The decline and fall of the Republican Party in recent years has been so widespread that the party has lost support among nearly every major demographic subgroup of likely voters across the country, according to a new Gallup poll.

The party lost support among a broad swath of Americans, from conservative to liberal, low-income to high-income, married to unmarried, and elderly to young.

The only subgroup in which the party saw a slight increase in support from 2001 to 2009 was frequent churchgoers.

The biggest declines, of roughly 10 percent, occurred among the college-educated, 18 to 29-year-olds, and Midwestern voters.

The turning point was 2005, after Hurricane Katrina and Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, when the party's support really started to free-fall, according to Gallup: "By the end of 2008, the party had its worst positioning against the Democrats in nearly two decades."

The GOP is going the way of the Whigs and the Free Soil Party.

I'm sure the reason why GOP numbers have increased among frequent churchgoers is because, overall, the number of frequent churchgoers is decreasing, and it isn't the Republican parishioners who are leaving the congregation.

It's interesting that the biggest decline is in the segment of those with college educations. I wonder if the neo-cons see the link btwn education and their lack of appeal? I guess the more education one gets, the less one would identify with the ideals of the GOP.

Go figure!

It is apparent that churchgoes are fed GOP propaganda and have been since 2000. The church is therefore in apostacy ( listening to worldly propaganda) and that is why so many people have decided to stay away from church or to have home church. Only the truly gullible are left in the GOP and the church. They will both go down together!

GOP aren't the only ones with propaganda. Have you seen the latest Democratic web video mud-slinging?

Here's the official DNC video.

No no, they have kept us safe since 911.... Right? wrong. 911 was on their watch. They continue to use the we kept you safe after 911 talking point. But it was Bush and the Republicans that did not want to investingate 911 for 441 days. Then they formed the 911 ommission team. A tainted political investigation that did not want to find real facts. Now we have a media blackout about real inconsistencies of the official story. I really don't think we want real answers for what happened that day. Maybe we can't handle the truth, but I am tired of hearing Republicans play the we kept you safe card.

Things really need to change in the next four years or government may just lose the support of all the people.

After the unspeakable horrors that they have inflicted on this country for many decades, witnessing the despicable GOP finally implode is truly PRICELESS!

I work with a lady that left the republican party after hearing all of the fuss over mustard. She preferred not to be in a party that marginalize themselves instead of sticking with the real issues. Who cares about teleprompters and mustard. They are too stupid to realized that people are turned off by the pettiness.

If she was in the RP until the mustard incident, what real issues was she supporting?

The imminent threat of socialism?

The incalculable threat to our society of gay divorce?

The poor getting a fair shake?

The RP ceased to be rational long ago.

It became obvious except to the oblivious during Former President Pan's Administration.

Folks have been waving their flags with one hand and thumping their bibles with the other while the Gopers have been picking their pockets. Some of them have figgered out they've been conned.

Because they're gaining Republicans. To go to the Democratic party would be to admit a mistake. And no Republican (ex or otherwise) will ever do that.

Another aspect of why Americans are rejecting the GOP and neo-fascism is it's tendency to marginalize the debate over the role of government. Down this string a ways are several trolls who are engaging in the "nanny state" argument...that is, if the government is involved with our lives, then we are being coddled, or weakened. Here's a typical quote:

"When the state gives all, the infantilization of society is sure to follow...."

Really? And what specific example exists to prove this inane point? Are you back to the Ronald Reagan "welfare queen" myth? Anyone with a grain of common sense knows large, complex countries operate via a balance between social and private interests. It's typical for conservatives to reduce everything to all-or-nothing thinking.

In fact, I can make a case that the attempts of the conservative movement to control basic aspects of our lives: fertility rights, homosexuality, a tendency to push Christianity, drinking, drug use, the list goes on, is more emblematic of a "nanny" state than any progressive agenda.

Please, conservatives, continue to comment on this thread. You're showing your true colors, and they aren't very pretty.

Why do you couch all anti conservative arguments in social terms? Many of us do not give a flip what you do in your bedroom, or with what/who, or put in your body, we only care that free people who were once willing to give their lives for liberty can be persuaded very quickly to relinquish their liberties for a quiet life, its mind and soul numbing!!!

"For inspiration, why not look to Canada? Long derided by American conservatives as "socialist" and praised by the left for its generous government spending, Canada is casting off those stereotypes. Over the past few years, while U.S. politicians presided over huge increases in spending and debt, the Canadian government tightened its belt, slashed tax rates and balanced budgets."

Well, believe it or not, you conservatives live in a society (social terms?). American conservatives are all about using social arguments to divide and conquer: gay marriage, abortion, guns, drugs.....We live with "the war on this or the war on that." This is all conservative language.

"we only care that free people who were once willing to give their lives for liberty can be persuaded very quickly to relinquish their liberties for a quiet life, its mind and soul numbing!!!"..........forgive me, but I have no idea what you're trying to say here......
