Border Fence

Washington Post:

In announcing the resumption of a "virtual fence" on the U.S.-Mexican border yesterday, the Obama administration sent a powerful message of continuity with President George W. Bush, who included a pledge to secure the border as part of a 2006 effort to persuade Congress to overhaul the nation's immigration laws.

If this virtual fence does work it will only raise the cost of crossing - not prevent it and force those that do cross to stay here and settle in instead of moving back and forth to their families, which, by the way, will be brought over too.

virtual fence. Funny. So we can watch videos of people crossing the border. LOL
any border security should be classified as vaporware. Its promised, there is big fanfare as to a release date and how great it will be, even orders taken and money changed hands. But in the end, there will be nothing, like the Emperors new clothes. Im not a fan of border fence to keep honest people out who are just looking for a chance out. Im a fan of it to be the dishonest, the harmful , the drugs, the human traffiking and guns trade from crossing over easily as they do now. And believe me, I support guns, but not illegal use of them. I however an a huge anti human traffiking person, and know of many cases of children being taken in and out of our country on a daily basis. That is good enough reason for me to build a huge fence and monitor everyone who crosses.

The first electronic fence boondoogle from Boeing was a total failure.
Boeing was paid a billion dollars (they spent every penny of it) and nothing worked right.
So sad to see this dismal failure continuing.

"the Obama administration sent a powerful message of continuity with President George W. Bush"

Ummm, I hate to rain on their parade, but the only powerful message that was sent was a powerful message of responsibility. What does responsibility mean in direct terms? Doing the right thing.

Plus, show me where Bush ever cared to secure our borders? They are as still wide open now as when he took office in January 2000. All he did was make a token deployment of National Guard to just 1 state in a political maneuver to win votes for him and his Party. It doesn't take 4 years to be even a virtual fence. A real one could already have been built and we'd have been all the better for it.

But now, we have to cast a wary eye on everyone who comes here illegally. Are they simply wanting a better life? Or are they members of Al Qaeda? Or are they a member of MS-13? Or are they a member of the Gulf Cartel?

Right there, on that short list of questions is already 3 times a many reasons to come here for bad intentions than good intentions. So, what are we going to do about it? And what are we going to do about MS-13 putting bounties on the heads of border agents? Bush backed down from that fight. Will Obama? Doesn't look like it.

In some areas, that's sadly true, like torture, being above the law, not holding people accountable, list goes on.

That's because immigration reform isn't going to pass without the fence. Too much opposition from both sides.

Tough employer penalties and enforcement would certainly contain much of the problem. The employers so willing to hire those for cheap labor need to be dealt with!

Best Post Ever!! THAT is something that needs to be taken into serious consideration.

This subject is something that is very big in my current State of Georgia right now. They want us to provide proof of citizenship when we show up at the polls. Yet they do not, and will not ever, require workers to show proof of citizenship in order to hold a job. All they want is a warm body. And you can be sure they probably hope it's an illegal which would save them money by not having to pay them what the law requires.

I wonder if anyone would care to explain that double standard that you and I raised Sue? ;o)

We call this fence Obama's Folly. Obama can now officially join Bush in the gutter of shame.

Unfortunately, the majority of the American public will have it no other way. They want the border secured, and they are convinced a fence--either an actual structure or a virtual one--is going to do the job. I've heard this argument from liberals and conservatives, the left and the right, the Democrats, the Republicans, the Independents, and the Libertarians. Building a fence is a no-brainer for pleasing the public.

I had my house painted last week. I live in a wood house, and I had a group of five guys who spent five days painting. They power washed the whole house first, replaced all the trim that needed replacing, stained the doors, and painted EVERYTHING perfectly, not one drop of paint on my windows. They did a truly unbelievable job. Yep. That's why we have illegal immigration. These guys will work really hard and do a great job. And people like I will pay them to do it because I need to get it done, can't do it myself, and can't find anyone who is legal who will even ATTEMPT to do it as well as these guys will. I've learned that after sixteen years in Texas. I hire Hispanics to do everything around the house, not because they are less expensive but because they try so hard to do such a good job. They still believe there is an honor in trade-type jobs, and they take great pride in the work they do.

Bottom line is they work for less than you would be willing to pay Americans! My sister in law runs her business on this help so she can afford her million plus home in the mountains of Montanna and have it on the front page of some fancy magazine while her workers work hard but get little pay!

That's an interesting post and something you bring to light that usually isn't talked about. The fact that they are as capable of working just as hard as anyone else, maybe in some case better than. I even agree on the honor in doing a good job, since obviously the job they do will reflect on them.

However, they must also abide by our rules and laws. Particularly those on immigration. I have no problem with millions of people wanting to immigrate to this country. If you look back at the early 1900's, during the height of the huge numbers of immigrations to this country, you can see where many of them helped to make this country what it is today. Plus, the mixing and acceptance of many cultures makes us more interesting as a nation. In what other country can you have festivals and celebrations, even whole months, dedicated to a wide variety of cultures that we have come to accept? Where I lived in Florida, for example, we partied as hard on May 5th as we did on July 4th. ;o)

So there lies the problem. People not wanting to follow the rules no matter how good their intentions. Bush said he had good intentions in regards to carrying out torture, but still, he broke the law too and should be held just as accountable. If we allow people to make a mockery of our system and then go unpunished, what does that say about us?

I don't have a problem with people working in this country and trying to do the best job possible. I believe in the free market. Wherever I find the best worker, I will hire that person, whether that person is from this country or another. I don't consider this making a mockery out of our legal system. We have done this to ourselves, and once we chase all the Hispanic workers out of this country, good luck finding a plumber, house painter, or cabinet maker in Texas, who gives a beeeeep about the job he's doing. I hired a man, about thirty years old, to build all my cabinets in my study. Beautiful, beautiful work. Eight years later, every door still closes, every hinge is still attached. They do need to be repainted because they've gotten scuffed where the computers sit. I'm having the house painters come out and do that. I don't trust anyone else.

I don't see the problem. I have five hard-working men working at my house for a week, doing a great job that no one in this country wants to do, anymore. We've degraded craftsmen in this country so, that you NEVER hear a young man or woman say, "I want to be a cabinet maker," "I want to be house painter," or "I want to be a plumber." These are indeed crafts that take skill, and if you can do them well, you can make a good living. People in this country act like it's beneath them to do these jobs. They act like they can't get paid a decent salary for doing these jobs. So they don't do them, and, consequently, there isn't anyone else to do them but the immigrants, who not only will do the jobs, but will do the jobs extraordinarily well because they take pride in the work they do. I called a plumber from a plumbing company to fix a toilet upstairs. You know what he did? Came out and explained to me how I could fix it myself. Well, I can read a book for that. He tried to charge me sixty-five dollars for coming out, and I told him I wasn't going to pay him. He then said he would fix the toilet, and I told him, "Too late." The man who was in charge of the painters is getting me in touch with a plumber.

they work cheap, they are easy to command due to the fear of immigration, and you dont have to pay taxes, insurance, or any of those little nuances of gov laws and regulations. Sure there are a lot of people in the US who will and want to do those jobs. But if you dont want to pay a decent wage, or dont want to deal with normal schedules and workplace regulations , taxes and laws, then its great to hire the illegals. I wonder if the feeling would be the same if his boss thought the way he does?

maybe they should hire them to do your job if they do such a much better than American can?
I dont think it matters if what race or what country one comes from. If they have a good work ethic, they will do a good job, period. Im sure you could find Americans that would do just as good a job. But it might cost you more, and you might not get the control you have with illegals who are in fear of being turned in.

I lived on the border in Texas for a number of years and they DO pay not only the illegals LESS than they should, but it also drives down the wages of AMERICANS who are doing the same jobs. My next door neighbor was a LEGAL Mexican immigrant who was a skilled auto mechanic, and was paid only $8/hr. That was because over half the men in his shop were working in the US ILLEGALLY! THAT is why we need E-Verify. It is only the business owners who LOVE the illegals since they pay so little and make TONS of money off of them.

Guess who those business owners contribute to in political campaigns? They are the biggest donors who make damn sure that their workers stay down.

So, e-verify will make the employers pay up? How? By sending the illegal workers home, and making the employers hire legal American workers? I hope they have some auto mechanics in that town. When was the last time you heard someone say he wanted to be an auto mechanic? I haven't heard that since I was a teenager. We've got a great auto mechanic in my area. He's legal, and he's my age or a little older. We went through some really bad mechanics before him. Yet another "dieing art" in America. Anyhoo, the guy who runs that auto mechanics' shop should pay his workers more. I pay the guys who do work around my house very well, and I had to wait a month on the painters because they were so backed up. They are making good livings for themselves, if what I paid them is any indication. And they deserve every dime of it.
