Palin Clothing Complaint Dismissed By FEC

WASHINGTON — The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a complaint over the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the good-government group that filed the complaint, argued that candidates aren't supposed to use donor money for personal expenses such as clothes. The FEC ruled Tuesday that the ban doesn't apply to party money, however.

The Alaska governor was Sen. John McCain's pick for vice president. The purchases from such high-end stores as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus drew criticism for Palin, the self-described hockey mom.

The Republican National Committee told the commission that party money rather than candidate campaign money was used for the purchases.

"We have no information to the contrary," the FEC wrote in its decision.

The RNC also argued that the shopping spree was allowed under campaign finance rules that let the party spend on behalf of and in coordination with presidential campaigns.

The RNC spent at least $150,000 on designer clothing, accessories and hair and makeup services for Palin after she became McCain's running mate in September. The high-end duds contrasted with the down-to-earth image that Palin and the campaign sought to craft for her.

The purchases included $75,062 worth at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis; $49,425 at Saks Fifth Avenue; $9,447 at Macy's; and $789 at the luxury retailer Barneys New York. Goods were also bought for Palin family members, such as $4,902 spent at upscale men's store Atelier and $92 at Pacifier, a Minneapolis baby boutique.

Melanie Sloan, CREW's executive director, argued that the commission's decision opens the door for political parties to buy lavish wardrobes for candidates to use, and that contributes to the public's cynicism about politicians.

"It's typical of the FEC to never take on anybody for anything," Sloan said. "It seems like the kind of thing they should have come down on, but they seem to think their hands are tied."

The commission in March asked Congress to expand the ban on personal use of campaign funds to include party money, Sloan noted. Congress has yet to act, she said. CREW plans no further action on its commission complaint, Sloan said.

The RNC did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The controversy over Palin's clothing overshadowed the Republican campaign in the final weeks.

The McCain-Palin campaign said some of the clothing was returned almost immediately because it was the wrong size. After the November election, the RNC sought to get all the items back and planned to return them to the stores or give them to charity.

The McCain campaign and Palin characterized the purchases as legitimate campaign expenses and said there was never any plan for Palin to keep the items.

The article's author doesn't seem to know that the last we heard of those costly duds was that they were laying around a Republican Party office in boxes and bags. So much for 'returning' them or their pretense at 'donating' them.

All of the whining on HP about Sarah's cloths, and it was legal all along. Much to do about NOTHING!

I would love to know where these clothes are now. They were supposedly going to be donated after the campaign....I wish that Palin would disappear like her wardrobe!

I've never seen people so threatened by a female politician (except maybe Hillary).

Gee I wonder why this type of fiasco didn't happen on the Democrat side of the campaigns.

Let's analyze this. Of course the McCains can afford to dress as Rich as they'd like. On the Republican convention opening night, Ice queen Cindy McCain's wardrobe and jewels were estimated to $300k. Although Sarah Palin is the governor of Alaska and her husband Todd supposedly has a six figure income. The GOP treated this family like they were hillbillies in need of a makeover. Palin's Valentino jacket was $2500.

Joe "I ride the train" Biden and family didn't asked the DNC for wardrobe money.
Meanwhile Michelle Obama and her girls are dressing in J. Crew. On the campaign trail, Barack wore shoes with holes in them.

The fiscally responsible Republicans just lost their minds and the election.

Actually, I can't quite figure out the Palin hate here, except that it's an irrational fear that she is the real deal in a beautiful package. She was always well groomed, her clothes fit her beautifully, and she is a real American success story that few on this blog seem to be able to acknowledge. And she is who she is because of her own accomplishments, she's not tagging on the coattails of her husband or getting 300% raises because her husband has just been elected to office. Quite a woman, and one who scares the bejesus out of all of you, which more than anything explains the irrational hate and distorted facts.

It took 6 colleges to get it right. Michelle got into the Ivy League due to her grades. She received her Law degree before her husband did. I think Obama was on Michelle coat tails. She was the Mayor's chief of staff. Remember due Palin own admission she was just your average hockey mom then got into politics. Michelle was in politics by her husband. Name the Board of Directors that Palin sat on. Michelle sat on 4 Boards.

Oh, Freddie . . . poor, del usional, Freddie--

The only thing here that's "irrational" is you. Obviously, P itiful Palin was your choice (hey, we all make mistakes), but "the real deal" she certainly was not.

1. She's very . . .how shall I put this?? . . . 'intellectually challenged,'. . . and THAT'S putting it mildly. She could barely string together a coherent, grammatically correct, properly enunciated sentence!!

2. No morals or ethics to speak of. High school friends were given jobs simply because they were friends -- nothing at all to do with being qualified. Oh, and let's not forget she L IED about 'bridges to nowhere' and funding them. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

3. She's a horribly vi ndictive wit*ch. (We all know what she tried to do to her former brother-in-law.)

4. She's a r a c e-b aiter and h @ t e m o n g e r. Her rallies became nothing more than K la n conventions where attendees were able to yell out any and every r.a.c.i.a.l ep.it.het they wanted and Simple Sarah thought it was just fine.

5. She's a hypocrite. (Take your pick from hundreds of examples -- be sure to carefully examine everything she criticized candidate Obama for).

Freddie, when selecting candidates, you really should try to look beyond aesthetics (pssst... that means looks, attractiveness) which clearly is the only argument you offer in support of Sarah. Just remember this: 'Beauty' fades, 'd u .m b' is forever.

Pity. It was a really nice wardrobe. They coulda either auctioned it and retired McCain's campaign debt or given it to one of those charities that provides nice outfits for poor women going to job interviews.

I think this will be brought back up by her own party members in the 2012 primary and we can just watch the show then.

I still don't see any value for the money. With that much money on my back and face I'd be smokin'. She never made it past mediocre in looks. She didn't even get that far in brains, so maybe it did buy something.
