WASHINGTON — Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, one of President Barack Obama's candidates for the Supreme Court, will be at the White House on Tuesday for an event about the auto industry. That is the "primary" purpose of her visit, anyway, as the White House put it.

Granholm will be on hand when Obama is expected to announce new auto fuel efficiency standards, a matter vital to the auto industry that helps define the economy in her own state. An administration official spoke on condition of anonymity about the event because it had not been announced.

It is not clear whether Granholm also will meet with Obama about the upcoming vacancy on the court; Justice David Souter is retiring this summer.

The president plans to conduct interviews before announcing a nominee but has not yet done any, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday.

Asked whether Granholm and Obama would be discussing the Supreme Court, Gibbs said: "I think the governor's primary objective in coming is an announcement we'll make tomorrow on a different topic."

When asked whether a secondary purpose was a court interview, Gibbs was coy: "I feel good about my first answer."

Granholm is among more than six people Obama is considering for the seat.

The 50-year-old Democratic governor is a former federal prosecutor and Michigan attorney general.

I really want a women to be chosen, but sorry "Not A White Women", that is not true diversity, another white women is just another white person, what we need is diversity that represent not only race and ethnicity but experiences of modern America,

How does putting a white women on the bench diversity? It is not!

Can she relate to the struggles and perspectives of people of color in this country, "NO" she cant!

Sorry, but what we need is a person of color on the bench and if it's a women even better!

To nominate another white person even if it's a women, along with the other 8 white judges already on the bench and call it "diversity" is INSANE.

Yeah, I'd love to see her gone, but I'd hate to see her anywhere near the SCOTUS.

How about we split the difference and have her sod off and not get a place on the SCOTUS.

I think that would be acceptable to most ;)

"Those who disapprove of tax competition complain that lower state taxes only create a zero-sum competition where states "race to the bottom" and cut services to the poor as taxes fall to zero. They say that tax cutting inevitably means lower quality schools and police protection as lower tax rates mean starvation of public services.

They're wrong, and New Hampshire is our favorite illustration. The Live Free or Die State has no income or sales tax, yet it has high-quality schools and excellent public services. Students in New Hampshire public schools achieve the fourth-highest test scores in the nation -- even though the state spends about $1,000 a year less per resident on state and local government than the average state and, incredibly, $5,000 less per person than New York. "

So quality education doesn't depend on big spending nor on high taxes.

What does Jennifer Granholm know? ANYTHING?

According to the Detroit Free Press Granholm went to The White House to discuss emission standards.

"Finally, there is the issue of whether high-income people move away from states that have high income-tax rates. Examining IRS tax return data by state, E.J. McMahon, a fiscal expert at the Manhattan Institute, measured the impact of large income-tax rate increases on the rich ($200,000 income or more) in Connecticut, which raised its tax rate in 2003 to 5% from 4.5%; in New Jersey, which raised its rate in 2004 to 8.97% from 6.35%; and in New York, which raised its tax rate in 2003 to 7.7% from 6.85%. Over the period 2002-2005, in each of these states the "soak the rich" tax hike was followed by a significant reduction in the number of rich people paying taxes in these states relative to the national average. Amazingly, these three states ranked 46th, 49th and 50th among all states in the percentage increase in wealthy tax filers in the years after they tried to soak the rich."

That may be true, but unlike the people in New Hampshire most of the rest of us prefer paved roads and sewage service.

A major source of financing for Michigan schools comes from property taxes.

One needs only a brief drive around Detroit to realize this type of funding cannot support a decent school system.

Well Your example of New Hampshire as a tax haven is pretty interesting. First, not all the schools are in good shape. Many schools still do not have all day KINDERGARTEN. Imagine this in the 21st century. Property taxes there are outrageous and there are may people leaving that state as well as in Connecticut. The problem with your tax comparison is you are comparing apples and oranges. Connecticut is a small state, but its population is among the most educated in the nation, per US New. 28% of people who live in CT have a bachelor of arts. Thus, people are leaving to find jobs.

Now, I don't like to pay taxes just as much as everyone else. But there is an old saying out there "you get what you pay for." To some extent that saying is true. For years republicans have said that we don't need to put more money in the school system we just need to demand more. What is wrong with this sentence? Much. No child left behind is the greatest example of a good idea gone bad. If you want improvement, you have to pay for it.

She isnt a serious court candidate. Obama has a big agenda, but picking a Supreme court justice wasnt something on the top ten list. He's going to pick someone very safe, moderate and non-controversial.

I live in Michigan and I would definitely support Jennifer Granholm for the U.S. Supreme Court. Our last governor, the current head of a lobby group for business interests, sold us out, moved on and left a giant mess for Granholm to clean up. She has been thoughtful, pragmatic and worked her butt off. Maybe Obama will get this one right. Best of luck to her.

You're kidding right? Michigan is worse off than it's been in a long time. I wouldn't call that solving all our problems...

The "Google" portrays a much different story. I, for one, have been hugely impressed with the Michigan ads seeking new businesses. I have liked her on the campaign trail. I understand she was a great Attorney General as well. I suspect we are seeing the view of her from the Right and Left. The Right is going to be negative. Go figure.

I would support her 100% for supreme court! Id love to see her run for President, except I think she was born in Canada, so thats a non starter.

Speaking of born elsewhere, I know there are still some radical rethugs who are pushing Obama not a US born citizen, but from what I understand, even if he was born elsewhere, he is as much a US citizen as John McCain is. McCain was born in Panama while his father was stationed there. And, US immigration laws does not guarantee someone born on a military base US citizenship. But having at least one parent being a US citizen does. Obamas mother was a US citizen, so that means no matter where he was born , he is still a US citizen. But morons will not look at the law, just the hysteria in their contorted minds.

Governor Granholm would be a brilliant choice for the Supreme Court. It is regrettable she was born outside of the US because she would be a strong candidate for US President. She is highly intelligent. and a hard worker having graduated UC-Berkely with a Phi Beta Kappa and two degrees. She won high honors at Harvard Law, served as an Assistant US Attorney and Attorney General of Michigan before being elected Governor.

As Governor of Michigan she has administered a state bankrupted by her high spending predecessors. Her approach to this has been to put spending choices in front of voters and state legislators to insure public participation in very tough choices.

It is true that her mostly Republican predecessors (since 1961, Republicans ran the Governor's office for 32 years, Democrats for 16 years) allowed our state to become overdependent on one industry. Since taking office, state employees have been cutback by roughly 30%, but the Republican -controlled Senate has blocked any increases in the state income tax, prolonging Michigan's state government crisis.

I wish our country had 49 more governors as qualified as Jennifer Granholm. If she doesn't answer the call to the Supreme Court, I certainly hope she will run in the future as our US Senator.

Id love to see a debate between Granholm and Palin. I think Palin would lose it within the first 5 minutes and start regurgitation boiler plate republican talking points only . Palin is a regurgitator, Granholm has a brain and can use it very well.

Granholm is a pea brain she has single handedly run the state of michigan into the ground. Her small business tax is forcing business owners to leave her state. states like indiana love her because they are hiring alot of the people who are leaving

Updating some research from Richard Vedder of Ohio University, we found that from 1998 to 2007, more than 1,100 people every day including Sundays and holidays moved from the nine highest income-tax states such as California, New Jersey, New York and Ohio and relocated mostly to the nine tax-haven states with no income tax, including Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire and Texas. We also found that over these same years the no-income tax states created 89% more jobs and had 32% faster personal income growth than their high-tax counterparts.

Last I checked, Florida and Nevada were really suffering in this recession. I don't know about New Hampshire. But, yes, we're doing pretty well in Texas, thus far.
