Newsweek:

The Obama Administration is pressing the Libyan government to explain the reported prison death of a former CIA detainee--an incident that U.S. officials fear could reopen questions about the agency's "extraordinary rendition" program and further complicate the president's plans to shut down the Guantánamo Bay detention center.

Before Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated, she said that Osama bin Laden had been murdered. Yet amazingly he still sends out videos.

bin laden's son's says the videos are faked. that they are not his father.

I remember seeing a video of an Osama with a beard that had gotten darker. Yet the newscaster, said that perhaps Osama had gotten vain. Does that really make any sense. A man who supposedly lives in a cave, suddenly worries about how dark his beard is. I guess he wanted to be the babe magnet.

"Rendition".

It used to mean:

1. The act of rendering.
2. An interpretation of a musical score or a dramatic piece.
3. A performance of a musical or dramatic work.
4. A translation, often interpretive.
5. A surrender.

Now it means shipping some poor soul to a country where he or she will have their fingers broken, their skin burned with cigarettes, their heads slammed into a wall - excuse me - a "false wall" - or their faces held under water until they choke.

What a wonderful addition our government has made to the Orwellian lexicon.

And lest we forget - renditioning them to black sites in Uzbekistan, a country where they literally boil the opposition.

We continue to train the intelligence forces of others countries to do in their country what we are not allowed to do in our country.
Somehow, we are allowed to train them in illegal acts...in our country....at Fort Benning, Georgia.

"The Obama Administration is pressing the Libyan government to explain the reported prison death of a former CIA detainee... "

"Al-Libi also had been identified recently by U.S. defense lawyers as a possible key witness in upcoming trials of top terror suspects."

Do you think for one second that you would have ever read:

"The BUSH Administration is pressing the Libyan government to explain the reported prison death of a former CIA detainee... "

OR

"The MCCAIN Administration is pressing the Libyan government to explain the reported prison death of a former CIA detainee... "

Radical progressive web sites still are investigating & criticizing the USA's use of extraordinary renditions when W as POTUS. The MSM hasn't been interested in rendition of prisoners, aka illegal combatants, for a while.

Agreed. Why not?
Is it because they are complicit? They used and hired Generals put in by the Pentagan (as experts) to ,well,,, Lie about stuff like... how we had to go to war and to stay in Iraq. They, the generals made billions of dollars money off no-bid contracts for thiemselves and buddies. The MSM is still covering up its own crimminality and that of their bosses in government.

Most such suicides are murder by design. It does not matter who drives it But it is the logical outcome of the aberration and insanity that posses the collective that desires power in the name of identity and that of all fundamentalist notions of existence.
It is the irrational desire to do away with the reality that poses questions, and the criminals across the power chain see to that these questions are eliminated from the public consciousness by one way or another as the saying goes" the public memory is short lived” but the loss of humanity and that of dear one’s is not, so the questions come back time and again, morphed as a reality check.
No matter what most renditions are events of tragic and mistaken identity, driven largely by the desire to exploit and subvert the "torture structure" that is all ready there in the first place for private and personal gains.
With growing instances of such horrific events and our knowledge of such would only add to the bleak future that is increasingly threatening to consume us all in to a perpetual war with what ever excuse at hand.
As long as we as humanity fail to uphold basic human values these events and those who want to exploit and profit by such are going to come back time and again.

The "events of tragic and mistaken identity" are irrelevant to the CIA and Chenney. The results of torture is the same - a false confession!

I would not expect that to happen. The Muslims bury their dead quickly, and the article says that his body was turned over to family. I don't know how they feel about exhumation but would doubt that we will ever know the real cause of death.

All too convenient, just as it's about to hit the proverbial fan here in the US! He could have been an incredible witness for the "torture trials"!

"So when I made the decision to release these memos and when I made the decision to bar these practices, this was based on consultation with my entire national security team, and based on my understanding that ultimately I will be judged as commander-in-chief on how safe I'm keeping the American people."

The conclusion that Pres. Obama would authorize the use of torture if someone convinced him to is erroneous. What is it about "I made the decision to bar these practices" don't they get?

And to add, the emphasis was on the fact that he would be judged on HOW he kept the American people safe. In other words, the ends do not justify the means.

Sorry, I misread his statement about "how".

See the part about short-cuts that undermine who we are.
