Meghan

In her Daily Beast column, Meghan McCain writes about Bristol Palin's campaign for abstinence and how it relates to a general lack of honesty within the Republican party when it comes to safe sex.

Let me get something straight: Bristol Palin, as an eighteen-year-old adult, is free to make her own choices and decide how she wants her life to unfold. But for whatever reasons, the American public and media remain overly engrossed in our politicians' sex lives and, as in this case, those of their families. There's an especially unhealthy attitude among conservatives. Daughters of Republican politicians aren't expected to have sex, let alone enjoy it--as if there were some strange chastity belt automatically attached to us female offspring. God forbid anyone talk realistically about life experiences and natural, sexual instincts. Nope, the answer is always abstinence.

Research backs McCain up -- abstinence-only education doesn't work.

Palin herself backed off an earlier statement that abstinence is "unrealistic" on the "Today" show Wednesday. Her former boyfriend (and father of her child) maintains that it is.

Meanwhile, President Obama eliminated abstinence-only funding from the budget.

Meghan,
If you keep on thinking this way, you have a good shot at becoming the potus on your terms

Maybe if the republicans would just talk about sex honestly for a change they wouldn't always be so darn horny.

To be fair, moderates in the GOP are only now dumping the homophobic Tribulation crazies and the anti-abortion Apocalypse-mongers because the alliance no longer results in national election wins.

It's fair to discuss whether Republican moderates are coming to their senses, but it would be hard to argue that reason an any principled rationale is at the base of the rather sudden shift.

i like a lot of what Megan McCain is saying, and there's even something authentic about her, but it's pretty clear that a lot of moderate Republicans are shifting out of unprincipled political expediency, instead of because of some basic epiphany about the human condition and our relationship with the universe.

Where are all these "moderate Republicans" you speak of? I see none.

The visible Reps are all fawning over Rush Limbaugh, mouthing hateful idiocies from Glen Beck, and stumbling over themselves to see who can appeal most to the conservative base of close-minded, anti-science, anti-birth control "religious" zealots.

McCain (Meagan, that is) is one of the few who seems to take moderate views--and, like most o fthe others--she isn't elected to anything.

They really are just the "party of 'no'".

Yeah, it was a stretch to say "a lot of moderate Republicans".

There are but a few, and some of them are faking it.

That Cantor is trying to play it moderate is laughable.

If the Republicans were smart the would see that McCain is their brightest shining star right now. She has mass appeal and could help repair their bruised and battered party with her ability to draw center leaning conservatives as well as moderates. But they'll never "get it." They are the party of "cut your nose off to spite your face."

MM could care less about appeasing the left. She is a mouthpiece for the cons and their bid for 2012.Where do you think her loyalities lie, with you, or with her trust fund? The old cons told her to go fourth and spread the lies. Make them think that we have new blood in the agency. This is only the beginning.

The inability to accept people like Miss McCain is what is destroying the Republican Party.

Why is she still a republican? And you think she is sane? Go figure. She is playing the game folks, playing the game.

She really comes off great, and I admit, I dig her alot. She is smart and doesnt seem to take the same attitude as alot of others do in that party. She seems grounded in reality.

Personally, I blame the GOP's weird attachment to religion.

While I disagree with her politics , I like that she is sane and rational

I really enjoy seeing Megan on talk shows, she smart, nice & dress's well. The top GOP at this point, and she is McCain's girl. McCain's a Ok guy, just gets caught up in heavy GOP tatics. He should be proud of her & go after other Republicans who try and put her in her place. She is their future and I hope she can get through to them. I support anyone for common sense change, as a Democrat , I support her.

The McCain of 2000 - 2004 was a man I could respect . BUT- He sunk so low during the campaign- with his and Palens insults, smears, and at times made up ads that were very misleading or false.
He is no longer ' mavericky '

This all sounds so rational. I wish more conservatives would listen to McCain's talking points... then maybe I wouldn't live in constant fear of psycho pathological nutcases taking over my country again.

Instead of being a spokesperson for abstinence, perhaps Bristol would be more effective if she became a spokesperson for a program that helps unwed mothers with education and job training along with emotional support.

Gah, that would be rational thinking at work...and we all know the GOP thinks its still 1954 America.

1954? Yet somehow those Commie blacklisted Hollywood writers pulled off one of the biggest "PC malfunctions" ever committed on the FCC. A lead character named "Beaver Cleaver".

HP repeatedly putting the next generation of the American Oligarchy in the news to provide the name recognition needed to win public office in the future - sick.
