Another Democrat Says CIA Records On Briefings Were Not Accurate

Obey

First Posted: 6/19/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Yet another Democrat in Congress is alleging that the CIA included incorrect information in its records about past congressional briefings on interrogation policies.

Rep. David Obey sent a letter to CIA Director Leon Panetta on Tuesday saying that "in light of current controversy about CIA briefing practices," he was "surprised to learn that the agency erroneously listed an appropriations staffer as being in a key briefing on September 19, 2006, when in fact he was not."

Writes the Wisconsin Democrat: "The list the agency released entitled 'Member Briefings on Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EITs)', shows that House Appropriations Committee defense appropriations staffer Paul Juola was in that briefing on that date. In fact, Mr. Juola recollects that he walked members to the briefing room, met General Hayden and Mr. Walker, who were the briefers, and was told that he could not attend the briefing. We request that you immediately correct this record."

The letter makes Obey the fourth Democrat to allege that the CIA's record of which members of Congress were briefed on the Bush administration's enhanced interrogation techniques contained factual errors. Former Sen. Bob Graham, in an interview with the Huffington Post, noted that the agency's records initially had him being briefed four times in 2002 about the interrogation techniques. Upon contacting officials with the CIA, it was determined that he had only attended one such briefing. Similarly, Sen. Jay Rockefeller has said that the records kept by the agency and made public on May 7 contained errors in regards to his briefings.

All told, the testimonies of these three Democratic officials bolster the case made by Speaker Nancy Pelosi that the agency's own account of those now-controversial briefings is misleading. Pelosi -- like Graham -- has insisted that members of Congress were kept in the dark in the fall of 2002 about the Bush administration's use of waterboarding on terrorist suspects.

Critics of the Speaker have chastised her for claiming that the agency would mislead members of Congress, with some conservative voices even calling for her resignation. Similar complaints have not been leveled at Rockefeller or Graham, so it will be curious and telling to watch the reaction that Obey's letter engenders.

I haven't read the MANY posts, but if anybody is making light of this situation you are a darn fool. If we cannot trust the word of the CIA as well as the Speaker of the House we have big internal problems that apparently nobody saw fit to mention previously.

The posters can only guess what is true. I will say this with reasonable certainty that Pelosi was lying about something. Nobody is that screwed up with words unless her brain was misfiring from trying to remember what lie she told when.

At this point, what matters is that Obama needs to figure out what is fact and fiction ASAP

Is lying not part of this nation's tradition, unfortunately? Why are you supprised? From the ones standing on church pulpits to the ones providing the news in the media et cetera, are all liars. And, it starts from birth-Santa Clause, then they start calling it white lies. By the time they become adults, lying becomes an art form, for most of them, in every aspect of their lives. From the clothes they wear (they want to be thinner, so wear black clothes or taller, so wear high heels), smile (smile with only your upper set of teeth showing), talk (political correctness and double-speak), walk (they want to be sexy), body constitution (they want breast, lips, buttocks, chest, inter alia, implants). With a system grounded on lies and fakery, there should be no surprises that lies are told by politicians. Though very disruptive and annoying, it's what we have to contend with! It's a national desease.

Yes,Obama needs to step in. Either Pelosi or the CIA is lying. Probably the CIA, since they have a good record for lies and deception. Eithe way, he needs to get to the bottom of it and call for her resignation if she's the one, or clean house at the CIA if it's them.

CIA lies re: Iran Contra and Iran Contra cover-up

The CIA was aware of the Contra involvement in drug trafficking, did nothing to stop it, interceded with the DEA to block investigations -- and then lied to Congress about it and about Contras being funded by proceeds from illegal arms sales to Iran...

Alan Fiers, head of CIA's Central American Task Force, pleaded guilty to withholding information about the Contras from Congress. "Dewey" Clarridge, chief of CIA Contra support operations, was indicted for lying to Congress...

Bush One pardoned Fiers, Clarridge, Weinberger and others.

CIA lies re: their role in torture and torture cover-up

Rep. David Obey: The CIA erroneously listed House defense appropriations staffer Paul Juola "as being in a key briefing [on enhanced interrogations] on September 2006, when he was not."

Former Sen. Bob Graham: The CIA's records initially had him being briefed four times in 2002 about the interrogation techniques. It was determined that he had only attended one such briefing.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller: The CIA matrix reported that Rockefeller was briefed on Feb. 4, 2003, but notes that Rockefeller received a "later individual briefing." The senator was not briefed until Sept. 4, 2003.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi: Members of Congress were kept in the dark in the fall of 2002 about the Bush administration's use of waterboarding...

Chris Mellon, Senate staffer, left the Senate in April 2004 and did not attend the briefing on July 15, 2004 that the CIA recorded him as attending.

Porter Goss, former House Intelligence Committee Chairman, was shown on the CIA chart as attending a March 8, 2005 briefing as a member of Congress. Goss was at that time the director of the CIA.

The CIA has become a rogue agency, lying to Congress and the voters, manipulating our President and apparently assassinating foreigners. This must stop. We need to know the truth. We need some type of commission similar to the Church Commission to investigate and publish the truth of their findings to the voters. We also need a Special Prosecutor to control the use of immunity given to witnesses.

Why should we believe anything the CIA says regarding torture? Has everyone forgotten about the "slam dunk" of yellow cake uranium? Remember, the slam dunk wasn't that the yellow cake existed. The CIA knew that it didn't. The slam dunk that George Tenet was talking about was that the US citizens would be convinced by the story.

Have we forgotten that we have documentation and testimony proving that the CIA has perpetrated elaborate lies to manage and manipulate us all?

Did you know that torturing lies out of detainees, of links between 9/11 and Iraq, in order to justify going to war in Iraq, wasn't the only law-breaking by the CIA under orders from the Bush administration.

The CIA showed photographs that it faked, taken in the southwest US, and told members of Congress that it was of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), aka drones, that they were capable of carrying nuclear, biological, or chemical agents, & could strike 1,000 miles inland of east coast or west coast cities.

This is what convinced members of Congress to give Bush the authority to go to war in Iraq.

Why were they doing torture (water boarding)?

It seems rather obvious, and has been confirmed, that the reason was to illicit false testimony linking Saddam to Al Qaeda, and justify the invasion of Iraq.

However, they were, and still are, claiming they were torturing to prevent further attacks. The whole pretext for the torture and the war was a lie. The motivation and psychology of the people who conceived the plan to torture, implement it as policy, and ordered it, was one of misleading deception from the start.

The CIA briefings could only have been misleading. Do you think they would actually tell Nancy Pelosi that they were torturing (water boarding) people to get them to falsely link Saddam to Al Qaeda, and that Cheney ordered it, Bush signed off on it, with lawyers' blessings?

Cheney and Rice tell us to remember what it was like back then, and that they were faced with difficult decisions and they didn't know where the next attack would come from.... Well, it was also an environment of purging all levels of government of anyone deemed disloyal to the Republicans, Bush and Cheney. Please don't say you've forgotten that environment.

Do you really think CIA people carrying out Cheney's torture plans would keep Democrats in the loop, let alone someone they considered so virulently antithetic and untrustworthy as Nancy Pelosi? Not a chance.

Common sense psychology tells you the answer - a big NO - but thankfully so do the facts.

She is right, She is not lying, but YES, Republicans are, and that is the fact. My point was not stressing my lack of knowledge or my education background. Nice attempts to be mean spirited, and demeaning. I was simple saying that Obey is not one who parades out every day for camera time like so many others. But then today, we see him out striving to defend Pelosi. Just making a note, that maybe he was repaying some dues or favors. Who needs GOOGLE or civic classes when absolutely the truth lies here in comments on HP. Haha!
12:19 PM on 05/22/2009
Trust us, your point was definitely stressing your lack of knowledge and education. Maybe you didn't mean to do it, but you did it. If you had knowledge and education, you wouldn't write things that left you wide open to ridicule, would you?

Don't worry, I don't think the liberal posters around here are attending a lot of Mensa meetings.

Thanks for showing your ignorance. I'm from WI. We have a few pretty decent legislators. Obey, Feingold, Baldwin, are all above reproach.
Your statement included 'owing favors.' That indicated your intent. Slander.
Pitiful. Uninformed. And unable to see that maybe Mr Obey's integrity demanded that he bring forth informattion that he knew to be true.
Stop apologizing. Stop your inane hypothesizing. Think before you comment here. And maybe do a little homework too.
