I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The new J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" film is getting rave reviews and has many folks excited to see it who have never before watched an episode of the show (such as myself). Unfortunately, the Onion has discovered that true fans of the long-running series and early films are deeply disappointed that the new one is both fun and entertaining.

Just like the last 3 Star Wars, watching the new Star Trek is just like watching some kids playing a video game, all noise, action, violence, destruction, shooting -- BORING! OK, the acting was not too bad, but everything else, especially the plot was -- BORING! Wasn't that Romulian dude in Star Wars with the two prongie thingie ?? The sets were awful - why did the Enterprise's insides look like a cardboard box factiory ??? And what was with the bees that swarmed around when anyone was being transported. Oh, and the music, would it have kill someone dead to have used some of the original theme right from the beginning ???

Most trekkies know about this site, but if you have never been there, do check it out:

I'm sure he will soon have some serious comments about this movie

Reminds me of the hardcore fans of Star trek the original series- who boycotted Star Trek the Next generation. For people lost in the imaginary world of Star trek, they can be surprisingly close minded....

They should follow the examples of Whovians who celebrated the return of Doctor Who, rather than pout in their basements angrily declaring Tom Baker was the 'real' Doctor...

Actually, there are tons of Doctor Who fans who believe that the new series with Russell T Davies is an affront against all that is holy blah blah blah about Doctor Who. I can't really say because I've only seen the new series, having been born in 1990.

Any male American who has not watched at least one episode of Star Trek should have his citizenship revoked.

That's a pretty good Onion clip but that comment at the end about an elderly black woman had me in stitches.

YES! The comment about the elderly black woman following Obama around killed me. That and the subtitle that the movie was accessible to those that don't know what "Pon Farr" is.

Like Shatner himself said to Trek fans back on SNL in '86:

"Get A Life People!"

LOL!

Whoa guys, this thing was a joke, cool it.

Im a big trekkie, and the least you could do as die hard fans is give the film a chance, otherwise you are no worse than other franchise obsessed fans that are close-minded to change. That is exactly the opposite of what the Trek is about. You sound like Rush Limbaugh in wanting the film to fail. Doe the possibility of popularity scare you? If you think of Star Trek as your niche, your series, and you are offended by people taking interest, without bothering to really know the series, then take a breath, examine what you are saying and think hard about it. There are few trek fans that love every episode of every series, or every film; I have never met one. We all love the idea of Trek and the philosophy behind it. Bashing a new take on it does no good to anyone. I hope the film does well, and makes people interested in the story so that they check out the rest of the franchise and hopefully become trekkies themselves.

I think it is telling that the first bunch of people JJA showed the film to were die hard fans who thought they were going to see Wrath of Khan and it was met with extreme excitement. Okuda signed off on it, as did several other big shots in the trek hemisphere. I am looking forward to it, and hopefully you are too.

I notice J.J. Abrams is quoted as saying "This film's not for Trekkies". He better hope trekkies come to this movie. Considering they have kept this franchise alive for 40 years, that a whole lot of people to disregard, isn't it? And continuity has to count for something, but then, anyone who's watched LOST since the beginning knows that continuity has very little to do with his storytelling. Too bad. Because people like me, who enjoy the shows and the movies, but never have gone to a convention, or joined a fan club, are really the heart of the Trek world. And if he is not making this movie for us, then who's going to see it?

I think you missed his point. He didn't say we wouldn't enjoy it necessarily. The point is that we were not the target audience. You have to realize that--as opposed to Kirk, for whom they can just hire younger actors--we are going to die. A little new blood, new perspective on the old formula/franchise could be refreshing. Maybe it will open up the tent a little bit. There's a reason there aren't any more Shakers around--I just look at this movie as an opportunity to go where no one has gone before

Trek's a niche market that has never been mainstream like STAR WARS. I sat one day and realized that for GENERATIONS to make sense you'd need to watch literally 24 hours' worth of TOS and TNG beforehand. Before this, FIRST CONTACT was probably the best intro-to movie for Trek because it shows how it all began and Alfre Woodard acts as the neophyte's representative into that world.

He this movie was made just for Trekkies like yourseld, it will only make $40-60 million. None of the moves were big box office draws.
