LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which posted flat first-quarter earnings Thursday, will spend another summer marketing its wares to families who want to have fun even in hard times.

The world's largest retailer plans to stick with the "staycation" theme it adopted last year, when skyrocketing fuel and food prices kept people home. Now, it's unemployment instead of inflation that's leaving people looking for something to do around the house.

Groceries account for just about half of Wal-Mart's U.S. sales, and the company has picked up market share in the recession as shoppers focus on necessities.

But as food prices moderated and consumers found their dollars going farther, some sales have crossed into discretionary items, said Vice Chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright, who runs Wal-Mart's U.S. stores. New customers who have switched to Wal-Mart because of the economic climate are doing some of that buying.

"We're committed to retaining these new customers," Castro-Wright said in a recorded call for investors.

Wal-Mart is reconfiguring stores to have lower sight lines, making it easier for grocery customers to see general merchandise items they might want. The company has also held to its message of value and low prices, which Wal-Mart Chief Executive Mike Duke says is resonating with a broader customer base.

"Consumers are changing their thinking and behavior. It's a virtue to be thrifty," said Duke, who has completed his first quarter as CEO after taking over from Lee Scott.

Bentonville-based Wal-Mart still has challenges. The company, heavily reliant on its overseas operations, was hurt in the first quarter because of a strong dollar. Health care costs rose.

Wal-Mart shares fell 93 cents to close at $49.10 Thursday. But analysts said the company appears to be on solid footing.

While Wal-Mart says its extensive research gives it insight on broad consumer trends, executives opted not to offer details Thursday beyond saying the economic doldrums will continue for the coming months. That could play to Wal-Mart's strengths.

"You're liable to see a continuation of the 'staycation' theme that you saw last summer," said Executive Vice President and Treasurer Charles Holley. Wal-Mart focused then on families staying home, eating well, playing games and watching DVDs to have fun rather than going out to eat and to the movies.

Executives also said back-to-school promotions are expected to help second-quarter numbers. The company has seen greater returns from its seasonal promotions, which the new design brings to the front of the store.

But Wal-Mart expects overall second-quarter revenue to be hurt compared to last year, when shoppers were spending their government stimulus checks. The company expects to earn between 83 cents and 88 cents per share in its second quarter, a range that surrounds the analyst consensus of 85 cents per share.

Chief Financial Officer Tom Schoewe said the company expects exchange rates to be a challenge into the third quarter.

Wal-Mart said its first-quarter earnings of $3.02 billion, or 77 cents per share, were hurt by 4 cents per share because of currency effects. Revenue fell 0.6 percent to $93.47 billion, but would have risen 4.5 percent without the impact of the strong dollar. Nearly a quarter of Wal-Mart's sales _ 22.7 percent _ came from its international division.

The stronger dollar has been hurting many U.S.-based companies that have large overseas businesses. Most convert sales from other currencies into dollars to report their financial results. If the U.S. currency strengthens relative to others, the revenue translates into fewer dollars.

Analyst Todd Slater at Lazard Capital Markets said in a research note Thursday that he expects the foreign exchange pressure to peak in the second quarter.

Slater noted other possible risks for the company, including a further pullback in consumer spending, food price deflation and legislation that favors labor unions.

Holley said the company's health care costs as more employees signing up for benefits, which could be because spouses of Wal-Mart workers lost their jobs. Labor Department figures out Thursday showed jobless claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 637,000, from a revised 605,000 the previous week, above analysts' expectations of 610,000.

Holley noted that the improved health package that Wal-Mart now offers, after years of pressure from union-backed groups, could simply be more attractive.

He also said the company has a new scheduling system for back-of-the-house workers and better methods to keep track of what's in the stockroom. High inventory costs result when items that are hidden in the stockroom are reordered because no one could find them, Holley said.

It's ok WalMart... you'll bounce back!

The Government under the direction of Geithner & Summers and your friends in the Senate are working hard to hand you the spoils of Main Street .... real soon.. just hang on there.

Oh and dont worry about the next round of greeters when the current ones dies out...
Thanks to Wall Street and the Senators they own, plenty of people lost so much of their retirement investments they'll work any 3rd shift hours you offer them.

You just keep those lines to China open.

You been in a Walmart lately? Instead of going to Whole Foods the next time you shop go to Walmart. Think of it as an intel gathering mission.
What you'll see:
Long lines at checkout
Crowded parking lots.
Groceries at a significant discount. Not 5cents off on a box of cereal...50 cents.
Poor, working class and middle class people trying to stretch a buck.

There is nothing on this planet I need bad enough to buy it from WalMart.
A food sales rep told me that one day WalMart will be the only grocery chain.

Dont think so? look at the small town businesses that are gone now because of them. local hardware, camera shops, small office supply stores, local gardening centers.

This company ruins small towns. most of their employees qualify for Medicaid & 5% of that comes from the local purse.

If you look closer, you'll see that only the so-called "loss leaders" (cheap products sold at extreme discount) are priced this way. There have been plenty of studies showing that shoppers are led by these placements to believe that everything in the store is cheaper than in other stores; even though that is not true. In fact, we did a local product match, sku-to-sku, of thirty-five products; and we found that we could save a total of $6.00 by buying these from a local dollar store rather than at Walmart.

Correction: Food prices at Wal Mart have NOT moderated.
They're the same as they were last summer when petrol was $4 a gallon.

I guess the fact that Wal-mart chooses to throw away tons of deli food that hasn't sold by a pre-determined time rather than marking it down as they previously did, or perhaps taking the humane step of donating it to the needy or a charity that feeds the homeless is having a negligible effect....this is one company that I'd like to see fail.

Yea, it'll be fun to watch all those rich people who work there lose their jobs. All the rich people who shop there will have to find somewhere else to shop. It'll be great.

Wal-Mart finally destroyed the economic health of their own customer base.

chinamart price comparison.

i bought plastic shelving for the garage. i needed more shelving and bought the same shelving made by the same company in chinamart for a cheaper price. it turned out the shelving bought at chinamart was made of a thinner guage plastic. that's why they sold it for a cheaper price.

Heard the same about their toys. Same brand at another store was better made. Think the same is true with their computers too. Made to cheaper standards and quality. Makes sense.

First Walmart I ever walked into years back was nasty, the employees were nasty and the customers were nasty. Only real improvement I've seen is that the stores are cleaner. Only reason I go is because my father likes the place.

Try to keep him from going there anymore. Walmart can be dangerous to your health. In fact did'nt a coule kids die from the toys last year? I know I lost my kitten to poison cat food.

Fortunately it was only plastic shelving. I've repaired or attempted to repair four computers of others who were purchased at Walmart. Those computers model numbers, sold elsewhere, under major brands such as Dell & Emachine have different components and are warrantied longer.

Walmart is notorious for insisting manufacturers lessen the quality of a product so they can sell it for less. The public apparently turns a deaf ear to these claims and keeps buying there.

Plus thier stuff seems to be made to last about 90 days & now Walmart wo'nt take returns. I have a whole van load of broke walmart stuff they not 0only wo'nt take back, but they keep the bag & are downright militant about it.

I bought a cheap Wal-Mart toaster which was made in China. The toaster opening is not big enough for a regular slice of bread so you have to cut it in half to toast.

If your not satisfied with something you bought from walmart then take it back, they have a very liberal return policy.

Nope! Not anymore. I could'nt even take a bissel vaccume back, & a real bissel dealer would'nt take it back either. He said everything that came from Walmart was junk & not made the same. Not to mention the lead &, mercury & other toxins & poisons in them.

Even my friend's Christmas tree has a note at the bottom that said "Be sure to wash hands thoroughly".

Oh oh.

Time to renegotiate those Chinese sweatshop contracts.....A tip for the Walton's here too. (this is inside stuff)

Cut the Chinese labor force's ration to one half cup of Ramen. They lose weight but what the hell they're skinny as rails anyways!!!

Can you imagine an "American" company run by neo-con Republicans that gets almost 100% of it's labor from Communist freaking China?

America you deserve the nightmare of a good old fashioned depression. Because you are evil and slothful and lazy and criminal. No one did it to you but yourself America.

Have you seen a WalMart ad for a twelve dollar oil change? An elderly relative did but was unable to get the service manager to honor it. This is simple fraud; bait and switch. How will they retain their new found customers with this attitude?
