UPDATE: COWABUNGA! MOLLY FOUND A SAFEHOUSE

New York Animal Care & Control call operator Sharema Govan tells HuffPost Green that Molly the cow has found a new home at a farm. When asked if Molly would be slaughtered, Govan replied, "Absolutely not!"

She directed us to someone else for more details and we're waiting on a return call now.

EARLIER, VIA AP STORY ON MOLLY THE COW:

NEW YORK -- A cow has escaped from a New York City slaughterhouse and may have a new lease on life.

Police say the black heifer bolted Wednesday afternoon from Musa Hala Inc., which butchers animals according to religious restrictions.

It wandered in Queens for nearly a mile before police captured it an hour later and took it to an Animal Care and Control center, where it was nicknamed Molly.

Officials there are looking into whether Molly can be placed at a farm sanctuary or must be returned for slaughter. It depends on whether anyone claims her.

In 2002, an Ohio cow jumped a 6-foot fence to escape from a Cincinnati meatpacking plant and ran free in a park for 10 days. She was nicknamed Cinci Freedom.

I am real happy for Molly but let's talk about humans a bit. Forgive me for the change of subject but I just saw story on tv about the San Joaquin Valley and the shut down of water over the Delta Smelt? Is this true- could some of you Californians tell the story? thanks,

Perhaps you should google the local news outlet of San Joaquin Valley and find your answer.

Makes me want to eat the way I always have. Still the past few years I have become more of a locovoure and raise my own meat. BIG difference when you have to slaughter your own turkey for Thanksgiving.. I started eating BOCO burgers shortly after (quite good actually).

Agree. A lot of proud, chest-pumping, burger eaters on this thread who, I doubt, would last 5 minutes in a slaughter house. Not hating on anyone, it's just easy to boast when you look the other way. And if a burger eater can reconcile both, then at least it's honest.

Ummmmm, molly can come here.. I swear she'll be OK.

Good for the cow, Once you name an animal it is hard to eat them.. must be why I have so many damn chickens.

Hurray for Molly.....

Did you all know..... that the "farming" and slaughtering of animals as food is a major contributor to global warming---from the transmission of methane gas in the atmosphere and through the use of fossil fuels in the industrialization production of animal as food.

Also much of the latest research is finding that many of the epidemic diseases in our culture are the result of eating too much animal protein.

Our food taking habits are killing the planet and ourselves. We need to change this. It is not good for us and it is inhumane and downright cruel to the non-humans.

I agree. This fact is so little known, but yes, industrial methods of farming and slaugther have indeed devastating results on the ozon layer. And the consumers can do something about, by making wise choices.

As for the research about protein: you also right, but the findings, sadly, were already known long time ago, but the thinking about the norms of protein intake were combining lobbing and "common sense logic," which is quite often not logical nor common sense. There were scientists who pointed out the dangers of too much protein intake, and pointed out the the food pyramide, and other recommendations suggests way too much protein.

And if only US, as just one single country could limit the meat intake only 10% it would be a huge difference. Not to mention the amount of plant food surplus. Or if Europe would join in the same efforts, it would have huge impact.

Cruelty... The non-humans are viewed a s objects, and mostly raised in unhumane conditions which are justified by some perversity of logic. And don't we really need to kill to eat?

I agree, the smarter of the two should live. Now I say ship the butchers to some deserving cannibalistic tribe in the amazon as a form of karmic balance, It would improve our gene pool too.....ok just kidding, please no angry disappointed post's from the Amazon interior.

While i would put them on an uninhabited island, I laud your proposal. Let them slaughter each other. No kidding!
06:44 AM on 05/09/2009
Are you saying that you would like the Muslims to slaughter themselves on an island?

Every living being deserves a chance to live. I think Molly will replace Wentworth Miller in Prison Break season 6.

You join those butchers on the island then.

Problem here is not eating meat, it is they named the cow.. I cannot eat a named animal.

Heres a trick for PETA, just spray paint names on the cows prior to slaughter, it will scar the people working in the plant and the people eating them.

I name all my animals, including the ones I intend to eat. For example, I like to raise a lamb every year, fattening him up on summer pasture for butchering in October. This year's lamb has been named Vince Lambardi of Lambo Field.
