Bristol Palin, Candies Foundation Team Up To Prevent Teen Pregnancy

The Candies Foundation announced Tuesday it has appointed teen mom Bristol Palin as its new ambassador. The foundation, which encourages abstinence to prevent pregnancy among teenage girls, has chosen Palin to help promote National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy on May 6.

In a release from the foundation, Palin said that she feels she can be an example to other young women about the consequences of teen pregnancy. "If I can prevent even one girl from getting pregnant, I will feel a sense of accomplishment," she said.

According to a press release, Palin will participate in a town hall on May 6 and in various interviews to promote the event.

Although Palin, whose son Tripp was born in December, has been "focused on college, advocating abstinence and raising Tripp," according to a family spokesperson, she told Fox News in February that abstinence "is not realistic" for young people.

Some have found Palin's involvement with the issue too controversial. Late last year, USA Today pulled a full-page PSA from The Candies Foundation that featured pictures of Palin and fellow teen mother Jamie Lynn Spears, citing fear of offending readers.

Sooo who's taking care of her baby right now? Her mother? How is she "working her butt off to finish school"? Because I'm pretty sure schools in session and that she dosn't go to school in New York

This poor girl! Doesn't she have a voice of her own? She talks about saving other girls heartache, but she won't elaborate how. She isn't really using the events of her life to change anythin; she's not willing to discuss them openly.

Bristol and Todd Palin are on the Today Show with Matt Lauer now. She brought Tripp along & is holding him. Mixed message from her - What she is saying is how hard her life is now having the huge responsibility of a single mom, and abstinence would be the best way for teens to avoid having such a hard life brought on by an early pregnancy. But her body language with Tripp (understandably) is saying that he was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Just hope she continues on with her education because she is right at bottom with such a huge responsibility for life.

How can she speak against teen pregnancy when she paints a perfect picture with her father on the Today show with the pretty baby in her arms? It seems like all turned out well for her. I bet many young girls watching are thinking, "wow, that looks fun!" The Today show reporters are all ooing over the baby. There is nothing wrong with that, but it hardly presents the picture of how difficult it is for a young girl to deal with this problem.

Neither Jamie Lynn Spears nor Bristol Palin are acceptable role models for my ten year old daughter.

I prefer strong, successful, accomplished young women who make the right choices and complete their educations, follow their dreams, and become mothers when they are mature and financially able to support children. These two are rich, spoiled girls who have little in common with the average Amercian girl teen. They won't ever really have to face the realities of parenting without an education because they don't actually have to support themselves.

Totally worth the trip (or should that be Tripp??) When I first heard that the Candies Foundation was behind this, I checked out Candies.com -- as noted in the link, what they're peddling does not promote abstinence! The teen pregnancy problem (which was around when I was a teen 40 years ago) is not going to be solved with this approach.

This is like an arsonist touring to promote fire safety, I have seen her interviewed, very gently, on this topic and she makes her Mom sound like a Rhodes scholar. She has absolutely no clue or point to make as far as I can tell. She ditched the father as soon as the baby was born, so that doesn't say much for her judgement, either. If he was that useless, why did she sleep with him.
I would rather take reproductive advice from Octomom than listen to Bristol fumble for a tiny glimmer of insight.
