President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party as a whole have made historic gains in public trust when it comes to national security and foreign policy, according to a newly released survey by Democracy Corps.

The findings, which show Obama's approval rating on national security affairs at 64 percent among likely voters, should deal a blow to the assertions of his critics -- notably former Vice President Dick Cheney -- who contend that the president's policies have made the country less safe.

According to the Democracy Corps, which was founded by former Clinton administration officials James Carville and Stan Greenberg, Obama now has higher ratings on national security than he does in his overall job approval, which stands at 58 percent. Democrats, for the first time in the firm's research, are at "full parity on perceptions of which party would best manage national security."

Among many interesting data points include these:

  • 61 percent of respondents approve of the job Obama is doing fighting terrorism.
  • 67 percent approve of how he is handling Iraq.
  • 68 percent approve of his policies for Afghanistan, and the same number says the president is improving Americans stand in the word.

"The public flatly rejects the claims from former Vice President Cheney and other Republicans that Obama's policies put Americans at risk," the authors conclude. "A strong majority says Obama's policies are increasing US security -- compared to the majority who now say President George W. Bush's policies undermined America's security."

There are, however, several remaining areas of weakness. As the poll's authors write, "The one area in which Obama has not overcome public doubts about his party's stewardship of national security involves the leadership of the military," with "53 percent of likely voters having "serious doubts about the president and his national security policies." Moreover, "voters remain unclear on this mission in Afghanistan and suspect the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq will bring more violence."

That said, the results underscore a significant paradigm shift in the traditional perception of which party is favored when it comes to international affairs. Indeed, by and large, the favorable trends for Obama have filtered their way down to the Democratic Party.

  • Democrats are favored over Republicans by a margin of 52 to 35 percent on the question of which party better handles foreign policy.
  • Democrats are favored by a margin of 44 to 32 percent on the situation in Afghanistan; and 47 to 37 percent on the situation in Iraq.
  • On the war on terrorism, the two parties are trusted equally, 41 percent a piece.

Democrats do, however, "still trail significantly on the question of 'ensuring a strong military.' There, Republicans lead by 18 points, 53 to 35 percent."

If there were one additional element concern for the GOP in the study's findings. it would be this: many of the respondents who favored Obama's handling of national security and foreign affairs were those voters who will play major roles in deciding future elections.

According to the findings:

  • "Self-described moderates favored the GOP on national security by 25 points in 2003, but now favor Democrats by a decisive 23 points, 54 to 31 percent."
  • "Women trusted the GOP more on national security by 20 points in 2003; now they trust the Democrats more by 17 points."
  • "Voters under age 30 trusted Republicans more national security by a 27 point margin in 2003; now they trust Democrats more by 18 points, 50 to 32 percent.

The findings of the progressive leaning Democracy Corps were pulled from a survey of 1,000 2008 voters, including 160 of whom were interviewed via cell phone.

I had to stop reading at the 18% Republican's favored for insuring a strong military. The military, as well as a reporter here provided a report card on who voted for what regarding insuring our military received the assistance they needed to be strong. Then Senator Obama received a B, Biden an A, and McCain a D- which was only that high because of his service (which was disgraceful before he was captured). Worse, the report also showed that the republican party in general voted against troop personal protective equipment, denied Hum-V armor improvements, VA benifits, and a long list of things that did not benifit them as war profiteers.

The only way I could imagine this desparity is via the fact that we don't have the money to invest in new technologies for war. I think new mental and spiritual innovations for diplomatic conceptualization are a lot more significant right now.

God Bless America. What a Country! President Obama continues to embrace state's secrets privilege to overturn entire court cases, denies court ordered habeas corpus rights to Bagram detainees, denies releasing court ordered photos, keeps military commissions courts, threatens Britain to withhold torture memos or will cut off intelligence sharing, will keep 30-50,000 troops in Iraq forever, sent 20,000 more men/women to die in the "Graveyard of Empires, drones kill innocent civilians continuously, actively blocking all attempts at independent investigations and dishonoring our name in ignoring our treaties concerning war crimes (torture) and crimes against humanity (aggressive war)...

and everyone is as pleased as punch!

It takes me back to what (of all places) Queen Amidala says from Star Wars-
"So this is how Liberty dies-- with thunderous applause".

Thank you. I'm pleased to see that some US citizens and residents are waking up to the reality around them and not continuing to live in the bubble of falsehoods and propaganda tthat are being dished out to them by the US media and cable networks. I wonder what the reaction by Barack would be if the UK decided to label itself as a "Christian" country and demand that all Jews and other racial or religious minorities made a pledge to reagrd it as such?

Barack is no leader; he blows with the wind and the sooner he's out of office the better for the world at large and, if it cares to rethink its policy, the US as well. No country should expect or guarantee in the 21st century that it's security is paramount, since instability can come not only from outside but inside a state as well; and I wonder with whites in the majority in the US how Barack would also feel if the US Congress declared that the US was a white state and Blacks and other minorities had to accept that or lump it? Significantly, where would that place him, seeing that he's the result of a white mother and black father?

DEMOCRACY NOW reported this gem today:

Obama Seeks $46 Million for Military Base in Colombia

President Obama is seeking $46 million to establish a new military facility in Colombia. The funding request has been opposed by several advocacy groups. John Lindsay-Poland of the Fellowship of Reconciliation said, “This base would feed a failed drug policy, support an abusive army, and reinforce a tragic history of US military intervention in the region.” The Pentagon has been looking for a new site in Latin America ever since Ecuador notified Washington last year that it would not renew the lease on the US base in Manta, Ecuador.

His overall approval is at 58% now? It seems like that is a pretty steep drop from 67% a couple of months ago. Does that number make anyone else worry a bit?

58 is still very good, considering that, geez, we are still in a deep recession. His numbers will get lower than this and will fluctuate. No biggie.

No, the Presidency is not a popularity contest. If you had to withstand the scrutiny and criticism on a daily basis that Obama has faced from all sides, a few less people would probably like you too. Keep the numbers in perspective - you're in a room with 100 other people, 33 of them don't like you already and are VERY vocal about it, a few months later 9 more people are not too pleased with you...are you really ready to jump off a cliff? If yes, then you probably shouldn't be the President anyway, should you?

Sam and Jason you all need to perform a truth in journalism seminar for print, MSM, and Cable. You guys do excellent reporting based on facts, researched materials, and you do not follow the Washington Beltway lie of the day as a determination of what you report on for that day. You are reaching the American people and going around the Washington and NY media chatter box.
Thanks for this important update on foreign policies; maybe someone should send this to Senator Harry Reid and the Demos that refuse to give the President the money he need to close Gitmo; which, we have overwhelmingly expressed to the President we want closed.

Note.....
Netanyahu wants the Palestinians to acknowledge that Israel is a "Jewish state." I don't understand this demand. Israel is not a Jewish state, it is a multi-cultural state, with about half a million non-Jewish Russians and Ukrainians and 20% of its population is Arab. If "Jewish" is meant religiously, then observant Jews are actually a minority of the population in Israel. If "Jewish" is meant racially, then it is a particularly shameful demand. It is like demanding either that the US be recognized as a "Christian" country or as a "white" country. Obama was ill-advised to use the diction, himself.
Juan Cole.

If it took you until the last sentence to figure out Democracy Corps leans progressive, even though the article stated at the top it was founded by James Carville and Stan Greenberg, then you should shut your ignorant hole. The fact that it is a progressive group does not in any way imply their polling has a bias.
