US First Lady Michelle Obama is not a "great beauty," but will "just get better with age," Iman, one of the first black supermodels, says in a magazine interview.
"Mrs Obama is not a great beauty," the Somali-born model and wife of rocker David Bowie tells Parade magazine's Sunday issue, reflecting on the first black US first lady, who is a lawyer by training and a former executive.

Michelle is beautiful but more importantly she is very intelligent...Iman is lacking in both virtues...

This is a non-story - if you read the full comments she is very respectful - she says Michelle is not a 'great beauty' which by current standards is true - she also says for great beauties, it only gets worse, but for Michelle it will continue to get better - quite a nice complement. I love my first lady, and my first family, but I have never thought of Michelle as a 'great beauty' - I think of her as inspiring and beautiful, intelligent and compassionate - a great person, a beautiful person, but not a 'great beauty'.
As I thought, Michelle Obama is a much better and secure woman than many would give her credit for:

that is the point - the fued is in the minds of the mindless - not in the minds of women like michelle or Iman - they are winners, not whiners.
Just because Michelle is the President's wife does not mean that she's automatically dubbed the queen of beauty.

If you think this is so irrelevant, than why are you commenting on it.
Nobody thinks that being a first lady means that you are necessarily beautiful. However, many of us think that Mrs. Obama is a very beatiful woman. We are entitled to our opinion just as you are entitled to yours.
I have yet to hear Iman insult a previous first ladies looks. I wonder why she chose to do so this time. Did she feel that she had the right to insult a black woman but not a white one? Interesting.
I have yet to hear iman insult THIS first lady..
This is not about whether Michelle is or isn't a "great beauty" but about the lack of tact and class displayed by Iman in making such a snide remark and, even worse, couching it as a backhanded compliment.
Iman is so insignificant in the fashion world etc that she ought to go back to her self-importance and stay there.
What was so attractive by what this pin head said? If she truly knows "beauty" she ought to watch her words too.
The issue isn't how beautiful Mrs. Obama is or isn't. She has a gift for making things seem good, possible , approachable, doable. Sometimes she's just radiant. And sometimes it's just nice to know a real woman is doing the job. There's no need to ever pick a person apart. Doing that reflects something about us. I like Mrs. Obama. I feel we.ve been rewarded by having her as our First Lady. She's engaging in all her endeavors. She likes being who she is..And she likes doing what she's trying to do for this country. LUCKY US !!!

I don't believe the various interpretations of Iman's comments are necessarily wrong - one's take would depend on whether you're a 'glass half full or half empty' type of individual. I agree with those who say she should have handled the question with more intelligence. I never took her to be a dimwit. Perhaps she was not at her best at that particular moment -- it happens. Her response was, however, stupid. Her elaboration was even more stupid. I do believe she was trying to be complimentary, but the outcome is horrendous.
I hope she shows better judgement next time and encourage her to come forward to clear the record and indeed her name if she was taken out of context.
Iman has been around and around and around. She rubs elbows with the elite. She's David Bowie's wife. She just may not have enough couth. She may also think herself important enough to be able to speak her mind. She may also be burnt out on the high life (ie drugs etc) to have a brain that functions properly. In any event for a women who supposedly has style this interview proves the opposite.
Mrs O is more attractive than Iman. I do not want a large fore-head nor do I want an endless neck. She should shut up about beauty as I am way more attractive than her (Iman) anyday. eyeroll.

So says a bald wire hanger with silicone breast implants, skin bleaching and witness protection style facial plastic surgery.
I don't know how dark you thought Iman was but she hasn't bleached her skin. However, implants and plastic surgery maybe. I highly doubt the plastic surgery but you're making up the bleaching. Iman has the same complexion.
Perhaps you are too young. When Iman exploded on the pages of international Vogue in 1976; she was the exotic Somali princess with very short hair. She was the new radiant beautiful model from Africa. Her skin tone was much darker then and the only make -up needed and available added some bright sheen to her eyelids and gloss for her lips. She was an inspiration for the wave of future ethnic beauties to come. Maybe she has stayed out of the sun to protect her skin. But when she was young she was gloriously beautiful with a much darker complexion.
Iman thinks of herself as beautiful, because she has a European feature, breast implant, and dyed her hair brown. Her external looks demonstrate her insecurity and low self esteem; probably, she is uneducated as well. Unlike Iman, Michelle Obama has a natural beauty and is proud of it, too. Regardless of what Ms. Iman thinks or says, our First Lady is Very Beautiful!

What European feature r u talking about? She has a straight nose that's it, and now she has European features. No European woman has high cheek bones, a large forehead and full lips. If one feature makes a blk woman European then Angelina Jolie and Scarlet Johanssen has African features.
Why do people seem to think that straight noses are "European features"? I wish people would become familiar with the diversity in African looks.
That is the mos ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Iman is gorgeous - Michelle Obama is not. Yeah, she's the first lady, but she isn't winning any beauty pageants or getting any modeling gigs.

SN365, you should reconsider your statement, because theres nothing European about Iman's features, its 'African'. Most people from east Africa and many other people throughout Africa have many different facial feature, shapes, body types etc. Notice that Africa is where all human life began, and so every geneotype is from there except yellow hair and pale skin.
With that aside, I think its best if Iman keeps her interior dialogues to herself.

Read the freakin' article. Iman was COMPLIMENTING Michelle, saying that her appeal was based on more than just her good looks. Calling her "interesting" and "bright".
Mrs. Obama is as beautiful as they come. Her personality, whit, education......icing on the cake. I am so proud to have her as my First Lady.
It never ceases to amaze me the people who will comment on an article when they haven't read past the headlines or the small quip H P provides.
In short... Iman is saying... beauty takes a back seat to brains.
Thank you. People are being tools, commenting on headlines. Which is what this new journalism seems to be about. Iman doesn't profess herself the ultimate beauty so there's no need for all this ugly behavior on here.
