I Like ItI Don’t Like It

With his chief counsel and chief of staff by his side, Barack Obama made a surprise visit to the White House press briefing room on Friday, officially announcing the retirement plans of Supreme Court Justice David Souter and laying our what kind of appointment he would make.

With no advanced warning, even for Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the President took to the podium to read a brief set of prepared remarks. He had just gotten off the phone with Souter, he announced, and wanted to say a few words about the conversation.

Watch:

"Throughout his two decades on Supreme Court, Justice Souter has shown what it means to be an independent and fair minded judge," said Obama. "He consistently defied labels and rejected absolutes, focusing instead on just one task: reaching a just result in the case that was before him."

As for making a choice to replace him on the bench, Obama laid out broad markers. Promising to "consult with members of both parties across the political spectrum," the president said he would like to see "our new Supreme Court justice in time for him or her to be seated by the first Monday in October when the court's new term begins."

Here are Obama's full remarks, as released by the White House:

Throughout his two decades on the Supreme Court, Justice Souter has shown what it means to be a fair-minded and independent judge. He came to the bench with no particular ideology. He never sought to promote a political agenda. And he consistently defied labels and rejected absolutes, focusing instead on just one task -- reaching a just result in the case that was before him.

He approached judging as he approaches life, with a feverish work ethic and a good sense of humor, with integrity, equanimity and compassion -- the hallmark of not just being a good judge, but of being a good person.

I am incredibly grateful for his dedicated service. I told him as much when we spoke. I spoke on behalf of the American people thanking him for his service. And I wish him safe travels on his journey home to his beloved New Hampshire and on the road ahead.

Now, the process of selecting someone to replace Justice Souter is among my most serious responsibilities as President. So I will seek somebody with a sharp and independent mind and a record of excellence and integrity. I will seek someone who understands that justice isn't about some abstract legal theory or footnote in a case book. It is also about how our laws affect the daily realities of people's lives -- whether they can make a living and care for their families; whether they feel safe in their homes and welcome in their own nation.

I view that quality of empathy, of understanding and identifying with people's hopes and struggles as an essential ingredient for arriving as just decisions and outcomes. I will seek somebody who is dedicated to the rule of law, who honors our constitutional traditions, who respects the integrity of the judicial process and the appropriate limits of the judicial role. I will seek somebody who shares my respect for constitutional values on which this nation was founded, and who brings a thoughtful understanding of how to apply them in our time.

As I make this decision, I intend to consult with members of both parties across the political spectrum. And it is my hope that we can swear in our new Supreme Court Justice in time for him or her to be seated by the first Monday in October when the Court's new term begins.

Here's more discussion of the Court from the briefing, after Obama had made his remarks:

I'm certain Pres. Obama will provide an excellent nomination. At least better than we've been seeing for this past eight. The nominee needs to be an experienced judge, not a converted lawyer.

I'm pretty sure Bush used a telepromter, he just could read and understand what the words meant.

Isn't it amazing that the GOP in it's current state is so lame that their big problem with President O is that he uses a teleprompter! Especially after eight years of a president that couldn't construct a coherant sentence and was a complete embarrassment.

He MUST pick a Latino and someone Liberal. This group is one of the fastest growing in this country and they have very little representation in the higher echelons. Now this group is becoming scapegoats and I find it extremely troubling.

There is still a lot of social conservativism in the latino population, but I would welcome the President to find someone constructive no matter what their race.

A surprise visit, how special. I wonder how many reporters felt that tingle down their legs. Did anybody swoon and fall over?

Greta Van Susteren: "How was that press conference the other night with the President? Was the Press what you thought of them?"

Newt Gingrich: "I wish the Press had gone... I mean, I would love to see a press conference with President Obama, where there were actually reporters there..."

"...by by the way, when the NYT reporter gets up and asks, "What was your most 'euphoric' moment?" What was your most enchanted...{interrupted}

GVS: "...you know what though? ...let, let me tell you something that I thought while watching... lemme give him the benefit of the doubt. I thought he was sort of asking a broad question to get the President talking... because it seemed so scripted up until then. I thought he was trying to get the President talking much like when he was asked... much like when President Bush was asked if he had 'second thoughts' or something..."

Newt: "...I love your capacity to give people the benefit of the 300th doubt. I thought... I think the Washington White House press corp has taken such a pathetic dive with this President. That they, they outta just, they outta be part of his PR firm."

Newt: "I mean it's embarrassing to watch... I mean, how many reporters have said to him, ya know, "So why are you releasing these terrorists in the United States'. I mean how many reporters have said to him, ya know, "Why are you so so confused about whether or not you want to, in fact, go after and prosecute people who have never historically been prosecuted before?"

"Why are so few of them saying, "Gosh, doesn't it worry you to have 9 trillion dollars in debt, being projected onto your administration?"

"I mean, I mean there is no tough serious engagement... it's like watching a collection, of you know... and if you didn't know better you'd think he was practicing with his own public affairs people, for the 'future press conference'... These, these look like 'practice sessions'... they don't look like real press conferences."

What's the point of all this nonsense.

Most of us don't give a rats a$$ about what the clowns at Fox have to say or what their irrelevant opinions are.

::Why are so few of them saying, "Gosh, doesn't it worry you to have 9 trillion dollars in debt, being projected onto your administration?"::

Gotta love it. This (and the other questions they talked about) is one of those "when did you stop beating your wife?"-type questions. Maybe they didn't ask it because this has already been asked and answered a long time ago, and they didn't want to bore people to death like this discussion does.

Which is why I never watch Faux Noise. Sheesh, what an embarrassment, to use their term. You'd think our President doesn't have one good quality or one good policy they could comment on, to hear them rag.

WEAK....

Who started THIS CRISIS?

Have you EVER Seen the 2002 Video of a Younger Bush Pushing "EASY Loans" on Minorities and proclaiming he has Enlisted the Investment Banks to issue "EASY SURE FAIL" Mortgages and Fannie/Freddie to buy the Garbage!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNqQx7sjoS8&feature=related

Fanny/Freddie Bonuses were $700,000 TO $1,100,000

Compare that to $30 to $100 Million Bonuses at Goldman!

F/F were baby steps compared to WALL STREET CR1ME!

So what if he reads from a teleprompter? At least he carefully explains and thinks what to say in front of the people.

Bush couldn't even read a script. The level of envy and spite the pubs have for Barack Obama, the most popular President of the United States in modern history, is so thick you could cut it with a knife.
