Kate Gosselin: Being In Spotlight Is Tough

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Kate Gosselin, co-star of TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8," says it's difficult reading stories about herself.

Recent media reports have focused a harsh spotlight on Kate and her husband, Jon, who star with their eight children on the popular reality show. In recent days, the Gosselins' wholesome on-screen home life has been called into question by reports of extramarital affairs. Both Jon and Kate have denied those accusations.

"This is certainly not what I envisioned I was signing up for," Kate Gosselin said Wednesday during an appearance at the Frauenthal Center, The Muskegon Chronicle reported.

"When I see magazines in stores it's really difficult. It amazes me there is an industry that follows you around and writes stories about you.

"It destroys peoples' lives. I need you to know, don't believe what you read unless you hear it from that person."

On its Web site, Us Weekly recently described an over-friendly relationship between Gosselin and her married bodyguard, Steve Neild, that "caught the attention of her husband _ and has become the talk of many locals" in their Pennsylvania community.

People magazine's Web site quoted Gosselin as saying the couple have been struggling for months.

"This week I'm on the cover of four magazines. One is true, three are not," Kate told her audience.

The Gosselins are on the cover of People, Us Weekly, Star and National Enquirer. She described People's reporting as the most accurate.

She has previously denied having an affair with Neild. Jon Gosselin has denied cheating with a 23-year-old schoolteacher, and he has apologized for putting his family in an "awkward situation."

Kate Gosselin said the stop in Muskegon, located about 35 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, was the last on her travel schedule for a while. She said she plans to spend more time at home.

"The last couple weeks have been interesting," she said. "I had to address that."

TLC's most popular series, which has been on the air for four seasons, attracts an average audience of more than 2.8 million viewers.

The new, 40-week season premieres May 25 with an hourlong edition.

Gosh, I loved this show when it first came on. I was so curious how a family could manage all those children....it seemed harmless. After all, I love children and it was fun. But, as time went on, I noticed how consistently badly Kate treated Jon. She does a lot of belittling towards him. She seems to be neurotic about the kids getting dirty or playing with things that might get them a bit dirty. Then, all of a sudden - I became uncomfortable with being a voyeur into their lives. I felt like I shouldn't be watching t heir difficult relationship. But....it's kind of like a car accident. You feel horribly that it has happened, but, can't 'not look' as you drive by. Thus, I am writing about it here.

How will these children feel when they become teens and see themselves sitting on their potty chair when they were two? Will the children enjoy watching their parent's marriage fizzle on TV. I guess only time will tell.

I hope that they go to marriage counseling. Not every marriage can be saved (nor should they all be saved)....but, it would be beneficial to their children that their parents get along.

I wish them well - the whole family - that they can figure what BEST for them all.

Please folks, these kids are nothing more than the modern equivalent of the Dionne Quintuplets: with every moment videotaped for the cameras and shown pretty much 24/7 every where. The show went from being fairly sweet to this train wreck because the parents seem to be greedy. Did they really NEED a 1.1 MILLION mansion? $1,600/day bodyguard for the wife? Will these poor kids ever see a PENNY of the money their childhood's earned? Not to mention, if we're seeing the birth mother on every magazine and news show or out signing autographs, and the birth father is out drinking - who IS REALLY PARENTING THOSE KIDS? Paid help. Sad, sad, sad. ALL CHILDREN IN ENTERTAINMENT - whether scripted or not - need the SAME compensations across the board in all 50 states - as California enacted, along with a new version of "Coogan's Law" to protect their earnings. FREE THE GOSSELIN EIGHT!!!!

I think you might be the jealous one, but don't be blinded by the glare of Kate's new jewelry. Look past the mcmansion and fake tan her children's labor have provided, to how miserable her kids look being dragged around to film yesterday. This story is about child exploitation, which shouldn't be entertainment for the masses. Anyone with a conscience needs to boycott this show.

My wife has watched this show for quite sometime now and I said then, from the very beginning of their series, these parents were exploiting their children for their own gain...All of the trips this family has taken, the children will never remember because of their age...Well maybe the older twins...And now, just like her personality, she states "Its difficult being in the spotlight"...What a hipicrit ...As far as Jon goes, I knew back then it would be a matter of time when he would stray due to the fact how he gets belittled by Kate....GROW A SPINE JON !!!!

The first time I had even heard of these nonentities was when I saw them on the covers of magazines at the check-out line yesterday and wondered who the hell they were.

Fame. It's utterly meaningless now. And I realize my decision to avoid network TV four years ago was a wise one I need not amend. I'm totally out of touch with pop culture now and I'm very glad.
