Did a TARP beneficiary accidentally speak the truth about the program to a reporter from the Telegraph? At first, the Daily Telegraph reported that Mark Patterson of MatlinPatterson, "a firm that invested in a Michigan bank with help from TARP," referred to the Troubled Asset Relief Program thusly:

"The taxpayers ought to know that we are in effect receiving a subsidy. They put in 40pc of the money but get little of the equity upside," said Mark Patterson, chairman of MatlinPatterson Advisers.

...

Mr Patterson said the US Treasury is out of its depth and seems to be trying to put off drastic action by pretending that the banking system is still viable.

"It's a sham. The banks are insolvent. The US government is trying to sedate the public because they are down to the last $100bn (£66bn) of the $700bn TARP funds. They think they're doing this for the greater good of society," he said, speaking at the Qatar Global Investment Forum.

That drew the attention of Joe Weisenthal of Clusterstock. But since then, the Telegraph has taken down the story! Weisenthal's on the case:

We're still trying to get to the bottom of this one... this morning we linked to an article in UK paper The Telegraph, written by the aggressive reporter Ambrose-Evans Pritchard, which claimed that TARP investor Mark Patterson called the program a "sham" and a ripoff to taxpayers, even though his own firm had taken advantage of the program.

Now the paper has taken the article down at the behest of Patterson's attorney, who claims the reporting was not factual. We went back and forth with the lawyer, who was a little evasive with the real story, though he sent us the following statement. Ok, so Patterson claims he didn't call the TARP a "sham". But what did he say? That's what we're trying to figure out.

Naturally, to get to the bottom of this, you've got to "pull a Blagojevich" and subpoena Rahm, obviously.

This Will Be The Best Season Of 24 Ever: Sarabeth of 1115.org revises the "ticking time bomb" scenario to account for new realities. Good luck selling this, Liz Cheney!

Towards a Bigger and Better Takeaway: Yglesias: "If you're working in the executive branch and you're saying to yourself "if we fully briefed all members of the intelligence committees of both houses of congress about what we're about to do, they'd leak it to the press and there'd be hell to pay" you have to ask yourself "is that because what we're doing is scandalous and illegal?" The idea that executive agencies can keep secrets from members who sit on the committees that oversee their activities makes a hash of the whole idea of oversight."

Today's Briefing Room MVP: Is this guy! Whoever he is, he expertly brought Jon Stewart's satire into the briefing room, asking Gibbs how President Obama could withhold detention photos, citing the safety of Americans, whilst refusing to champion the cause of a translator discharged from his duty on the basis of being openly gay.

Nice work! If anyone can help us put a name to his face, please email us! [UPDATE: Hey! It's Tommy Christopher! I follow Christopher on Twitter and he's great. But we've never had the chance to meet in real life, so I didn't recognize! Sorry about that!]

Perhaps to some extent, all press secretaries are human punching bags anyway....its part of their job description.

However, now that the floor is open to comments on gifts.....Remember to put a nice bow on Steele, LImbaugh, Hannity, OReilly, Palin, all the secessionists and tea leavers. We can go on and on if you like....the rebumblican members of the House and Senate. including M Bachman......How about Clarence Thomas? We are talking about multi purpose, self propogating, eternally funny gifts of comedy, Belly laughs the size of Solar Systems. Funnies that make a laugh riot look like a furtive snicker. As for your pathetic example of Gibbs, I'll have to insist that you take your things to the back of the room and see me after class...Comedy Class! Hahahahahahaha!!

1. I think it was wrong to give the banks and wall street anything we have enough banks to make up for the ones that would have folded it happen with the S@L and it will happen again with greed.
2. I am a straight guy that served in the navy for 20 years and knew people in the navy that was gay. I have no problem with gay men or women serving in the military, they are Americans to.

Talk about a short attention span. A guy dealing closely with TARP spills that the banks are insolvent, the SEC is way over his head, and their intentionally manipulating the masses by convincing them everything is fine, and 90% of the posts on here are about DADT???

Pay attention America!

6 trillion in toxic assets delt again and again thru all the markets as bundled derivitives with toxic insurance bundles as well and all AAA rated, gets you someplace north of around 65 TRILLION in bad deals done the world over, and affecting every single institution or invester either directly or otherwise.
That is MORE than the whole world produces in a year.

They want to preserve the for profit way of life that allows the rich to steal from workers.
So they support the system with "transparent" taxpayer investments.
All this is to buy the time so that eventually home values will stabilise and in fact start to rise.
Because those values are at the heart of the toxic assets.

Once that happenes then they will begin to reform and reconfigure the financial industry and the regulations and laws and enforcment mechanisms.

Then the rape of the worker can continue along it's very merry way, without real Health Care reform or anything else that might infringe on the elite power structure.
How far can a Nation born in, and supported by, Slavery for 400 years change anyway?

Y'all know Da Man be 1/2 white and edumacated by the most elite of all the WASP institutions?
Watcha 'spect?
Change or sumpin?

Good points. But the situation goes directly to the control mechanism that control the government, operate behind-the-scenes, has complete allied corporate media protection and controls the heads of both parties so that it does not matter who wins an election.

The Council on Foreign Relations handed Obama 300 names, from their 3000 membership base, for appointment across the administration. The CFR is controlled, funded and organized by David Rockefeller, chairman emeritus. CFR is interlocked with the more powerful 135 international member Bilderberg Group which is the controlling power behind all G20 governments and the rise of the transnational corporate state.

Here is an example of the chief presidential recruiter for the Bilderbergs, Vernon Jordon, commencing the rise of Obama: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-stevens/barack-obama-the-man-i-k_b_84866.html .

Look here at the power of the annual secret Bilderberg meeting, held last June in Virginia: http://illegalprotest.com/2008/06/08/list-of-bilderberg-2008-attendees-globalists-exposed/ . Note the U.S. attendee's which included Paulsen, Geithner, Summers, Bernanke and Rockefeller. Note also the media that attended and nary a word written about this powerful meeting.

If many banks, or many of our large banks, are indeed insolvent, this is a top story. W are essentially draining the treausry for dubious results. The entrie appraoch has been questioned in philosophical and idealogical terms. Its cost has been questioned even if it would work. If we are giving the banks money for nothing and not getting our equity voice, common practice in the US and everywhere else until now, then drainng our treasury is absurd.

We are bankrupting the country. This is like Japan's foolish approach, but even worse ! We are making the perpretrators whole while destroying the country and getting nothing in return.

Just a word of advice to the Dems here: choose wisely and fight like hell to get the "good" stuff changed while you still have a majority in Congress, my suggestions:

1. Obviously, get DADT changed.
2. Prosecution of Bush admin for torture/deceiving the public.
3. Marijuana legalization. (state by state)
4. Gay marriage (of course, that's state by state as well.)
5. Prison reform ala Jim Webb.
6. Ending aid to countries that don't need it and who use it illegally and unethically (i.e. Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt.)

I'm not a Dem, but I did vote for Obama--more as a lesser of two evils thing. I think it's apparent that in order to get him to keep his promises and to act on things that are the will of the people, we're going to have to push him hard to make it happen through our Congress and Senate.

He'll only be as good of a president as we push him to be.

ebanks:

He can end ENFORCEMENT of DADT with the stroke of a pen -a s well as reinstate anyone 'fired' because of it.

The fullness of his plate is irrelevant to the issue. It takes 5 minutes to draft an Executive Order and sign it.

I appreciate the vote of confidence on my points ebanks, but my overarching point is that *WE* have to do it, *WE* have to push for it.

No more sitting back and "hoping" that Obama will address these things. All these matters that I listed are either infringing on citizens liberties/livelihood or outright causing the deaths and suffering of innocent people. I'm not going to "hope" we get change for the better, I'm actively pursuing it.

The economy is causing the plate to overflow by itself, yet he can add healthcare and energy to that? He won't release those photos, but he can't sign off on holding up the firing of a qualified soldier whose talent would help with National Security?

Time to stop making excuses!

"will of the people"

This is an interesting problem in and of itself. The people are ill informed, and plainly wrong on so many issues....see above for possible examples.

So, what is the answer? In a word, the answer is hard work on the part of the populace, as well as an administration which is willing to take the time and make the effort to explain the issues. Combine lazy citizens with a lazy government, as in the past eight years, most notably, and you get what we have today, chaos. As it stands, the people of this country don't know what they want, see the Rebublican Party, no taxes. secession from the union, tea parties.

As far as pushing Obama...I have a feeling this is what he seeks. To state it in more positive terms, however, I think the president wants strong support from the people on these issues. He's not going to take us all down a hopeless path, tilting at windmills. I'm pretty sure he wouldnt oppose a true grass (heh) roots effort to legalize the herb, but at the same time, its foolish to think he'll go outfront on the question without the full support of the people. He has to pick his battles. This is a no brainer.

I'm an American, and I do wonder what in the world is the point here? We have military personel who are adamant about speaking on their sexual orientation? But, also we have military personel who need to know what is the sexual orientation of other military staff? Why is this important, who cares? How often is one asked his sexual orientation in a civilian interview? Is it asked when applying for police or firefighter positions?

It's prejudicial and discriminatory and the president should use every tool in the box to bring it to an end. The fact that he doesn't, speaks volumes about his truthfulness and where DADT falls on his list of priorities. Obama said he would end it immediately, well he can do that with the stroke of a pen. Come Mr President it's about and human rights, it's really not that hard to understand.

How to make gays in the military "lasting and durable," sounds like a tough assignment to me. I would hope that when it is all "lasting and durable," that it simply means that homosexuals will be treated the same as heterosexuals in the armed forces. However, I do not trust Congress to deliver that into law. When this administration goes out for another campaign and Congress has not passed the law, they will have an easy out. They tried to get something passed but Congress won't pass a law. Meanwhile four years will have gone by, countless others discharged for no good reason and their lives continue. One simple, easily written executive order could stop it right now. What is the reason for not doing the executive order bit? Obama promised that Congress would be involved in legislation regarding stem cell research and gave a non durable, non lasting executive order to get funding going again. Then Mr. President give us some non durable, non lasting executive order. Show us what you are made of!
