CANNES, France - Director Rob Marshall's new movie musical "Nine" offers a potent combination of Italian style, costumes to die for and six Academy Award-winning performers.

The story of a filmmaker and his complicated entanglements with the women in his life, it's based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical that was itself inspired by Federico Fellini's "8 1/2."

The cast includes Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren -- Oscar winners all.

"It was my dream to be in an American musical, and especially with a genius like Rob Marshall," Cotillard -- who won a best-actress Oscar for playing chanteuse Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose" -- said Monday at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Weinstein Co. screened a two-minute trailer and a featurette on the film for reporters, giving a glimpse of "La Dolce Vita"-style Italian glamor and dazzling choreography reminiscent of Marshall's "Chicago."

"Nine" is scheduled to be released in the United States in November. Producers will be hoping the film repeats the success of "Chicago," which won six Oscars and proved musicals can still be a big draw.

"We're bringing back a tradition," said company chief Harvey Weinstein, "and that's something I think we need to do more of."

Playing Luisa in NINE and Billie in PUBLIC ENEMIES should take care of the "Marion Who?" crowd.

Looks Incredible - I can't wait to see it.

"Unusual Way" from nine is one of my favorite songs.

However it is annoying that they don't even show anyone singing. Hollywood tries to fool people into seeing Musicals by not making the trailers look like musicals. It's absurd.

I was so lucky to see Antonio Banderas on Broadyway in "9". He was Fantastic! I hope this translates better to the screen than Chicago.

As a fan of Fellini, what's missing is Rota's music. This looks and sounds like an Elvis movie with all those terrible songs sung by The King. I loved Marshall's "Chicago" but this sounds like a turkey that I will reluctantly taste. Maybe not.

I love Rota's music too but I think you may be missing a point here. "Nine" is a musical written by Maury Yeston - was on Broadway years ago. This movie is an adaptation of that musical which is an adaptation of the Fellini movie. So Rota wouldn't figure in for this project. The music you hear is Maury Yeston's.

A bunch of Academy Award winners and Kate Hudson? One of the things seems out of place. But I love Dame Judi and Daniel DL and I think Marshall is a genius. Paint me there.

You are so right! Unfortunately, being blonde and cute passes for talent in Hollywood.

I agree, I was surprised to see Kate Hudson in with the rest of those actors - she seems out of place. Maybe Rob Marshall owes Goldie Hawn a favor? ;)

It looks beautiful! But on the other hand, maybe someone should have checked
to see how many times in one year La Dolce Vita is actually rented or shown
in the major countries. I suspect it may not bring in nearly enough to cover
what appears to be an extravagant production..
