Kathleen Sullivan: Supreme Court Nominee? All You Need To Know

Kathleen Marie Sullivan, a leading scholar in constitutional law and professor at Stanford Law School, is considered a potential replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

Sullivan, who is openly gay, currently practices appellate litigation at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges in California. She was a professor of law at Harvard Law School from 1984 until 1993 and served as the dean of Stanford Law School from 1999 until 2004. She stepped down in 2004 to serve as the first director of the Stanford Constitutional Law Center.

Sullivan has published articles on federalism, religion, speech, equality, and constitutional theory, and she is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. She has argued before numerous appeals courts and the U.S. Supreme Court, and was named by the National Law Journal as one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America.

She has filed amicus curiae briefs in some of the most important Supreme Court cases involving gay rights, including Bowers v. Hardwick and Lawrence v. Texas.
