CQ Politics :

Most lawmakers view the prospect of moving prisoners from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to their districts as a negative proposition. But at least one Democratic senator is open to the idea as a potential economic boost to his struggling state.

Prison security may be adequate to keep detainees from escaping. However, Federal Judges can also help detainees by releasing them. Where would they go after release? Into cities? Also, courthouses could be targets during trials. It is time to exercise some common sense and not idealism.

Then it's not the accused that frighten you, it's our criminal justice system?

If they come to Michigan, I want them in the general prison population. The first time they drop the soap they'll be begging for Gitmo.

As someone living in Michigan, I say bring it on.
After giving a way all of their jobs to illegal aliens, their economy needs something.
How much more perfect can you get! If you look at a map of North America, Michigan looks like a hand and a wad of toilet paper wiping a giant butt.
Michigan might also be a good place for that nuclear waste dump that Nevada doesn't want.
Canada has always found it to be a great place to dump it's trash.

""But McCain said the issue has been muddied by the public perception that the administration would release dangerous prisoners to walk the streets in U.S. neighborhoods. “Whether that’s accurate or inaccurate, that’s the impression that the American people have,” McCain said.""

Any American who actually believe that is too stupid for words.

Someone should explain exactly how it will be so much better when detainees are on US soil.
How building a Michigan gitmo will be so much better than the current gitmo.

Other than it being a very expensive bad idea with loads of unintended consequences, there's one thing to be said in favor of putting them in with our prison population actually. They certainly wouldn't like the change from the overly indulgent treatment they have now. Despite all your yelling about how they're all tortured, you should look at the actual facts of their detainment. They wouldn't have it so easy in a regular prison. Yeah, turn them over to live among some hardened cons.

Well many reason. One reason would be to look and ask why GITMO was opened in the first place. The idea was that it is outside the USA and not part of USA (we lease it), so US laws would not be applied. So here we are telling world that we dont trust our court system and we will make a new system that will be out of any other system (reminds of Cheney that VP is not part of executive and is not part of legislative, and we all know that it is not part of judiciary. Damn those civic lessons that taught us there there are three sides of govt) . So if North Korea get hold of an american and move it their Gitmo, we will not be sitting quielty. You live with the law, you dont like a law then you change it. You try and convict the people and then you put them in super max. There could be a super max at GITMO too but the key is you try and convict and not just hold them for ever. Gitmo has a bad rap now, so super max there will not be a great idea now, just as it is hard for any one to be named hitler or satan or lucifer because of bad rap associated with these names..

Put the prisoners in northern Michigan where they only have about 15 days of decent weather a year, and the prisoners will confess to anything to be sent home.

As a person living in Michigan, I think Levin is right. Build here an state of the art super max prison. I hope the michigan delegation is wise enough to see the benefit of that. Closing GITMO is good for USA and opening a super max in Michigan will be good for Michigan. We sure could use few jobs here.

I live in Michigan, our unemployment rate is over 12% moving upward (auto's you know) and we need jobs up here! We have some seriously bad guys incarcerated in our penal system (every state does) and it is not a problem keeping them under control. The "accused terrorists" being held in the gulag called gitmo are NOT Lex Luther (Thanks Thom Hartmann for that line). Bush and company (a group of frightened people) sure did a good job of Scaring the American people. C'mon people we're better than that!!!

Send them to Texas.

They love showing off their justice system.

People being afraid of these prisoners is ridiculous. Go ahead and release them into the city and we'll see how long they last. I'm not celebrating this, I'm just pointing out that them being incarcirated is also in their personal interests as well.

You know. Can you imagine what would happen to these men if the Government announced a date and time that they would be released on the streets of Manhattan or any of the NY boroughs? They'd be dead in minutes.

move them from sunny tropical cuba to frozen jobless MICHIGAN!! have these government monsters no soul, no compassion at all? they haven't been found guilty of anything at all and they're being herded to some gulag in michigan.... we need to find our bearings as human beings; we cannot sentence people to michigan for mere suspicion of terrorism.
i suggest texas with the conservatives and the fire ants. that way if (god, let us hope) texas secedes- the gitmo's are outta here by default.

Good call.

Give them their day in court I for one don't think any secrets would come out that is not already known to stop a fair trial.

This need to end.

The majority of the remaining "non-combatants" were not CAPTURED by American forces, but purchased by paid bounty to Afghan mercenaries! Like the Uighers!! I've worked in prisons in Michigan and Arizona, and I can attest that the educational system in Michigan causes superiority of process there. However, any transfer would be to a federal prison, not a state one, and there must be military security and federal trial systems connected to this shameful continued detension. Thank goodness that Sen. Levin realizes the absurdity of thinking American prisons can't be capable of safely detaining and processing the trials in a timely (finally) manner (without the mercenary idiots from contracted agencies). Didn't Montana also suggest they could do the job and would gladly take the funding to do so . . . plus the census benefit of having those incarcerated aliens as residents of their state?? I agree that the end of American cowardism has begun, and finally this shameful chapter of buying for bounty and keeping those purchased people prisoners for many years has begun to end, thanks to Obama.
