SAN DIEGO — Adam Lambert's old high school put on a show Friday for the "American Idol" finalist, with cheerleaders, a marching band and thousands of fans and students celebrating their hometown music hero.

In return, Lambert, 27, offered the crowd at Mt. Carmel High School two songs and a few words of appreciation.

"This is so weird," he said, thanking the crowd from a makeshift stage on the packed stadium's field. He advised students to "believe in yourself" no matter what others may say.

His entrance _ in a cherry-red convertible _ was heralded by the screams of cheerleaders. The marching band played as Lambert slowly cruised the stadium track, drawing shouts from the bleachers.

Lambert's renditions of Michael Jackson's "Black or White" and "Mad World" won applause despite a tinny sound system.

His "American Idol" competitors, Danny Gokey of Milwaukee and Kris Allen of Conway, Ark., were also feted by their towns Friday, with Fox taping the events to air next week on "Idol."

The winner of Fox TV's singing contest will be announced on the May 20 "American Idol" finale.

In San Diego, a woman wearing a sports bra but sans blouse rushed the stage to get closer to Lambert and was quickly hustled off. When Mayor Jerry Sanders stepped up to declare Friday "Adam Lambert Day" in San Diego, he jokingly vowed to keep his shirt on.

The stadium was draped with banners reading, "Mt. Carmel (Hearts) Adam!" and, "You're Our American Idol." A poster toted by a fan proclaimed, "Adam, You're a Rock God" _ echoing show judge Kara DioGuardi's assessment of Lambert, who has performed in musical theater.

He's been a consistent favorite with the "Idol" judges, even the tough-minded Simon Cowell.

Lambert was a standout in high school, too, said Bryan Clark, 26, of San Diego who graduated in the class of 2000 with him and attended the celebration Friday.

"He was definitely good," said Clark, who recalled seeing Lambert perform at pep rallies and other school events. "I'm proud of the guy. It's always good to see people making their dreams happen."

Geri Johnson, along with granddaughter Olivia Mercado and her young friends, had been on Lambert's trail since 5 a.m. Friday, when he visited local radio and TV stations.

"It was pretty rowdy," Johnson, of nearby El Cajon, said of the early morning crowd. So why did they make the effort?

"He's really cute," said 12-year-old Mercado. Friend Quiana McMorris, 15, who brought along a stuffed animal as a gift for Lambert, offered her view: "He's a really good singer."

Robin Andersen came to Mt. Carmel High from nearby Carlsbad with her 13-year-old daughter, d'Lainey Forrester, because "you always have to support hometown people. Plus, I think he's going to win."

Asked if she thought Lambert _ who favors black leather and matching nail polish _ might prove too bold for the American audience, Andersen had a quick response: "My 88-year-old mother thinks he should win. And she's as conservative as they come."

I think Adam is incredibly talented and will probably have a long and successful Broadway career. If they ever do a Rex Reed biopic - he is their man. However, he seems too much of a professional to be the winner of American Idol. He has toured with Wicked and recorded the theme song to Randy Jackson's dance show. He's been in the business for 10 years - it just seems to not be in the spirit of American Idol. I like the idea of them finding some unknown talent from the middle of nowhere and polishing them up and making them a star. Kris and Danny seem much more in the spirit of the show than Adam.

Adam Lambert has been a small fish in a big pond for a long time. He was in Wicked in LA and just happened to be one of many who sang on a demo for the Randy Jackson show. It is pure coincidence, He has struggled to make a career. This is his big moment that he's been working for his entire life. He's worked hard for this - but he never had a record deal which would have precluded him from being on the show. He is on AI fair and square.

Unfortunately, probably so. I can hardly remember any song either Danny or Kris have done. They are very good singers (usually), but not at all memorable. Not even close to David Cook or Kelly Clarkson. Adam may be "too much" for an Idol win, but that's okay because he will be as big or bigger star than any of the Idol winners have been. I would not be watching the show at all this year without Adam. He could make any type of album he wants to make and he will do it like nobody else ever could. He is way too talented to just be limited to Broadway...that is more for Clay Aiken who has no originality at all but is a very competent singer. I agree with mcbaby2 that Adam's previous experience was not close to what he is doing on Idol...he has been "in the chorus" and an "understudy" for Wicked and has done a few other plays, but not in a major role. This is his big shot and I am thrilled he's had the chance.

kara diaguardi was at the president's dinner last night. representing the new music monopoly. with money to burn. ever get the feeling that the talent you like is the last to receive your hard earned cash?

A.I. makes a ridiculous amount of money thanks to all the idiots who pay to text them. They make money offer advertising, product placement, syndication... the list goes on. It's a shame that anyone who wins becomes an indentured servant to them. 5% goes to the lawyers, 20% to whomever is managing them, 25% to 19E, then at least another 38% to the IRS. Oh, and the record label is only going to pay them 10-12% royalties on what they earn after they payback the advance the label gives them to record, cost to package the cds, and music video production. I get that this person may never have made it without A.I., but really why not just take 2 years rather than the max that the law will allow? Greed. Like I said, it's indentured servitude. I hope Adam loses. Let the other two mediocres (can't believe Alison lost) win. Adam, you're going to get a record deal anyway. Hopefully, they don't have everyone on the show tied to the same greedy contract!

Most mobile phone plans include unlimited texting now, so it's not the windfall you may think.

All of the top 10 are on contract to 19 Entertainment, regardless of who wins. Of course, nearly everybody else on the planet would consider this an opportunity, but I guess there's at least one who considers it slavery. And the contract is standard, if not generous, for the industry. These kids aren't good enough or popular enough to write their own ticket. That's reserved for the U2s, Rolling Stones, and Justin Timberlakes of the world.

He drew the smallest crowds of any of them, both Danny and Kris had HUGE crowds with tens of thousands of people...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:08 PM on 05/10/2009

Yeah it seems coming from a big city, seeing a 'celebrity' is no big deal. He seemed pleased with the turnout regardless of the numbers.

I wonder how the crowds will be if a Boston contestant ever made it to the final 3?

Kris' turnout was amazing.

Adam, was in his modest, low-key, personal mode when he went home, rather than in his bigger than life, over the top, performance mode. He CHOSE to hold his event at his old high school, which limited the size, rather than having a big city-wide parade and spectacle, which would've made it a huge event.

He did nice, long interviews on local TV and radio stations - and had fun. Those interviews can be found on YouTube.

Whether or not he wins, his life is changed forever. His privacy is gone. Paparazzi follow him wherever he goes. People interrupt his dinner when he's out.

I'm sure having a quiet event with 10,000 people or less was much easier on him than the huge events Danny and Kris had to endure. And probably gave him more time to spend with his family.

He's not gonna get much more time to himself after the Idol finale. Plus, San Diego is more used to giving celebrities their space than Hicksville, Arkansas or Minneapolis are.

But hey, at least THEY got to SING at THEIR events - which is more than what Matt got when HE went home. Kalamazoo also put on a big Welcome Home event, but Matt wasn't allowed to sing - the American Idol contract prevents ANY of the contestants from singing in public until after the Idol Tour - except, of course, the Final Three on their Hometown trips, all filmed by Idol.

Katherine McPhee had a small crowd at her homecoming. I think in that part of the country it's like ho hum whereas in other parts of the country it's a really big deal.

Vote for the person you like and you hope to see win. No matter what the contracts say whomever wins will still benefit majorly. There are always loopholes in any contract and I'm certain Adam will not be played a fool if he wins.

Yeah, keep thinking that. 19E contracts are just about iron-clad and they'll own him for 7 years.

I will - thanks. To go from unknown to instant stardom, he'll be just fine.

Oh for God's sake, settle down!

If Adam Lambert makes albums that sell big, and 19E gets 25%, then good for both of them!
Seriously, when a show comes along and plucks you out from relative obscurity, gives you a platform to woo the home audiences without having to jump through all of the standard hoops, then I think the contract is totally fair.

Remember, there is no guarantee that an AI winner will make ANY money for he studios (like Taylor Hicks). They invest a lot into their winners, providing them with every opportunity to sell themselves and any future product.

Eventually, Adam Lambert will be released from any deal he signs. Once he becomes big enough, he can force his way out with a team of killer lawyers.

And if 19E wants to keep a cash cow in the ranks, they will pony up everything he wants. I am NOT worried for Adam. He may be sweet, nice, talented and humble, but stupid?

Like a Fox

I agree - I think its wrong to not vote for him if you like him. Give him his glory if you feel he deserves it - I certainly do.

Lucky Allison - she got booted! Now if only Adam could be so lucky!

DON'T VOTE FOR ADAM!
PRAY THAT KRIS OR DANNY WIN!!

Does that sound like I'm an Adam-hater? Think again! I love Adam's amazing talent ! I want only the BEST for him! But being the American Idol is NOT IT!

Adam may WANT to win this reality show - and I'd love for him to have everything in the WORLD he so richly DESERVES - but ADAM IS ALREADY A STAR!

Read the two links that follow, then ask yourself do you think our talented, gorgeous, sweet, humble, generous Adam really deserves this horror story that is an American Idol CONTRACT??

Read the TRUTH about the CONTROL AI has over artists with their iron clad contracts - they literally become slaves to AI! And if they don't cooperate, AI is contractually free to DESTROY them - even LIE about them!:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/750845/why_american_idol_winners_really_end.html?cat=31

It starts with this Release that all auditioners HAVE to sign before they're allowed to even audition - then, even more restrictive contracts follow if they're chosen to compete:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/488676/American-Idol-Release

And remember, most agents take a 15-20% commission of their "property's" income - 19 Entertainment (Simon Fuller) takes 25-50% of their income - FOREVER!!!

Adam has studied business management in the music industry. I sure he was aware of the consequence of his choices when he entered this competition...to win

Read the links - no one can know in advance what these people are capable of. He'll be hard pressed to find any lawyer specializing in entertainment law who would be able to get him out of 19 Entertainment contracts. Just studying entertainment business management wouldn't give anyone a clue!

Please - for Adam - don't vote for him! He'll do just fine without being this year's American Idol!

On Tuesday, they will each sing two songs. One that they picked for themselves, and the other one the judges picked for them. Adam will be singing "One" by U2, Kris will be singing "Apologize" and Danny will be singing "Dance little sister".

Sings Hebrew well, however.

Couldn't care less if he wins but am fascinated that women swoon over this openly gay young man as though somehow their magical bodies or charm are going to change his sexual orientation.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 AM on 05/09/2009

No one thinks they can change him. I don't get why men find it hard to believe women can be attracted to someone without it being about sex. Women can really be friends and find a man sexy without wanting f@%k him.
