I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Dick Cheney

Since leaving office, Dick Cheney has been on a whirlwind media tour of Obama-hate. He told CNN's John King that President Obama has raised the risk of attack on America, he called the new president's economic policies "devastating," and he said Obama's trips abroad were "disturbing."

Well, David Letterman thought it was time to remind our former VP of his time in office with a segment called "Dick Cheney: How'd He Do?" It doesn't turn out well for Dick.

The main lesson from the Bush years:

Never elect a Sith Lord as VP.

So now Republicans are making the bizarre argument that their torture isn't torture because of the SERE program where we train our soldiers to withstand torture by introducing them to the techniques of foreign torturers in controlled, safe, optional exercises.

By that logic, none of the torture they're being trained to withstand would be torture when foreign governments do it, and therefore John McCain wasn't tortured. Makes zero sense.

They're really scraping the bottom of the barrel at this point.

Here's a simple way to understand the difference between SERE and real torture:

S&M. Whips and chains. Leather suits. Gimps. Cutting. Asphyxia. These are all legal and tolerable sexual practices between consenting adults.

But if you went outside right now and tied someone to a tree and started whipping them and cutting them and having sex with them without consent, it'd be rape. And not just rape, but torture.

It's a pretty easy distinction to see... for sane people. For those of us who aren't sociopaths.

Torture is torture because the person being tortured didn't sign up for it. It's torture because the psychological and physical differences between being tortured for real and being able to stop simulated torture any time you want couldn't be more obvious.

There are no "safe words" in real torture.

Actually, by my understanding there are safe words in this case.
"Iraq did it."

As a general rule, deployment of overwhelming military force against civilian targets generally leads to massive civilian casualties. This is currently happening today in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan, Recently, Gaza, and before that Lebanon, experienced awful civilian casualties.

Typically, it is the incumbent administration that provides the fodder for satirists, but Republicans are in such deep denial over their own failures that they remain the butt of the joke even with only 40 Senate seats.

Did you ever see Dave riffing for years on President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky? Very disrespectful and rude, but very funny. Did you see Dave challenge John McCain face to face during the 2008 Presidential campaign? Do you recall Great Moments In Presidential Speeches in honour of GW Bush for about 7 years? I love Jon Stewart. But Dave has been the man for decades. His friends Paul Schaeffer and band have longbeen the hottest live house band on network TV.

Bush Cheney did NOT keep American safe. They shifted the problems to Iraq. Many Americans have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. How safe is that?
Had a foreign government invaded and occupied America, we would have a uprising like none have seen.
Chaney is the MOST unpopular x politician in this country. At least Bush knows to go hide and keep his mouth shut.
In my opinion they both need some time in jail for the mess, economic disaster, torture, invading a country which had nothing to do with 9/11, lying to us to justify their actions.
Let's hope American never has leaders like these two again. What they did was criminal. And their actions made America LESS safe.
Thanks David for the reminder of the Bush Cheney debacle.

Republicans insult our allies by ignoring the attacks they suffered from Al Qaeda after 2001. The attacks in Bali, Madrid and London cost thousands of lives, but Cheney prefers to score phony political points rather than acknowledge the sacrifices that they made to serve his failed foreign policies.

There was a time in recent years I thought Dave was losing his edge, but it's back and I enjoy watching him again. Stewie is still great but needs to drop the dead weight "talent" on his show that is dragging him down.
