BAKERSFIELD, Calif. &mdash (AP); A 4-year-old California boy may be permanently blinded after police say his father bit out one of his eyes and mutilated the other.

Bakersfield police say 34-year-old Angel Vidal Mendoza appeared to be under the influence of PCP when he attacked the boy April 28. Afterwards police say Mendoza rolled his wheelchair outside and began hacking at his own legs with an ax.

Four-year-old Angelo Mendoza Jr. told police, "my daddy ate my eyes."

Doctors at Mercy Hospital say it's unclear whether Angelo will regain vision in his right eye.

The boy's mother wasn't home at the time.

I want to put in this about PCP. It has truly horrific effedts on the brain, and you can either read more on the website listed below, or look it up on Wikipedia, or anywhere else:

From Nat’l Institute on Drug Abuse:
http://www.nida.nih.gov/infofacts/hallucinogens.html

PCP (phencyclidine) was developed in the 1950s as an intravenous anesthetic, but this use has been discontinued due to serious adverse effects.

The use of PCP as an approved anesthetic in humans was discontinued in 1965 because patients often became agitated, delusional, and irrational while recovering from its anesthetic effects. PCP is a “dissociative drug,” meaning that it distorts perceptions of sight and sound and produces feelings of detachment (dissociation) from the environment and self. First introduced as a street drug in the 1960s, PCP quickly gained a reputation as a drug that could cause bad reactions and was not worth the risk. However, some abusers are attracted by feelings of strength, power, and invulnerability as well as a numbing effect on the mind that PCP can induce.

From Wikipedia, I learned that although it had been marketed as a veterinary anesthetic in 1967, it was discontinued.

Also, I learned that there is a donation site for Angel at

They should remove the father's eyes out and transplant them into the son's eye sockets.

And I'm a Democrat! Just imagine what the right-wingers are thinking...

Beats the heck outta me! They should turn this joker loose in the general prison population for swift and instant justice. Waterboarding would be way too kind for this creature.

I read about this story last weekend. I am so glad that it's starting to get some national attention...because hopefully this child will start to get the help that he needs and deserves.

Similiar things have happened to children. I don't know if you all remember the case of David Rothenberg who's father set him on fire at the age of 6, resulting in 3rd degree burns over 90% of his body. His story went national in the 80s and the country rallied around him and now he is a productive adult.

THE NEXT QUESTION IS NOT WHY BUT HOW...HOW ARE WE GOING TO HELP THIS CHILD?

He needs medical and psychological care. His care takers are going to need therapy themselves and the proper support and tools required to raise a child that experienced a trauma like this.
He is going to need to attend a good school for the blind and therapy.

I have been emailing his case to child advocacy groups in california. I hope that everybody does a google search and decides to email them too. This child needs an advocate. CPS can not be trusted and his extended family may not be equiped.

Please email this link to child advocacy groups so this child can get the help he needs.

California Penal Code:

203. Every person who unlawfully and maliciously deprives a human
being of a member of his body, or disables, disfigures, or renders it
useless, or cuts or disables the tongue, or puts out an eye, or
slits the nose, ear, or lip, is guilty of mayhem.

204. Mayhem is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for
two, four, or eight years.

205. A person is guilty of aggravated mayhem when he or she
unlawfully, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to
the physical or psychological well-being of another person,
intentionally causes permanent disability or disfigurement of another
human being or deprives a human being of a limb, organ, or member of
his or her body. For purposes of this section, it is not necessary
to prove an intent to kill. Aggravated mayhem is a felony punishable
by imprisonment in the state prison for life with the possibility of
parole.

206. Every person who, with the intent to cause cruel or extreme
pain and suffering for the purpose of revenge, extortion, persuasion,
or for any sadistic purpose, inflicts great bodily injury as defined
in Section 12022.7 upon the person of another, is guilty of torture.

The crime of torture does not require any proof that the victim
suffered pain.

206.1. Torture is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison
for a term of life.

Has this whole country gone insane? I've never seen (and I'm 65) the amount of horrible abuse of children, murder, drugs, corruption, and just plain unlawfulness in my lifetime. I t hink that people who say it's not any worse than it's always been are just plain NUTS! Our laws are weak, our punishment is too lax, our judges are incompetent or corrupt, and our policemen are expected to enforce the laws with one hand tied behind them only to see their arrests and convictions overturned by an insane judge or court. If we don't get back to honest, hard law enforcement and swift penalties, this nation is done for. It's sad to see criminals have no fear of punishment and be set free and back on the streets to commit more crimes within a short period of incarcaration . It's insane!

lawyers i understand tht part, but social workers who help people deal with society, esp those left out to dry by right wing ideologues would have helped this guy.
and psychologist, maybe couldhave helped him with his depression or diagnosed his mental illness that drove him to drugs and to do this horrible thing to his own kid.
as i said before home schoolers need a more stringent curriculum

yep, blame the people who defend civil rights, create social order, serve disturbed individuals and dysfunctional families. i'm sure the eye eater had his lawyer on speed dial but was on his way to see his shrink to process his feelings about all the interference the social worker was causing in his family. you are such a steaming tool.

Its really not that hard to explain. When there is no hope in sight for the majority of Americans, and you see a few getting fat at your expense, some people just finally dont care anymore. I guess some people just think it really doesnt matter what they do. Not trying to justify this or any crime, but I can understand where some people would stoop to PCP, robbery, even murder. When you have nothing to lose, you really dont care about much.

I disagree, respectfully. This has nothing to do with the economy, with social issues or politics. This is mental illness at it's most brutal and horrifying extreme compounded by psychoactive drugs. Robbery, even most forms of murder, is a different species than cannibalizing your child.

when I read the news ,when I look around me, I find it more and more difficult to feel emotions. But this story made me cry. Has the US become such a heartless place that children are abandonned to cruelty and neglect without a thought? I would like to turn away but we must be made aware of real life .This tragedy is front page news. This is real .This is here. How can we just return to the comfort of our daily lives? What can ordinary people do to help? I know that no one can alleviate the suffering of the many but surely each of us can try to help just one person. Will this por por boy get the help he needs if his "parents" have no health insurance? What will happen to him now?

yes, the U.S. is such a place where blah blah blah. no, the U.S. happened to have this guy born in it, who is clearly deranged and probably whacked out on PCP. The child very likely appeared to be a demon whose eyes had to be eaten. doesn't make sense to me or you, but that's because we're the people in the U.S. that don't eat eyes of children, like 99.999 percent of the other people here.

This story was extremely painful to listen to. Perhaps CPS workers should be trained to look for self-absorbed, uncaring parents who seem to think their need for alcohol, drugs, etc. come before their children. This guy's history should have set off alarm bells, whether his criminal record happened yesterday or 10 years ago. Just because he was in a wheelchair would not have elicited a single moment of pity for this animal with his history of violence and drug use. This child needed an advocate who would have objected to either of the parents having custody because obviously the welfare worker didn't have his or her head screwed on straight. I'm sure the mother "straightened up" for a few hours to get her interview in. Crocodile tears, if anything. She was probably thinking of her next high and should be denied any further visiting rights, although hard to do with the child is placed with "relatives." Where were they during the 4 years of this child's hell?

CA lawmakers refused to increase taxes for the third time yesterday, leaving the state of CA with billions in deficit. Now, what will they do. They will Cut those welfare people who already are in short supply, even further. Society does not watch over every single persons welfare 24/7
Its not in the Republican lexicon.

I have noticed that instead of increasing taxes on those that can well afford it, we seem to always cut services and aid to those that cannot whenever there is a shortfall....

Is that because the poor are not big campaign contributors?

I used to work in the court system. While this particular story reads like a horror movie, mutilation and permanent harm of children is commonplace, believe me.

Our legal system gives too many rights to these biological parents - they have a fundamental constitutional right to raise their children. They only actually lose rights to the child when they do something REALLY horrendous, like, oh, I don't know, eating their children's eyes out of their head, for example.

Now these two delightful creatures will lose their parental rights, but we have a child who was now already beyond the age where he was likely to be adopted, and now blind to boot. The mother may not even lose all rights, because she was not involved. Wrap your head around that one.

That old Pat Benetar song, "Hell is for Children" just drifts through my mind for some reason.

Yes, it should be the best interest of the child, not the parents. Let them suffer for what they did to the child; "sorry" is not enough.
