I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Over the past few days Republicans in Congress have begun a sustained attack on the President for pursuing a Guantanamo Bay policy that they say would result in a scenario tantamount to terrorists being released in the United States.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans put out a mock movie preview titled, "Guantanamo Bay Terrorists: Coming To A Neighborhood Near You?" The Michael Bay-esque clip seems designed to suggest that detainees at the Cuba-based facility will be moving in next door once the prison is closed -- per the Obama administration's order.

"Over the past two weeks, I and others have asked the Attorney General to provide the American people with the assurance that closing Guantanamo will keep the American people as safe as Guantanamo has. We've asked a series of questions. So far, these questions have gone unanswered," read a separate statement from Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The whole thing is a bit absurd, not least because it has been ruled that these detainees have the right to challenge their detention in a U.S. civilian court. Politically, the argument is a loser. In an interview, prominent GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio told Greg Sargent that such a line of attack risks making the party look "out of touch and irrelevant."

Mainly, however, the proposition that Obama is making the country less safe by potentially transferring Guantanamo detainees to domestic locations is an indictment, in a way, of those U.S. security facilities. Some of these centers, after all, hold mass murderers, serial killers and other military prisoners.

Either way, the line of attack against Obama is picking up some steam, in part because congressional Democrats -- including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid -- are withholding comment on the policy until a report on detention practices is released in July. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs was asked about the topic during Wednesday's briefing and this is what he had to say:

"The review that the president ordered at the very beginning of this administration is ongoing. I know the Justice Department and many players throughout the White House are involved daily on this issue," he said. "There have been discussions [with Republicans] but I will check exactly at what level. But the president and his team are working the review and again there are many decisions that have to be made over the course of the year long period outline [at the beginning of his presidency]."

Hey, not to worry neighbors!...we've already got dangerous "domestic-ter.rorists" sentenced under the Patriot Act and eco-ter.rorists" sentenced under AETA (Animal Enterprise Ter.rorist Act, kind of an ev.il stepsister to the Patriot Act) in a neighborhood near you. Some are even held pretty much incommunicado in maximum security "CMUs" (Communication Management Units) such as those in Terre Haute, Indiana and Marion, Illinois..prisoners refer to that one as "Little Guantanamo" and speculation is that it will, indeed, house some of those from Gitmo.

Shouldn't that make us all feel better, more safe and secure, knowing our own domestic ter.rorists are already contained safely behind barbed-wire? Any new additions, as threats to the homeland, will surely be entitled to the same denied rights, eh? It's a beautiful day...

I just do not get it. We have 2.3 million currently in US prisons and in theory America is safer for doing so. Adding a few hundred more in MAXIUM security will not make America any less safe. Furthermore, give them their day in court.

GOP always claim less government?, try Somalia!.... because your party is lousy in managing government, does not mean when a compitent administration comes around, big government cannot be managed, or run efficiently.
I tell you folks what! go on hibernation for 8 years...that is how long it will take for your party to have any chance to retake the "white house" or (People's House)

If terrorists again attack our country it will be with the aid and abetting of Republicans, starting with Dick Cheney.
The GOP is 80% white and christian and they see not only their cultural issues under attack by a black Democrat , but worse is that the american people don't seem to care. If the GOP cannot divide the country on cultural issues, as they've been doing for 40 years, then all that is left is, to quote Pat Buchanan, "pitchforks and muskets."

I fear real harm from Republicans more than from Islamic terrorists because we can easily stop Islamic terrorists. The anti-Americanism of the GOP is much harder to isolate and eliminate.

If these people are so dangerous, why haven't they been brought to trial? It's only been 7+ years for some of them.

I wouldn't want Bush or Cheney or any of their minions in my neighborhood. It's bad enough that John McCain is within 50 miles of my home.

I don't recall the residents of the cities of Guantanamo and Santiago de Cuba being consulted before Bush started jailing alleged terrorists in their backyard.

Yeah, Fort Leavenworth is notoriously unsecure. Penetentiary inmates escaping right and left. The citizens of Leavenworth just live in fear.

For most of the ad, it looks as if the "detainees" are being sent to Army bases (those aren't secure?) or prisons (ditto). At the end, ("not in MY state"), it sounds as if they're accusing the government of buying houses for them with cute front yards & window boxes. Will someone please buy these people a clue?

On the other hand, if we keep pointing out how ridiculous they are, someone MIGHT buy them a clue, they'll get their collective act together & have an actual message come next election cycle. I say, let's just go along with whatever they say & do, let them think we're scared of them & let them keep on truckin'. When they lose again in '10 & '12, they still won't have a clue.

I hope the above makes some sense. I've had a long day listening to someone who says the fact the Pres. still hasn't chosen a DC church is bad news for the country & the reason the country is in the toilet. I can listen to it for just so long before my brain melts.
