Uighurs Fire Back At Gingrich From Gitmo: "Why Does He Hate Us So Much?"

Uighers

Chinese Muslims known as Uighurs, detained for more than six years and counting at the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, are firing back at Newt Gingrich, who has accused them of terrorist ties and says that releasing them into the United States would endanger the country.

The seventeen Uighurs told their translator, Rushan Abbas, how they felt when they heard Gingrich's remarks. Abbas has been working with them in Guantanamo since 2002, initially contracted by the Department of Defense. The Uighurs' rejoinder to Gingrich is the first quasi-interview with detainees still imprisoned in Guantanamo.

The Bush administration has cleared the Uighurs for release; five have already been released to third countries. If returned to China, there is a high probability they'd be tortured. A vibrant Uighur community in Northern Virginia has offered to take them in, but Gingrich and others are objecting.

"Why is that our problem?" Gingrich wondered in a recent TV interview. "Why are we protecting these guys? Why does it become an American problem?"

Gingrich pushed further in an op-ed, claiming that '[b]y their own admission, Uighurs being held at Guantanamo Bay are members of or associated with the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), an al Qaeda-affiliated group designated as a terrorist organization under U.S law."

No, they have never admitted that, says Abbas, adding that the Uighurs call the claim "baseless, factless slander against them." Abbas returned from Guantanamo Monday. She now works with the Uighurs' defense attorneys, but said that her comments to the Huffington Post were not intended as advocacy on their behalf.

The Uighurs call relatives in the United States and Europe often, she says, so stay up on the news. They were surprised to hear the accusation from the former Speaker of the House.

"Why does he hate us so much and say those kinds of things? He doesn't know us. He should talk to our attorneys if he's curious about our background," Abbas relates. "How could he speak in such major media with nothing based in fact? They were very disappointed how Newt Gingrich was linking them to ETIM which they never even heard of the name ETIM until they came to Guantanamo Bay."

The Uighurs are apparently under the misconception that American columnists are fact-checked for accuracy. "They just cannot understand," she says. "How come the media doesn't even verify the story? How could they just publish something like that without checking whether what he says is true or not?"

The Uighurs, before the outburst by Gingrich, were unfamiliar with the former speaker. "Whoever told them this news explained to them he was Speaker of the House and a very high profile person during the Clinton administration," says Abbas.

"Such a high profile person speaking such lies about us," she says they fretted. "They are concerned about their safety where ever they go."

A Gingrich spokesman did not return an e-mail requesting comment. The Uighurs were picked up by bounty hunters in Afghanistan who sold them to the U.S. military.

"China suppresses all the Uighur peaceful movement and labels all the movement terrorist," says Rebiya Kadeer, author of Dragon Fighter: One Woman's Epic Struggle for Peace with China and hailed by President Bush as a human rights champion.

"I hope that some of them will be released to the United States," says Kadeer, who now lives in Northern Virginia, through a separate translator.

Gingrich has been joined by Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) and Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) in objecting to the Uighurs' relocation to the United States. Those objections are weighing on the administration.

Wolf spokesman Dan Scandling noted that Wolf is a champion of the Uighur cause and fought for the release of Kadeer from a Chinese prison. But he isn't convinced of their innocence. "We have had several conversations with people in the intelligence community who have told us otherwise," said Scandling. Wolf represents Langley, Va., where the CIA is headquartered.

Wolf "has not said they should not be released, just that they should not be released into the United States," said Scandling.

Wolf, in objecting to the Uighurs, said that they are fundamentalist Muslims and once smashed a TV because a woman on the screen was baring her arms.

Abbas, however, says that the detainee who went off on the TV has already been released to Albania and that it had nothing to do with any bare arms. Rather, he had repeatedly requested to speak to camp supervisors and had been ignored, so he chose to cause a scene. Scandling said Wolf's account of the TV smashing came from a story in the L.A. Times.

The coming of the Obama administration brought the Uighurs hope. They were "extremely happy" about his election and had "huge faith in President Obama," Abbas says.

They began counting the days after inauguration. They still have hope, she says, but its wearing thin. "Here we are approaching June now. When is this going to happen?" she says they wonder.

Obama has pledged to close the prison by January 2010. The Uighurs don't see how that's possible.

"If we are the innocent ones from day one -- and for the past six years, and the government knew we were innocent -- if we are still here, how he is going to deal with the 240 prisoners and shut down the base by next January?" Abbas says they ask. "They're a little bit skeptical about it actually happening."

Anyone who imagines that the gitmo Uighurs are "innocent" of training at Tora Bora camps for the purpose of planing terror attacks has been drinking too much cool aid. Did we send our young men to Afghanistan after 911 so the terrorists they capture can later be turned loose in the USA? Please. Send them to China where they will get a fair trial, which is more than they were planing to give the innocent victims in China that they were planing to blow up.
Chinese Uighurs trained with Abdul Haq

Risky Business [Cliff May]

Abdul Haq is a member of al-Qaeda’s elite Shura Council. He has plotted terrorist attacks. We know this because just last month the Treasury Department designated Abdul Haq a terrorist affiliated with al-Qaeda (and with the Taliban as well).

Abdul Haq also was the leader and trainer of the Uighurs detained at Gitmo. We know this because many of the Uighur detainees have acknowledged it.

So, on this basis, can we conclude that it would be neither safe nor sensible to say that Uighurs trained and led by al-Qaeda leader/trainer Abdul Haq pose no danger and should be released?

Yes, we can — but we’d be in sharp disagreement with Judge Richard M. Urbina and, based on his October 17, 2008 opinion in the D.C. District Court, with President Obama who says “there is no legitimate reason to hold” the al-Qaeda-trained Uighurs.

Guantanamo's Uyghurs should be free!!!! Uyghurs(detainees in America's Illegalllllllllllllllll prison. America most not keep them any more,...........................

Send them back to China. If they really are innocent of training in Al Q terror camps in Tora Bora, for the purpose of attacking China, I am sure China will exonerate them!
07:55 PM on 05/20/2009
Sure, "FairTalk", send them back to China where thousands of Uyghurs are languishing in prisons on false terrorism charges, when they have done nothing but protest peacefully against Chinese policies. China would LOVE to get their hands on the remaining 17 Uyghurs to make an example of them.

"FairTalk", I've seen you around the Internet in every Uyghur-related forum, and I'm wondering how many nickels you have accumulated. You know what I mean.

By the way, "FairTalk", the reason the original 22 Uyghurs were in Afghanistan is because they fled there from East Turkestan, just like Tibetans flee to Nepal and India from Tibet. Many of them wanted to go on to Turkey and other countries, and even America. Afghanistan, as you surely know from your history classes, borders East Turkestan. Since the authorities in other bordering nations, including Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, are now in cahoots with the PSB to send all Uyghurs who are Chinese nationals back to China, Afghanistan was one place that Uyghurs could go to in order to try and transit on to a third or fourth country. The lawlessness that existed there, while presenting them with danger, also provided them, ironically, with a measure of safety.

I'm amazed at the faith you have in China's legal process. I've known a lot of Chinese people who don't have faith in China's legal process.

What makes you so certain that they would get a "fair trial" in China?
12:22 PM on 05/20/2009
Its BS to say why are these people our problem? G... I wonder why... We should take responsibility for these people and allow them into our community with support. The chances of one of them acting out and doing something horrible is probably just as high with regular citizens at the moment given the state of global politics and our nations social situations. You cant pluck someone from their life, lock them up and torture them for years, then try to paw them off on other countries as undesirable drains on our resources or security threats. We love to create the monsters then just set them loose dont we? Disposable world through the US lense.

Trns, how many regular citizens went to Al Q terror training camps in Tora Bora?

How many are fighting with Al Q and the Taliban in the Swat Valley today?

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/pakistan-hands-over-nine-uyghur-militants-to-china/451721/
Pakistan has handed over nine Chinese militants arrested from the country's lawless tribal areas to China, bringing to light for the first time presence of Uyghur fighters amongst the ranks of Taliban and al-Qaeda.

The Chinese militants were involved in attacks on security forces and other terrorist activities, sources in the Interior Ministry were quoted as saying by Geo News channel.

Though there were Chinese Uyghur militants captured in Afghanistan and taken to Guantanamo Bay after the collapse of Taliban regime in Kabul, this is the first time media reports have come of their presence in the Pakistan's tribal belt which is suspected to be the hideout of top al-Qaeda and Taliban leadership.

More regular citizens went to camps and became extremists than we would like to talk about or deal with openly.

The former unreformed legislator, a History professor lacks of knowledge and affirms that some historians are just charlatans. The neo-cons use the ignorance and or apathy of the American people to inject all kind of fear mongering for he knows well it will be repeated as a Gospel. How far are these liers, mentally disturbed are willing to go in order to instigate hate and make us believe we are full of good intentions and whatever wrong we are doing is because we, as the jewish are the chosen ones and therefore, given the divine aunthority to do as we please.

Newt thinks he can win the White House by stoking up the base who hate anyone who is not white or "christian". Why else would he make these comments, not necessarily backed up by the facts?
08:59 PM on 05/21/2009
Because our government know that the Chinese Uighurs are fighting with Al Q and the Taliban today in the Swat Valley in Pakistan.

The issue is, is terrorism against China supported by the US, or not?

Agreed, but if the Bush administration cleared them for release, why should they be sent to a Federal prison and held for trial? If they are innocent, then we should welcome them and help them to re-unite with their families....yes, here in the US if necessary.

We know good and well that if the Bushies thought for one minute that these guys were dangerous, they would NEVER have cleared them.

The neo-cons always have created a boogey man, Reagan convinced us that we need to be aware because we have anemies everywhere, did he ever discussed why? does NEW..t forget that Bush and Co. have generated a step by step manual on creating terorists thus porpusely giving the US an excuse to invade and sacrifice people and treasure.

Yeah, right; conversations with the CIA. Like they never get anything wrong. Weren't they the people who said the Bay of Pigs invasion would be a success because the Cuban peasants would rise up and join us in ousting Castro?

The CIA (which used to be run by Dubbya's daddy) may be professionals at their craft, but they're also human, and as prone to wishful thinking as any politician. Often they see what they want to see, which explains why their "intelligence" is seldom intelligent.

The worst part of the Uighur story is that we could have cultivated them as Islamic allies by championing their cause, but the Grand Old "All About the Benjamins" Party doesn't want to lose China as a trading partner. In this case, "intelligence" means we'll call the Uighurs terrorists as long as Beijing says they're terrorists.

Well, they were training in Al Q terror camps in Tora Bora for a reason, no?

Newt is just like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly and Glen Beck; they all just spout words and accusations without any proof. They all claim that they are not journalist, but when one label them as "entertainers" then they also get mad. These folks always make accusations and claims without any FACTS. And the media allows them to continue to do this.

Golibs, it is your ignorance that is sstupidity. When you round anyone up for any crime, they should be tried in a court of law. If you round them up, it is because you claim you have a reason to do so and that person should have the right to defense and prove their innocence. But, you are still living the days of slavery and bigotry. You think that only white(Europeans) have a right to a fair trial. If your theory is correct; Why was the so-called "American Taliban" given a day in court and send to an "American Prison".?
