FACT: Obama Explains The Constitution's "Fundamental Flaw" Was Slavery. The out of context video the RNC links to contains audio from a September 6, 2001 program called "Slavery and the Constitution" on WBEZ Chicago. On the show, Obama explained that the "fundamental flaw" was "Africans at the time were not considered as part of the polity that was of concern to the framers." In addition, the framers did not "see...it as a moral problem involving persons of moral worth." [WBEZ Radio, accessed 5/21/09]

What did you expect. If most of them could they would still have slaves, based on some of their boneheaded statements throughout the years.

I have a couple, thank you, and I'm an excellent shot. That doesn't mean I'll allow the RepubLIEcans to scare me. God does not give me the spirit of fear (2Tim1:7).

When you become a regional party you have to play to that region and far too many in the South still think that slavery wasn't really wrong and that lynching was just some people getting beat every once in a while.

You must be smoking crack or just a raving lunatic if you thing that "far too many in the South" still think that slavery wasn't really wrong.
Where do you live and where exactly do you get this information from?
I don't know anyone who feels this way but at the same time, most people that I know, from all races, feel that this issue has been dead for quite some time and that the less they dwell on it the better of they are.

I was born and raised in the rural South, and I've known PLENTY of people like Prakosh describes. I still do. It isn't that uncommon.

I worked in the South some time ago.

Every one of my coworkers was profoundly racist. Even the best educated of them.

I am certain things have improved. Mostly because of Affirmative Action I might add.

But the racism I witnessed was not about to go away any time soon.

"NOLA" huh? think back: Katrina. Jefferson Parish's sheriff, African-Americans trying to find shelter from the diaster.

WHAT? You think no one remembers?

Racism is far from a thing of the past and there are those who do think that the south should have won the war and that whites should be the only ones making decisions in this country. Denying these facts is a right but it does not make the facts go away.

While I am sure many in the RNC would prefer us to think they are taking this out of context the sad truth is that most of them probably do not believe allowing slavery was a flaw in the constitution.

It's all about the headlines. They throw something taken out of context and put it to to the media, they then hope that we will be too stupid or impatient to read the entire thing. Their next tactic is to then use that comment in an arsenal of complaints that becomes lost in their fuzzy list of made up, taken out of context, discussions.
It's part of the rethuglican talk and unreasonable discourse.

Well, this seems like a good challenge to everyone here on the site. Find what you can about your Elected republican official, any thing that they have said, then send it to the Democratic committee. YEAH!

Or we can find all the dirt there is on the elected democrats and send that to the New York Times. Oh, wait, I forgot that they are in full support of every single elected democrat and wouldn't print any dirt on them.

I guess the next thing that GOP would want to overtune in Loving v Virgina since they don't believe in interracial marriages.

These are the same people who think what happen at Wounded Knee as necessary in the fight of native terrorist. This Republic is far from perfect and has done some horrific crimes right here. But we have come a long way. This country is the only place where we the people can debate anything without killing each other, well at least since the Civil War. Though Limbaugh, Cheney, Rove and the rest would like it not to be. The Republicans want a two party system where they are the only ones in power. The other party would be there as window dressing and to have someone to scare the populace with.

Seems to me like all of the posts that I have been reading are calling for the extermination of the Republican Party which would be more harmful to our country than just about anything else that has happened in the past.
Yes, we committed atrocities in the past but it sure wasn't the GOP sanctioning these atrocities. The GOP wasn't even in existence when we took Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico from the Mexicans. The GOP wasn't in existence when we started the geonocide against the Native Americansw.
Study your history please.

I agree, it would be terrible if there were only one political party in this country. But if that happens, it will be the fault of republicans (not necessarily the moderates, but the far right that still seems to have a stranglehold on the party and it's direction), and no one else. They have managed to completely mariginalize themselves from where this country is headed. Over time, people change. Their attitudes change. Yet, the republican party remains the same. Which is why they are shedding supporters left and right...and center.
