Kirstie Alley: 'I Gained 83 Pounds' And Love Butter

Today, Alley says she is primed to hire a trainer, toss the butter and sign up for a triathlon in order to whittle her "schlumpy" figure back down to a bikini-ready 140 lbs. "I'm going to have to work harder than last time," she says, but "I'm way excited." In a candid interview, Alley sat down with PEOPLE's Elizabeth Leonard to talk about how she piled on the pounds -- and how she plans to get her body, confidence and -- yes! --even her groove back.

Okay, how did this happen?
It started with New Year's [2008], right after leaving Jenny Craig. When you're a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, there's responsibility. You have a person every week standing over you when you get on the scale, and I did it naked because those panties could weigh 30 lbs.! It was amazingly successful. But the first nail in the coffin was that I didn't have to weigh in. I just sort of went wild.

I very much admire her honestly, but clearly, she has absolutely no discipline. She said it herself...once Jenny Craig didn't weigh her every day, she started stuffing her face.

How does someone increase her weight by more than 50% without doing anything about it?

I love butter, too but never gain weight. (Don't lose it, but don't gain it either.)

She is making a career out of being a fat celebrity, as is Carnie Wilson (temporarily silent- until her next binge).

Too bad- she was great on Cheers- go back to acting and find a lifestyle rather than a gimmick that's conducive towards a thinner, healthier being.

In the article she says she "fell off the horse"....seems more likely that she ate the horse

She is susceptible to addictions, and is impulsive. And she has great determination in spurts.
She needs a more structured life with strong people around her to keep her in the zone.
She can make anything comedic - and many can laugh with her because we have been there, too.

I ALWAYS thought Kirstie was hot, whether thin or full-bodied, even at 58. It isn't her weight that turns me off--it's her idiotic scientolog­y.membersh­ip. Leave COS, Kirstie and be happy with yourself, slim or zaftig. THAT will make you beautiful again, whatever weight you are.

Depends, I have a female friend is very athletic and is 5'8" and 140 all muscle (which weighs more). There is also the fact she is a built a bit more like Xena than Barbie.

I don't think Kirstie Alley gets it. First time she dropped the lbs for a Jenny Craig contract. Now she's losing for a triathalon. She needs to lose weight on her own, for herself, for her health, NOT to get back on the cover of People Magazine. Man, what celebs won't do for publicity...
