Pat Buchanan's Holocaust-Denial Enabling Ignored By NBC

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Pat Buchanan

On these pages today, Menachem Rosensaft, general counsel of the World Jewish Congress and adjunct professor of law at Cornell re-posts an article that previously ran in the New York Daily News, describing the extent to which Pat Buchanan is "enabling Holocaust deniers."

In a March 17, 1990, syndicated column, Buchanan wrote that it would have been impossible for Jews to die in the gas chambers of the Treblinka death camp, and referred to a "so-called Holocaust survivor syndrome," which he described as involving "group fantasies of martyrdom and heroics."

In another column, Rosensaft notes that Buchanan once likened convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk to Jesus Christ:

In his syndicated column of April 17, 2009, Buchanan not only called Demjanjuk "the sacrificial lamb whose blood washes away the stain of Germany's sins," but he wrote that the "spirit" behind the U.S. Justice Department's efforts to bring Demjanjuk to justice is "the same satanic brew of hate and revenge that drove another innocent Man up Calvary that first Good Friday 2,000 years ago."

Rosensaft also cites the presence of an ongoing discussion of the Holocaust on Buchanan.org, which is replete with both denialists ("I would like to see some rebuttal from Holocaust believers. Let's see some pictures of those gas chambers or those big cremation ovens. I'll tell you right now -- THEY DON'T EXIST. The same blinded people that believe that the Germans intentionally killed Jews -- also believe the myth of the Anne Frank Diary.") and, frankly, Nazi sympathizers ("Regarding Corrie ten Boom, the heroic Dutch Christian woman who risked her life to help Jews during World War II...People need to realize that what the Ten Booms did was engage in an illegal activity helping hide people and support the 'resistance movement.').

All of which leads to to this question:

Two years ago, Don Imus was unceremoniously dumped by MSNBC after making racially insensitive remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

Buchanan's sponsorship of a Holocaust denial forum is at least as offensive. Isn't it?

When I spoke to Rosensaft about the matter this morning, he made it clear that it was an issue of hypocrisy: "If these had been the comments of Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly, there's no doubt that MSNBC would have criticized them for it...Keith Olbermann would have made Buchanan the 'Worst Person in the World.'" I think that there's little doubt that this is true. Rosensaft added, "If this were about another nationality or ethnicity, it would be different. I can't imagine that Chris Matthews or Mike Barnicle would stay silent in the face of slurs directed at Irish-Americans, or Joe Scarborough at southern Americans, or Mika Brzezinski at Polish Catholics."

An excellent point! It's worth remembering that a week after Don Imus insulted the Rutgers Womens Basketball team by calling them "nappy-headed hos" Steve Capus of MSNBC took the extraordinary step of cutting ties with Imus and his show. Yet Buchanan's support for Holocaust denialism is ever-present, ongoing, and -- as his Demjanjuk piece indicates -- very strongly stated. Yet NBC has done diddly-poo in response. Perhaps they should!

Budokan said: "Not surprising the Republican party embraces him."

The Republican Party does not "embrace" Buchanan, Budokan. The Republican Party is as aggressively in support of Political Correctness over the Holocaust as are Democrats. To many in the Republican Party, Buchanan is an unwanted offspring.

FrancesP said: "He also needs to be deported to Germany like Demjanjuk. Germany, where Holocaust denying is a crime, will know how to deal with him."

Why should it be a crime to question certain aspects of history?

Whose interest does it serve to incarcerate people for simply asking questions and voicing their opinions?

No man should be imprisoned for simply stating their opinion on some aspect of history, and the fact that there are folks like you who believe they should makes me question the actual veracity of the "history" you are wanting to imprison people for challenging. In other words, if you have to jail people for challenging established history, that makes that "history" even more questionable.

BOin08 said: "We didn't win this election so idiots like him can say whatever they want!"

Obama having won the election is not a mandate to shred up the Constitution. Buchanan has the right to express whatever views he likes.

Also, let us be very, very clear on what happened over at Buchanan.org. There was dialogue between revisionists and anti-revisionists. This was not "Holocaust denial enabling", and Buchanan should not be demonized because some people have expressed their views on his forum.

There is no excuse for Pat Buchanon to be on any news channel as anything but a RW hater and nut job. Thats what he is.

Pat Buchanan is a despicable. When he jabbers on MSNBC, no matter what he jabbers on, I shut him off. I don't read his gibberish. His thoughts on Demjanjuk are horsepucky. He should be forbidden any forum. The problem: Don't confuse questions about Demjanjuk with Holocuast denial. Zeal to bring Nazis to justice can translate into injustice. Years ago I worked for DOJ/ INS; in the course of my job, I encountered a loathsome man, a perjurer. Subsequently, he was accused, much like Demjanjuk (he was not German), of being a vicious Holocaust Concentration Camp guard. I particpated in his prosecuation -- we had our man. Witnesses identifed him at trial; he was stripped of his citizenship, readied to be deported to Europe. Except he wasn't: New evidence emerged; the witnesses were proved wrong; the Federal Appeals Court overturned the case. Odious as this guy was, he wasn't a collaborater. Isreal already tried Demjanjuk and found the evidence vs him wanting. Just saying.

I will never understand how networks like MSNBC (and CNN in the past) give credibility to Pat Buchanan, a rabid Holocaust denier and antisemite. He also needs to be deported to Germany like Demjanjuk. Germany, where Holocaust denying is a crime, will know how to deal with him.

I don't like to watch Pat Buchanan on MSNBC, but they are accomodating a point of view, believe it or not, that is very popular with Conservatives around the Country. The extremism that all these people share are, in my opinion 'nazi sympathizers' who desire to control the World as Republicans do.

Why would they rather engage in pre-emptive wars, assassins, hate and fear mongering if they didn't. It is a form of extremism that was seen from Hitler, but also many other radical society's today. Skinheads=dittoheads, KKK resembles Conservative's views, Aryan nation=Republicans exclusiveness within their own party.

This extremism that Buchanan displays is political belief that they are 'exceptionalists' in the World they live in. Crazy I know but real. It is characterized by a rigid adherence to a set of belief's and a preparedness to use a wide range of tactics to achieve desired political goals. You have seen this with Obama's campaign, showing an almost arrogant 'irrelevency' to Obama, or his degrees and accomplishments.

They minimized him to take away their fear of his blackness. They cannot go outside their own race, sometimes religion, definitely politics in order to benefit from a Christian platform of inclusiveness, yet claim they are 'christian'. I do feel sorry for these people. I do beleive intelligent people are given the same 'code of ethics' that God inspired us to use, they chose not to, instead have their own holy wars with any excuse.

Pat Buchanan and his sister Bay (CNN), are and have always been BIGOTS & RACISTS! Write to Pat's bosses at MSNBC, and tell them to finally get rid of this guy, who destroys their network (along with the hateful Joe Scarborough!) We should not have to tolerate HATE, just to have Olbermann, Maddow, & Schultz!

Isn't MSNBC's CEO Jewish? Zuckman or Zuckerman.
Did you know Jewish owned Facebook recently allowed Holocaust denier's post?

Why don't you target the head of the snake instead of it's tail?

Pat Buchanan's last book about the "un-neccesary war with Hitler" says it all about his bigoted feelings about Jews, Poles, Brits, etc.

In his recent book, he shows no compassion for Jews, Poland, Britain and other countries resisting Hitler - while playing down the threat of Hitler.

According to Buchanan, "if only the Poles gave Germany part of Poland, THEN Hitler would not have invaded half of Europe". Buchanan arrogantly ignores the ultimate annihilation plans Hitler had for Jews, Poles and Russians that Hitler wrote in his book "Meinkempf", years before WWII.

Hitler was never happy with any territory given to him and would have eventually proceeded to destroy Jews and all Poles and Russians, who he considered to have "subhuman intelligence" since they were Slavic.

We have wondered for months why he is on NBC programs several times a day. He has the worst voice in media, hoarse, strident, loud; not to mention the content. He should have disappeared with Nixon [did he?] to avoid prosecution. Why do they keep bringing him out, like Gingrich, to rehash the same old hateful lies? Is it really about ratings?

they should have replaced him immediately with Tim Russert's boy. Now there is someone wirh character and class.

Pat Buchanan, and his ilk, should be mandated to spend a day at The Museum of Tolerance to face the undeniable evidence of the horror of the Holocaust.

Pat Buchanan is the RESIDENT RACIST MSNBC pundit, who they CHOOSE to keep on their "balanced" panel of blowhard know-it-alls. I turn the channel EVERYTIME his face appears.
I suggest that EVERYONE do the same and boycott this racist creep. MAYBE MSNBC will BAIL all of us out and get rid of him.

Pat Buchanan IS, indeed, the resident (blatantly) racists NBC "DC insider" media talk circuit. HOWEVER!
Condemning Buchanan's brand of racism calls into focus the DOUBLE STANDARD GIVEN to the NY & DC NeoCons.
By coincidence, from earlier this week, nominal "moderate" or even "LIBERAL" NY Times & WashPost columnists (respectively) TOM FRIEDMAN & RICHARD COHEN wrote
__defending Cheney's TORTURE gulags__,
...which is to say, spouting blatantly Right-Wing demagogues KARL ROVE & RUSH LIMBAUGH's talking points -
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/29/opinion/29friedman.html
http://consortiumnews.com/2009/051209.html

Michael Lind's book
"MADE IN TEXAS: George W. Bush & the SOUTHERN TAKEOVER of American Politics"
http://www.amazon.com/Made-Texas-Southern-Takeover-American/dp/0465041213
explains how the NeoConfederates
(unapologetic Southern autocratic authoritarians, of whom Helms, Thurmond, Lott, Frist, Barber, DeLay, Cheney & Bush are perfect examples) RULED AMERICA from the (stolen) Bush election of 2000.... and here is the critical part, ENABLED BY the Radical-Right Wing Jewish authoritarians... of whom Bush supporters SAM FAX, SHELDON ADELSON, 'Scooter" LIBBY, JOE LIEBERMAN, Paul Wolfowitz, RICHARD COHEN & TOM FRIEDMAN are PREFECT examples.

I for one am disgusted at American Jews with double-loyalties to israel who continually support the RADICAL RIGHT, DICTATORIAL TENDENCIES of the Cheney-Bush Neo-Confederates - including, of course, WHITEWASHING the ILLEGAL INVASION OF IRAQ (one MILLION Iraqis KILLED) & the BOTCHED occupation of Afghanistan (bin Laden ALLOWED to ESCAPE Tora Bora, & METASTASIZING in Pakistan.)

Racism & Genocidal bigotry, it would seem, all depends on whose ox is being gored.

More from April 17, 2009 column .........
If Friday's ruling is upheld, John Demjanjuk, who has been charged with no crime on German soil, is to be taken to Germany, home of the Third Reich, to be tried by Germans for his alleged role in a genocide planned and perpetrated by Germans. He is to serve as the sacrificial lamb whose blood washes away the stain of Germany's sins.

But if Germans wish to prosecute participants in the Holocaust, why not round up some old big-time Nazis, instead of a Ukrainian POW.
