Late Night

Joe Biden's terrifying television appearance was the big draw for late night hosts yesterday, with Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson mocking him for saying he was advising his family to stay off public transportation. Ferguson suggested that the next time Biden stick his foot in his mouth, Obama stick his foot somewhere else.

Jimmy Kimmel took on Michele Bachmann's odd and historically incorrect claim that the last time swine flu broke out it was also under Democratic leadership, implying this was political problem as opposed to scientific one. Of course the last time swine flu was an issue, Gerald Ford (a Republican) was in office. As Kimmel noted, "Back in the 1970s you were a stupid child and now you're a stupid adult."

I can't see anything wrong with what Biden said. Just because he gave his opinion of what people shouldn't do--go to enclosed spaces--doesn't mean people have to do that or are going to do that, and what's so terrible if they do.

Most found Biden's comment to be exactly what it was. Not much drama. Media are the ones who should be flogged with the phoney outrage and blow-up. We need to ask ourselves about real perspective when it comes to criticising our VPs. I love Biden,

but Dick is another matter: In contrast, Cheney just told a conservative radio show host he was glad detainees were waterboarded.

"The remarks, delivered during an interview with Scott Hennen, a conservative North Dakota radio host, glossed over the 266 instances in which the United States reportedly used waterboarding on two terrorist suspects -- a figure that would suggest the technique was either not effective or not really used as a last-resort option"

Let's leave Joe's misspeak alone, and concentrate on the real horror show.

Dick the dick was always saying something from an undisclosed location. Biden says things from an undisclosed location in his brain. I love him, but he really should remain quite. VPs are to be seen but not heard. I think my momma told me that.

Biden's the most honest individual in Washington...wish there were more Joes. So I guess I'm saying, I want to hear more from him. As far as I'm concerned, his integrity should be cloned and passed around to other politicians and then to the media.

First time Jimmy Kimmel has gotten a laugh out of me--that was pretty scathing re Bachmann--I'll have to pay more attention.

Bachmann is a hoot! How in God's name did she not only get elected, but re-elected?

Frightening how stupid and uninformed some Americans are.

Joe Biden is always himself. No one should be making a big deal about it at this point. Would they rather have Cheny back? UGH!

Some people probably would, unbelievably. Biden's a good guy, not a hideous meg laloma ni iacal p s y cho path.

I agree with you. I think everyone is making way too much out of what Biden said.

Ferguson was the biggest disappointment. Over the top, almost as if he hadn't seen the interview.

What the heck is wrong with the populace of America? What a bunch of cowards!

The VP says quite rightly that he would advise HIS family to stay away from confined places and it is seen as an invitation to panic!?

It is an invitation to protect YOUR Family- and you really DON'T owe the airplanes ( pushing up fees every day) or the travel agencies ( messing up your bookings), or the subways (crashing) or the tourist industry of ANY COUNTRY the sacrifice of your health.

If Biden was wrong, you guys are plain fools! He is the ONLY person who calls a spade a spade, although he might use the word shovel.

As we say around my house, he's the kind who would call a spade a f--ing shovel. It's just the sort of thing that a double-speak world like Washington needs now and then.

Not to mention that Matt Lauer said, and I'm paraphrasing, "THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A GOT'CHA-type QUESTION BUT what would you advise YOUR OWN FAMILY at this time?"

Not five minutes later when they led into the news portion the backstabbing spin began: "BIDEN ADVISES (his family) NOT TO FLY ON A CLOSED AIRPLANE, OR TO TRAVEL. . . etc.)

Then the hype was off and running.

Obama is already thoughtful in his thinking and speaking. Is it any wonder that he takes 30 thousand years to utter a single sentence, weighing every word? My G*d! when did we get like this?

When did the "American Way" become about anything BUT truth and justice?

(Superman would just cry . . . )

Well considering the fact that you're more likely to die from the common cold than you are this Swine Flu, I think Biden went over the top is his precautions. The media is responsible for spreading this is into a outright panic for no good reason. Does anyone remember the great Avian Flu pandemic that was supposed to a hit a few years back? Taking its time isn't it. Or how about the first time the Swine Flu hit back in the 70's? Don't recall hearing of a second black death occuring back then. People just need to calm the eff down. If you catch it you're going to feel a little ill for maybe a few weeks. We should really be worrying about the laundry list of more important and deadly things in our society such as polluting our air, polluting our water, polluting our bodies with crap food and legal poisons, etc. etc. etc.

A few common sense tips on avoiding getting sick didn't spark this panic. The panic was already there, put in place by the WHO (who is now backpedaling) and the media.

The tourism industry here in Hawaii is kinda shakey, not least because of air travel.
When VP Biden made that statement, I could almost hear the collective gasp from the hotel owners here on Oahu.
I'm afraid that we don't owe anything to air services, but since a bridge to the mainland still seems out of the question, it is about the only realistic way to get to Hawaii and back again. When the tourism industry hurts in Hawaii, everyone here feels it.

Every single industry is experiencing the shakies...but sorry, not because of VP Biden or even in part. Good luck.

We've subsidized airlines before...tax dollars...I don't feel obligated.

And your right of course. But Mr. Biden is receiving far more support and positive feedback than the opposite, which, with talk show hosts and media wanting to find anything to joke about re this administration, I'm feeling good about it. Biden tells the truth, he left decisions up to us, there is no panic. I think the WH and media went overboard with Biden, and I'm tired of them jumping in...let Joe talk. The more he does, the more his manner is accepted. Give me honest any day of the week.

I literally tire of late-night talk hosts and MSM scrambling and turning information around to fill their ways of life. I hope the American public catches on some day.

I took it more as it's easy to hurt industries (like when Oprah disparaged Broccoli) and they were worried the trains would lose business. Either way, I invite you to relax.

You all realize that Joe Biden's prophecy of sorts is currently manifesting into reality, right ???

STAY OFF those confined places ... At least for the next few months ..

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:16 PM on 05/01/2009

Prophecy? Reality? His great prophecy was that a few hundred people or 0.000001% of the population of the US would get a little sick? Nostradamus, you've been usurped.

I like Joe Biden a lot, but his gaffes are no longer charming. Joe, you're not always in your living room. What goes into that microphone in front of your face goes everywhere. Everywhere! Embarrassing is one thing. Doing harm is quite another. Next time, take a deep breath, give yourself five seconds, then speak. Please.

It's probably true, but the American people have never been very good at prioitizing risk. This Swine flu "pandemic?" is a story that is kind of self-perpetuating. When you consider that 32,000 people die of the REGULAR flu every year it kind of puts it in perspective.
I don't know about you, but I'm tired of living in needless fear. We'd do better to remember to always use our seatbelts......or better yet, not to drive!
