FILE - In this April 1, 2009 file photo, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin attends the Gen Art film festival premiere of "Lymelife" in New York. Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla is threatening to give Baldwin a beating if he ever dares set foot in the country after the star made a joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride on Monday, May 18, 2009. (AP Photo/Peter Kramer, File)

MANILA, Philippines — Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the "30 Rock" star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on "The Late Show" with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

Baldwin has been involved in a bitter dispute with his ex-wife, Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger, over custody of their 13-year-old daughter, Ireland.

Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

Just to remind you, forum trolling is the way Filipino imagine themselves conquering the world.

Intellectual people also know what an insult is or what a good joke is, because a human trafficking joke, especially specifying it to a group of people is not considered a funny one.

Whatever kind of remarks you uttered is your own accountability.
To say you are sorry or declare your apology is an act of honour and later in your life you will receive respect from people instead of disgust.

Check the true to life movie -TRADE (2007). The victims, yes the victims are mostly from the poorer countries of Latin America, Asia and even Europe. Human trafficking or the issue of Modern Slavery is NOT a joke and must not be a joke. Women and children are mostly the victims here not to mention that IN THIS country-USA, human trafficking is already an industry. And consider those numbers of missing children nationwide in USA, who knows where they are now. Are you aware of that? So watch out for your children, you do not know what might happen to them.

Whatever Jack1,Are you telling us you're here in the US? Now that's hypocrisy. Besides, what is the ratio of "intellectual" people to uneducated people in your country.

Flap your gum all you want, but "intellectual people" in your country with access to the internet are as rare as a dry spot in the ocean. Besides your grammar does not reflect an
"intellectual" person but a trying hard English speaker.

Run your mouth all you want about Filipino pride, besides every nation in the world already knew that Internet Trolling is the closest your country will ever get to world domination.

I think the comment was seriously wrong when you consider that Alec could have said he may need to Fedex a bride. I'm betting Fedex would have slipped him a twenty for that plug.

I have nothing against Mr Baldwin joked about The mail order bride.,it was only a ""JOKE"" that the Philippine government officials sensationalize it nationwide, Is it because Elections in the Philippines is coming soon? I know it embarrassed for the Filipino women and a big slapped to the Philippines , But why its only now the Philippines government concentrate the ''Joked"" why not before? as a matter of fact Mail order bride runs more than 20 years ago, and Philippine didn't do anything to stop it? why now? A joked is nothing when compare the country situation, Joke isn't deserve an attentions theres a lot of Problems the government should focus, like poverty, Minor & Adult Prostitutions, crimes and Corruptions. We are simply filipino people we are not affecting the ""Joked"", we are more affecting and concern about Philippines government officials. and their mistresses, Corruptions,........ Thanks for Mr Baldwin and his JOKE'' I wish our government is true with their concern about pilipino women ....!!!!!!!!...

Indeed, it wasn't 'safe' to put a country's name in from of 'mail-order-bride' but the BUTT of the joke is really on white American/Euros who actually do that sort of thing.....He's a Baldwin people! With his name alone, he can get a hottie in an instant if he wanted to - doesn't work the same for Stephen though.

Also, Huffsters, don't be surprised a filipinos took offense to this. No need to act shocked. The whole world doesn't have the same humor as Americans...heck, not all Americans have the same humor.

Can we move on people?

Have a good day!

By the time the U.S. mail delivers your bride, Alec, you'll be too old to fornicate.
(now will we hear from irate postal workers?)

Alec, geez. Why did you have to put a country before the words "mail-order-bride"?? Don't you think you would have done well with an "American-Mail-Order-Bride"?? There are enough eligible, beautiful, young, healthy American girls willing to marry you! It would be a great show (it works for farmers here in Germany and you have much better selling points) and there wouldn't be any language barriers. Important when raising children, as you know well.

Cheers and good luck,
Maureen

Alec Baldwin has bad press on his private life, but you don't know anything about him or his behaviour is the cry.Sarah Palin has bad press on her private life, what's the cry?He should apologise to the women he slated, not the senator.I have seen some of the men these women marry to get away from exploitation and to save their families from hell, they are to be pitied, not mocked, there are some who abuse the situation, but most are trapped.

Gosh, 7 is for rationals, but for sure I think you sound number 88 :-).

Are you aware that San Miguel is really light compared to other beers.
Maybe VODKA is the 4-star liver killer and ABSINTH (if you know) is the 5-star. :-)).

As an American woman with above average intelligence and a terrific sense of humor, it strikes me that Mr. Baldwin's joke about mail-order brides is more of an insult to American women than it is an affront to Filipinas. He's expressing exaggerated, cartoonish frustration on a comedy TV program. That's fair. Actors act, afterall.

This writer has been known to crack a joke or two about the necessity of importing strong male flesh to the USA from, say Brazil or Italy, due to the lack of talent and intelligence among the stereotypically American men I've encountered so far. It's funny to SOME people, anyway, especially to those who know me well.

I get your drift here, Alec. Pickin's are slim for some of us ladies out here, too, if one has some integrity and taste, that is. No insult intended.

You said it, Baby. Sweet as our Filipino sisters are...? Everyone gets the joke that old Alec thinks American women are ball-breakers. Or... to be kind...? The joke is... it's the power relationship he is comfortable with.

Tell you what though, Alec Baldwin is a brother and while he will indulge himself with a joke about a mail order bride, he would feel goofy in that kind of power relationship because he is a Darling.

Friends of Alec Baldwin, set him up. Come on. Smart. Beautiful. Educated. You must think he is wonderful. I don't think that's asking too much.

Are you sure you are above average? Such kind is a scarcity nowadays.
What I usually encounter are typically blondes with their typical thinking and their typical boobies.
No insult intended too.

After the AMERICAN hoopla over Obama's Special Olymics joke, does this really surprise anyone? People complain that we have all gotten so desensatized, but that seems hard to believe when someone gets offended by anything that is said no matter how innocuous.

Carrie Prejean speaks her mind and she's featured in a derogatory piece on this site every day.

Revilla and most of the rest of the Filipino congress are hypocrites. Human trafficing is the leading industry in the Philippines: sending Filipinos on overseas contracts is the country's largest source of income and the under-the table payoffs to corrupt politicians is among their many illegal sources of money. 'Entertainers' sent to Japan and Thailand end up in flesh factory bars where they are forced to do things even Japanese women won't do. Many of the stewards and dirty job workers on cruise ships are Filipino as are a lot of the oil field workers in the middle east. The women sent there and to Singapore and Hong Kong are routinely abused, imprisoned and raped at the pleasure of their employers until their contracts are up. Some have been held incognito for the entire contract.
Instead of trying to improve the lives of their own people and advocate economic development in their own country, these unscrupulous pols encourage this trafficing since it is an easy and profitble (for them) income. The corruption there is unimaginable!

True and horrific. The out of date reference from Baldwin wasn't very compassionate or understanding of the illicit connotations, but it wasn't meant with such severity as your situation posits.
I hate to see him begging for forgiveness and all of a suddenly becoming a huge benefactor or spokesperson for such an ugly human trade....but it would be nice to get more support for the eradication of those territories corrupted by trafficking.

Hyprocrites, maybe some? But what do you really wanted to say :-)?
Most or the Rest of the of the Philippine Congress? There are lots of opposition in this country right now and they are more than half of whole congress, not to mention the neutrals and independents, so I do not think most of them.

Human trafficking is NOT the leading industry in the Philippines, it is the leading industry (mafia corporation) of USA. Check the true to life movie TRADE (2007). The victims, yes the victims are mostly from the poorer countries of Latin America, Asia and even Europe.

Truly these people do dirty job, but hey, they are hard working people and NOT just sitting on their fat asses, drinking beers and watching movies all the time doing nothing.

The corruption in USA is ALSO unimaginable, maybe even worse. So what is commotion?
What do you think you can DO to help ease such world problems, instead of just sitting on you ass and make uneducated silly guess or observations?

Why don't you go there for yourself and find out. The country may be poor with many areas of squalor. But you could not meet kinder, warmer, friendlier people than native Filipinos. Open your eyes, use your brain and stop listening to drivel about a country and its people, whom you obviously know nothing about.

The Philippines hasn't been under martial law since 1981 under former president Ferdinand Marcos, who's been dead for about 20 years. Do try to keep up, or at least Google before making stupid statements.
