental destruction he created and left behind.

I saw Joanne Moore, Tatum's mother, on The Andy Griffith show. She was beautiful and Tatum looked just like her at one point. Looks are deceiving. The women who managed to get with Ryan became part of his chemically fueled life. There was no time to raise the children. Their lifestyles seemed to take precedence over rearing children.

Redmond--take a page from your father, your half-siblings and do something better with your life. Learn from their mistakes. Stop breaking your mothers heart (and you are). Some day you will want to make amends and she won't be there.

Redmond doesn't know any better. When a parent has meth in the house around you, what does that say? He will need therapy for years. I don't get it either. Farrah spoke about how she was raised in an old fashioned, two parent TX family. What happened with her son?

His mother was doing drugs when he was a little boy and needed her. He grew up with terrible role models - I don't wish Farrah Fawcett any bad but it seems people are forgetting the reality

You misspelled "Farrah."

Anyone incarcerated whose mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife or child is dying should be allowed to visit. Anyone. It is a heartless person who thinks otherwise.

Very much agreed. Especially in this case--a non-violent personal use drug offender.

I was so sad to see this headline. I wish Farrah and her family all the comfort possible at this difficult time. Cancer sucks.

I can't believe that some of you are more concerned about the rich getting preferrable treatment than the fact that his mom is obviously dying. Maybe this is the last chance she will get to see him. He is in jail for drug charges, not for killing anyone! He should be in rehab instead of behind bars. Show some mercy people! This is her only child!

I said the same thing and more about 5 hours ago and it never posted. I hope this new government with the help of Senator Webb brings back justice to those convicted and their families who are ripped off by Cheney's prison investments charging 30% off each Money Order sent to the prisoners. He know 90% are poor and he finds ways to continue milking us of every penny we have left. All those who are in jail for less than serious crimes should visit immediate family members if seriously ill or dying. This use to be the case until the far-right took this priviledge away.

Yet on the "People" article quotes someone as not putting too much into this visit. Puleeze! We weren't born yesterday.

Do you have any idea how many times this boy has been to rehab. Evidently he just doesn't get it. At some point you have to man up and take your consequences. Maybe a couple of years in prison will wake him up. Probably not, but rehab sure hasn't helped. It is a shame that he has ended up this way. He has been a long term drug abuser and another rehab isn't going to do it for him. It is too bad that her parents or Ryan's didn't step in with him and get him away from those two. I know she is sick and it is a shame, but this problem with this boy started before she had cancer. He should get to see his mother before he goes to prison. But he should go to prison. The only child that seems to have turned out okay is the child he had with Leigh Taylor-Young.

There was a time when guys in jail could be escorted to see their loved ones prior to dying or when they passed away, but ever since the republicans decided those who went to jail were marked for life they decided to strip them away of everything even after paying their dues. Rich or not this young man and every other person who is on drugs needs to be removed from prison and placed in a medical facility. The millions that are spent in housing these people and then charging them for housing them is the worst kind of management.. well actually there are many failures by government... etc. With that said, yes he is getting special treatment, so why don't people ask the judge for the Redmond Family Right?

So a football player in TX who ran a red light can't walk into a hospital from the parking lot to see his dying mother in law, but this kid gets sprung from the slammer to see his mother.

How about that?!?

The TX incident involved an INDIVIDUAL versus an agency. While you have a point in there, the comparison is a bit weak.

Actually, it is a strong comparison. Justice and favoritism is often bought by the wealthy.

Also- that incident made the headlines BECAUSE it was viewed as wrong. Noone condoned it and it was universally regarded as an outrage. So how is it being presented here as some example of an accepted thing?! It wasn't!!!

Different state, different person. You can't compare what some TX police officer, with an agenda, to Redmond's incarceration and consideration to see his mother.

Sure we can. He's getting treated differently than some others. The TX incident is quiet comparable. After all there are a lot of people in jails whose mothers are ill, and I bet they don't get to go visit her.
