Newt Gingrich: "McCarthyist" Obama Wants To "Put Terrorists On Welfare" (VIDEO)

Gingrich

In an interview that was fiery even by his standards, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused the Obama administration of coddling terrorists, tarred the idea of investigating the Bush administration as modern day "McCarthyism," and falsely charged that the Democratic-controlled Congress never tried to outlaw torture.

It was, if nothing else, an unrestrained tour de force in oppositional politics. Sitting down with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, Gingrich claimed that the former firm of Attorney General Eric Holder had represented 17 alleged terrorists on a pro-bono basis. "For no fee," he added, for good measure. "It is the largest single thing they were doing for free, defending Yemenis."

Firms like Holder's Covington & Burling, of course, have represented alleged terrorist under the notion that everyone deserves a legal defense, not out of some shared ideology or political sympathies. But context and clarification weren't Gingrich's order of business on Sunday. There was, he claimed, a "weird pattern" of Democratic administrations "defending alleged terrorists," as opposed to Bush officials, who "defend[ed] Americans."

"You look at the Obama administration," he said, "the number of attorneys that have been appointed who were defending alleged terrorists. There's this weird pattern where the Bush people wanted to defend Americans and were pretty tough on terrorists. These guys are prepared to take huge risks with Americans in order to defend terrorists."

And yet, even as he was asking the Obama administration lawyers whether they are now or have ever been representing terrorists, Gingrich managed to make accusations of McCarthyism. On the topic of investigating the authorization of torture by the Bush administration, he claimed: "What we're seeing now, in a very sad way, is as bitter a partisan attack on the Bush people, as much as we've seen since the McCarthy era. The degree that they're putting specific people at risk for criminal prosecution is unprecedented in modern America."

Making further political hay out of national security, Gingrich derided the White House Guantanamo policy as "nuts" and "crazy," declaring that the president was trying to "put alleged terrorists on welfare and have you pay for them and me pay for them so they get to be integrated into American society."

Where Guantanamo detainees will be shipped once that facility closes is in the process of being determined, with a report expected this summer. One place they surely will not end up is the typical American Main Street.

Even host Chris Wallace had to remark at Gingrich's chutzpah. Asked about Obama's planned commencement speech at the University of Notre Dame, Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism earlier this year, was typically strident. Obama has "voted to protect the right of the abortionists to kill babies still alive," he said, and is "the most radical of proabortion [sic] of any president." But then he stopped himself, and feigned modesty. "I'm a new convert. I will let the Vatican speak for the Church." Wallace chuckled, "A couple of years and you can speak for the Pope."

Clearly, Gingrich was not holding back many punches, despite having met with the president this past week to discuss education policy. His quips were aimed at Democrats in Congress as well, as he derided leadership in that party for not moving to stop the enhanced interrogation policies they currently criticize.

"They have had control since January 2007," he said. "They haven't passed a law making waterboarding illegal. They haven't gone into any of these things and changed law."

In February 2008, the Senate voted on the Intelligence Authorization Bill, which would have outlawed the use of waterboarding. President Bush vetoed the measure.

With regard to the 'evil' tortures' inflicted upon those who successfully murdered 3,000 plus Americans .... I admit that a catepillar in your cell , the 'muppets' theme at 130 decibels , and sleep deprivation , not to mention 'waterboarding' , ( a task that our military special forces endure in their training ) is really off the deep end .... Amazingly , the same folks who are so appalled by these 'outrageous' techniques , don't seem to be capable of even 'flinching' at the thought of a surgeon's scissors' being jammed into the brains of an 8 or 9 month old "fetus " , about to begin its way down the birth canal .... can anybody help me out with this dichotomy ? ..... kowa4826

I will happily explain this to you...if you can explain how the "culture of life" Republican Party gave us a government that killed a million Iraqis and caused 30,000 American Casualties in an unnecessary war of choice.

Can you also explain why the Republican Party is against realistic efforts to reduce teen pregnancy, and to provide social and economic support to young, poor, pregnant women so that they might be more likely to have their babies and raise them?

The most the newt (which is a slimy salamander if you didn't know) rants, the most the republican party sinks into the abyss.

McCarthyism to investigate war crimes, but not to investigate a president's sexual activity? Get real Newt -- you are one of the biggest losers.

No difference. Everyone in Congress understood Iraq build up. They all understood "enemy combatant". Majorities in both parties gave torture the nod. When we people stop thinking there are "different parties" we will stand a chance at saving ourselves. Government uses the party myth to divide people and stay in office. Politicians ( the vast majority ) are primarily bent on retaining their positions. All else is secondary. If government would adhere to the constitution we would be OK. Not perfect, but OK. Congresses "job" is to represent the States. What we have now is a government that represents itself. They do this well, in the short run. As the nation is systematically driven to bankruptcy they are filling there trunks with the profit. Where they think they'll go when the fleecing is over - I'm not sure.

You make a very important point, and one that underlines everything this nation has been going through for the past 8+ years. The contention that there are two, wholly separate ideological groups at play in American politics is what makes rhetorical strategies like name-calling work. "You can't believe him, he's a terrorist-hugging liberal." "You can't believe him, he's a fascist, pro-torture conservative." Both of these stands are nonsense, but they are promoted in an attempt to make winning elections a simple matter of out dissing the other side--as if American politics is nothing more than a football game, a battle of the jerseys.

The best thing happening in this country right now is a movement that is turning to the Constitution for solutions. Our constitution was formed in the same climate as we have today. Government is the modern monarchy. The only thing that can stop it is an educated informed society. Understanding the constitution and refusing any handouts that go outside constitutional parameters is key. Cicero said when the public discovers it can vote money from the government coffers - the Country, nation, culture is doomed. Every thing we need to survive is in the Constitution. We ignore it at our own peril. Yes, Newt is talking nutty. But he's talking that way to ensure division and distraction. What him and all party employees do, is get us to not see the important issues. Like that our government is breaking the law of the land. It's of the rails. Out of control. It, and by way of it, this country, is unrecognizable as the Republic that was built by our ancestors. Bottom line is: This nation has and is being stolen from it's citizens. In order for this to take place we had to, and must continue to allow it. As long as we allow ourselves to be distracted, intimidated, cajoled or frightened it will continue. History will repeat itself. We can never go back. But we can certainly take back the reigns.

Newt is itching to practice his sick politics of the Clinton years again. Republicans love to play the America middle class as their suckers. Disinformation is the Gop's greatest friend.

Nahh, Cletus.

Terrorists are people who CARRY OUT terrorism, not people who LOOK like them.

Investigating the Bush/Cheney crime cabal is called LAW ENFORCEMENT. "McCarthyism" is smearing INNOCENT people.

The Democratic-controlled Congress also never tried to outlaw grand theft auto... it's already ILLEGAL.

What a hai rball!

Actually, there has been more documents released that vindicate good ol' Joe McCarthy... looks like there was much more espionage going on... perhaps that's what led him to drink heavily.

And Newt's assertions are correct... The Democrats only bring up the word 't0rture' when it's politically expedient to do so. They play their supporters like whiny t0rtured violins... I'm StillAmused that you guys fall for it every time.

More newsmax gibberish.... Ask the battefield solders and intelligence officers who have to spend needless time and energy chasing down false leads produced by the torture...but then again all of you rethugs care about is window dressing. So maybe Democrats do understand torture while the rethugs certainly know "deferment"!

Jeepers creepers man, don't you know the millions of taxpayer dollars, like yours and mine that was being given to Afghannies at 15K at least a pop, as a bounty to turn in fellow Afghannies they suspected of being Jihad's? There is no telling how many have been tortured at GITMO and Rendition who are innocent. Including the fact, that the lead military tribunal prosecutor resigned in disgust at the government’s way of flushing down the waste pipe constitutional due process.

Out of one side of his mouth he's calling Dems McCarthyists and the other side of his mouth he's being a McCartyist and accusing Obama of unamerican activities. Unreal.

Umm, do you even know who McCarthy is?

"Joe only wagged his finger and got dr'unk" - Hear of the blacklisting? Or how about all of the Congressional Hearings?

What the Justice Dept is doing right now is it's job, investigating and prosecuting criminals.

The level Gingrich's sophistry is actually rather flattering, because it means he's got nothing. He's dealing from a dead hand, and going strictly on bluff and bluster. This is what people who are guilty of crimes try to do, get the conversation onto something else, that can be inflated into demagogic fear mongering. And, as usual, the talking pointers are doing what they accuse others of doing, in this instance, McCarthyism. The words and accusations that Gingrich uses are straight out of the playbook of Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy. Spurious and unsupported accusations that actually are saying treason without actually saying it. Tap dancing around what he's actually saying, to establish plausible deniability when he is challenged on his specious lies. This method of attempting to turn the conversation is so old, it needs to be dusted off each time they use it. Talk about going back to the well again and again and again...guess ya just can't let it go when it worked so well when Bee Gees were hot! Pathetic.

Because they are anything but fine people. And I am not a Republican, and therefore think for myself, and derive my opinions from honest evaluation of sources I can access, and life experience that informs that...instead of doing what others tell me to do (aka talking points ad nauseum).
