Jon Huntsman: China Ambassador

DARLENE SUPERVILLE   05/16/09 11:53 PM ET   AP

Huntsman

WASHINGTON — With a reach across the political divide for Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman as ambassador to China, President Barack Obama may have sidelined for now a potentially formidable Republican moderate and possible White House challenger in 2012.

Yet Huntsman, who has upset the GOP's conservative base by supporting gay civil unions, may gain, too. The appointment, which requires Senate approval, gives him a chance to burnish his credentials and position himself as a viable presidential contender in 2016, if Obama appears to be a strong candidate for a second term in 2012.

John Weaver, a one-time senior strategist for John McCain's presidential campaign who now advises Huntsman, said the governor put country ahead of personal partisan interest. Huntsman was national co-chairman of McCain's failed bid against Obama.

"It's no more complicated than that, though it is so unusual in Washington everyone has to take a magnifying glass to it," Weaver said after Obama introduced Huntsman in the White House Diplomatic Reception Room.

"He was asked by the president to serve in a major diplomatic post, in a mission with a country most important to our economy, in dealing with Iran, Pakistan and North Korea. Jon is uniquely qualified and thus you don't turn your nation down," Weaver said.

Obama said he knew Huntsman's nomination "wouldn't be the easiest decision to explain to some members of his party." But Obama said Huntsman was "the kind of leader who always puts country ahead of party and is always willing to sacrifice on behalf of our nation."

Elected to his second term in November, Huntsman said he wasn't looking for a new job and didn't expect "to be called into action" by McCain's winning rival.

"But I grew up understanding that the most basic responsibility one has is service to country," he said, standing with Obama as his family looked on. "When the president of the United States asks you to step up and serve in a capacity like this, that to me is the end of the conversation and the beginning of the obligation to rise to the challenge."

Huntsman will be 56 in 2016, young enough to handle the rigors of a national political campaign. Republican strategists say serving as U.S. envoy to China _ which Obama says will be critical to solving many world problems _ will only improve Huntsman's reputation.

LaVarr Webb, a Republican strategist in Utah, said the appointment is a plus for Huntsman. He said Huntsman became a long shot for 2012 after his headline-making call for the GOP to moderate its tone if it wants to rebound from 2008 election losses.

"Clearly Gov. Huntsman does have major political ambitions and serving as ambassador to China certainly gives him foreign policy credentials," Webb said.

Eric Hyer, a China expert and political scientist at Brigham Young University, said the decision surprised him because no one seeks the presidency from an ambassador's post.

"So he might serve for four years and then come back and run for president. But can you run against the guy who hired you?" Hyer said.

Obama said he made the appointment "mindful of its extraordinary significance" and the breadth of issues at stake in U.S.-China relations, including the global economic crisis, the environment, public health, human rights and North Korea and Pakistan.

Huntsman, 49, is fluent in Mandarin Chinese from his days as a Mormon missionary in Taiwan. He previously served as U.S. ambassador to Singapore and as a deputy U.S. trade ambassador.

He made a name for himself in Utah by advocating a moderate agenda in one of the most conservative states. He drew the most attention for supporting civil unions, despite backing a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage that passed in 2004.

Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, has described Huntsman as a Republican who "seems to understand the party has to adjust _ not stubbornly believe that everything is OK and it is the country that has to change."

As ambassador, Huntsman could play a critical role in getting China to sign onto a new international agreement to curb the emissions blamed for global warming. The Obama administration has said it is willing to enter into a treaty, but that participation by China _ the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases _ could influence the success of any global pact and whether U.S. lawmakers will ratify the agreement.

As governor, he signed an initiative establishing a regional effort to reduce global warming. In a 2006 speech at Shanghai Normal University, Huntsman spoke of the need for China and the U.S. to collaborate on environmental issues.

Before becoming governor in 2005, Huntsman made millions as chairman and chief executive of his family business, Huntsman Corp., a global chemical manufacturer with more than 12,000 employees worldwide. Revenues last year exceeded $10 billion.

Huntsman and his wife, Mary Kaye, have seven children, including adopted daughters from China and India. He dropped out of high school to play in a rock band, and spends his spare time playing in a band and mountain biking. He also rides a motorcycle and is a fan of motocross.

Jeff Bader, Obama's senior adviser on Asia, knew Huntsman from when they both worked in the U.S. Trade Representative's office, and he contacted Huntsman about a month ago to discuss becoming ambassador to China, according to the White House.

Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, followed up two weeks ago. Obama made an offer on May 5, and Huntsman accepted. The two then met last Saturday in the Oval Office when Huntsman was in town for the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

Utah Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert, also a Republican, would become governor until a special election in 2010.

As long as he removes the hideous painting of W in the Ambassador's residence I think he will be a fine choice.

Speaking the language.

Chinese is not a difficult language to learn to speak, and it's not too difficult to learn to read, either. of course the Chinese will be flattered by someone who speaks "their language." But, what exactly is the language of China?

In Taiwan it is Guo Yu, in the peapoles Repulic it is Pu Tong Hua.

Then there is the transliteration. Oh, yea!

And, BTW, have you noticed that those Chinese who learned to speak English in Beijing can be understood better than those who learned in Taipei?

I can tell you that there are several different spoken languages in China. languages, NOT dialects. But because the writen language is NOT phonetic, everyone who speaks Chinese can read the writen language, even if they cannot understand the spoken language.

Then there is the whole argument of the original language. That would be claimed by those in canton, Hong Kong. Yue Hua. yep Thats right. They are the only speakers who can understand the Tang dynasty poetry.

Then the argument over which "dialect," er, excuse me, which language should be the national language. The Beijing pronunciation was chosen. Westerners, in their extreem ignorance call it Mandarin. OMG what an insult. (I am not going there, not gonna explain that one to you right now)

But the real language of China is the language of their culture, without which you will get no where.

Chinese is not a difficult language to learn to speak or read?

You sir, are deranged. I have a PhD, have lived in China for 10 years, and I cannot carry on an intelligent conversation with a 4th grader, or read a comic book.

The best way to learn Chinese is to become a Pentecostal Christian. At Azuzu Street in LA, most of the people who spoke in tongues at the birth of this movement suddenly spoke Mandarin Chinese. I tried that, but my experience was more like that of Borat when he attempted conversion.

About time - a US Ambassador sent to ANY country in the world should be able to speak the language of that country fluently - AND have a background on the history and culture of that country.

Too many things can happen in diplomatic positions in foreign countries - where accurate communication is essential - and if bias translation is present - who is to know......A translates to B - B translates to C - C translates to D - and ???????

Once more - an intelligent choice by Obama - I hope his faith in this man is justified in full!

Hey Brian, way to go there pardner, just throw the state under the bus; while I like Huntsman, your other views in no way reflect the majority of the state. I work in film production and have never heard of you or any of your work, and porno and home movies don't count. Best stick to what you know......when you find out what that is, let the rest of us know.

President Obama, I am sure that you know Republicans are bullies. They don't play nice. Anything that you do that is nice to them will not be reciprocated. Any act of kindness or fairness is interpreted by them to be a sign of weakness. Stop going out of your way to be bipartisan, it will not work, or heal wounds. They recruit and retain by preaching hate and intolerance. I view Huntsman as typical of their party. A religious zealot, who uses his wealth and influence not only for political gain but for financial gain. I also cannot help but question why someone who has the desire to adopt, does not feel led to help children in this country. to offer them stability and a way up. Not designer enough, I guess.
09:30 PM on 05/17/2009
Indeed. Long ago Kings used to marry daughters of rival Kings, for political and security reasons. Today, adoption fills that niche! Wait till those kids come of age, and explore their ethnic heritage.
09:44 PM on 05/17/2009
Yes, in the past Kings used marraige to seal peacem and security deals with rival Kings. Today adoption is used. Just wait till those kids come of age, and wantn to explore their cultural identity.

To understand what kind of politician Huntsman is, watch the clip, "Governor Jon Huntsman speaks about Sarah Palin." In that he calls Sarah Palin a "beacon of light" and an "American that represents every one of us."

Watch as he leads the crowd in chanting, "Sarah!, Sarah!, Sarah!"

I just think he's playing smart politics. His main platform was trying to heal the great political divide in this country, and any ideologue, whether right or left, could be threatened by that possibility.

If we leave theories and rhetoric to one side for the moment, however, then maybe, just maybe we can achieve some much needed reform in the country. Another important part of the president's platform is persistence - the country expected bipartisanship to happen overnight, and of course it did not. By the end of four years, though, I truly believe you will see a much more unified government, thanks to the continuing efforts of an amazing president.
05:31 PM on 05/17/2009
I completely agree with you. I think we should not allow one end of the spectrum be it right or left to hijack a political party. I am a proud Democrat but I am open to working with everyone. The President is an expert at the game of chaise. Remember David Plouffe said the only 2012 possible contender he fears is Jon Huntsman. Well, go figure.
Excellent work, Mr President.

Looks like Huntsman was actually one from the McCain camp that meant it when they tauted "Country First." The Chinese will embrace that we've sent someone who speaks their language and has done business with them. Two great attributes in these trying times. Let's hope he doesn't pull a Judd Gregg when the envangels start pushing the GOPosaurs to raise 7734 upside down.
10:04 PM on 05/17/2009
More likely this will be divisive in the Chinese leadership, and be seen as another "in your face" slap comong so soon after Geitners acusations that China was manipulating their currency for unfair advantage.

A good move from the president. And for more than one reason:

1. An important competitor for the Republican nomination out of the way, at least for 2012;
2. Placing an ambassador in China who speaks fluent Chinese is very important; it will do the relationship between the two countries a lot of good since speaking someone language is a form of respect (and to be fair, the US has not shown much respect for countries like China over the last couple of decades);
3. President Obama shows to the people of the US that he is looking for the right person for the job and that party affiliation comes second for him. A position fitted for a true leader who has the best interests of his country at heart.

Well done, Mr. President.

Brilliant, as usual. Unless the economy somehow heads south, and makes Obama look like a failure in that crucial area, he'll absolutely annihilate the Republicans in '12. If he's perceived as saving the economy by then, he'll be the most popular and unifying candidate since FDR at least, and he will drive far left Dems as far up the wall as far right Republicans. All the true believers of both sides have wanted to do since the 60s is HATE, HATE, HATE, and call each other "evil." Obama takes this key existential joy away from the hardcore Dem lefties, so naturally they are "hugely disappointed" in him already. But the vital center of the electorate, where every national election is won or lost, loves Obama's uniting the country and trying to tend DC gridlock.

Lincoln and the myth of 'Team of Rivals'
By Matthew Pinsker
November 18, 2008

President Lincoln's Cabinet was far more dysfunctional than Doris Kearns Goodwin's book would have us believe.

By December 1862, there was a full-blown Cabinet crisis.

Chase was the defiant rival. As Goodwin acknowledges, the Treasury chief never reconciled himself to Lincoln's victory, continuously angling to replace him. Lincoln put up with this aggravation until he secured renomination and then dumped his brilliant but arrogant subordinate because, in his words, their "mutual embarrassment" was no longer sustainable.

Only Seward endured throughout the Civil War. He and Lincoln did become friends, and he provided some valuable political advice, but the significance of his contributions as Lincoln's secretary of State have been challenged by many historians, and his repeated fights with other party leaders were always distracting.

Over the years, it has become easy to forget that hard edge and the once bad times that nearly destroyed a president. Lincoln's Cabinet was no team. His rivals proved to be uneven as subordinates. Some were capable despite their personal disloyalty, yet others were simply disastrous.

Lincoln was a political genius, but his model for Cabinet-building should stand more as a cautionary tale than as a leadership manual.

Team of Campaign Fund Raisers:

WHITE HOUSE – WSt Journal, “Obama Aims to Trim Party's Money Gap With GOP,” by John R. Emshwiller and Brody Mullins: “President Barack Obama is taking up a new role for Democratic Party: Fund-Raiser-in-Chief. This Sunday, following his commencement speech at Notre Dame, he headlines a $15,000-a-couple event in Indianapolis. Then comes a May 27 Beverly Hills gala -- at $30,400 a couple. That dinner, looking to draw a big entertainment-industry guest list, is expected to gross at least $3 million. The fund-raisers are part of a longer-term strategy by the Democratic National Committee to overcome its also-ran status to the Republican Party in the race for political donations. … This year, Republicans are again outpacing Democrats. First-quarter fund-raising reports show the Republican National Committee had $23.9 million in the bank at the end of March and no debt. The Democratic National Committee reported $9.8 million on hand and a debt of $6.7 million, which grew in the first quarter. Mr. Obama's headlining of the big-dollar events comes after a campaign when he promised to curb the influence of money in politics -- and then effectively crippled post-Watergate campaign-finance overhauls by opting out of the three-decade-old system of public financing. That allowed him to raise a record $750 million for his White House bid.” Free link http://tr.im/lvHo

OK, I thought this issue was over and done with. But obviously not.

What is wrong with NOT taking government money and raising your own? Could anyone explain that to me right now?

And after that historic fundraising effort - nearly a billion dollars - well, I'll bet that quite a few candidates opt out next go round.

AWESOME! I'm a Democrat from Utah and Jon Huntsman is one of a small handful of Republicans that "gets it". Another post mentioned Floridas Charlie Crist as well. If Republicans start looking toward honorable and intellegent men and women like these two gentlemen then the party has a chance. Huntsman is a man that truly put country first (like Obama) and our country would be a much better place if more Republicans were like him. We will miss Jon Huntsman here in Utah but we know he can do even more for America as Ambassador to China. BRAVO Barack and Jon!

No more Rush, Hannity and the party of "NO".
02:54 PM on 05/17/2009
Crist is so honorable and intelligent that he pulled a Larry Craig and married a woman with children to serve as a beard, to enhance his chances to be picked as McCain's running mate. He arranged for Florida to purchase Lehman products only weeks before its collapse, from Jeb Bush. He's done little to fulfill his campaign promises, but continues to campaign for another office. He is, when it comes to intelligence, at best, dull-average - multiple attempts to pass the bar exam. If elected to the US senate, however, he will complement the perpetually tan Boehner of the house.
