Maggie Speaks

Most of us remember when Maggie spoke for the first time in season four of the "Simpsons." She said "daddy" as her father put her down to sleep fulfilling his wish to have a child who didn't call him "Homer." Well, now after 16 years of silence she has spoken once again, and this time in full sentence form!

Last night, Marge took Lisa to get a manicure and they told the stories of Queen Elizabeth, Snow White (kind of), Lady Macbeth (again, kind of), and the "Fountainhead." The latter was set in a nursery school, in which Maggie excelled at creative architecture but was held back by the dastardly hand of mediocrity. Never has Ayn Rand been cuter. Actually, never has Ayn Rand been cute.

Maggie was voiced by Jodie Foster who lent an air of gravitas to the tot. She was originally voiced by Elizabeth Taylor in 1992.

See highlights of Maggie's story line below and watch the full episode here.

South Park passed up the Simsons in Awesomeness 5 years ago, which is sad but true. the movie was barely a B-. the first 10 seasons was the best TV ever. right below Parker Lewis Can't Loose.

This doesn't even count. The clip above is from a fictional story within the Simpsons universe (told by Marge I bleieve). Maggie has spoken twice, once to say "mommy"or "Daddy " i can't rememnber, and the second to say "Sequel?".

It wasn't 16 years of silence. After the credits rolled for The Simpsons Movie, there's a brief scene which concludes with Maggie saying "Sequel?"

I totally agree. For me it started noticably slipping around 2003. It's totally sucked from 2005 on.

Jodie Foster as the voice for Maggie was a bad choice. But, what do I care. I haven't seen that show in years.

Some of these comments criticizing the current Simpsons are as ridiculous as the characters which the cartoon loves to ridicule. This was brilliant. Is the show as good as episodes years before? Probably some are and others are not. You should appreciate this for what it is: a staggering critique of teachers and schools that are scared to foster some students' creativity.

I appreciate it for what it says about 'The Fountainhead' and how ridiculous it looks set in a pre-school.

Wow, Maggie speaks... and she sounds just like Jodie Foster.

And here all along, I thought it was just a cartoon.

Man O man, this really hit home for me! I had two instances of people stepping in the way of creativity this week and a couple of weeks this happened: A 7-yr-old little boy ran up to me in my daughter's 2nd grade classroom to tell me he was writing a sequel to Star Wars. He's written something like 200 pages already. He described the new laser-light saber he's created with a secret switch-blade hidden in it. He was bursting with enthusium! He has a form of autism that makes it especially hard for him to socialize, so I was really pleased that he came to talk me! Afterward, I turned my back and heard the teacher take him aside and tell him he was not allowed to talk about weapons in school!

Wow, that is one sad story. Shame on that teacher for not realizing what was going on inside this little boy. :(

that is what you get with zero-tolerence policies. the teacher had no choice, it is all from the administrators.

The funny thing is, the teacher is a really good one. It definitely is the Administration, worried always about how things look, and keeping the children in line (and quiet) ... And here is a little boy who is very, very gifted -- who knows, he may save the world someday ... and all anyone can see are his differences or his "handicaps". I was thinking, it would be like Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel and someone saying, "Excuse me, but you're not holding that paint brush correctly." Sheesh.

And the administrators are afraid of law suits by the anti-science, book-burning, control-freaks of the religious right.

The Simpsons used to be so cutting edge, now they have taken the place that Bonanza had when I was a kid, you watched it because nothing else was on, and it was tradition.
