Cute/Ridiculous Animal Thing Of The Day: Hamster Can't Eat Pencil (VIDEO)

While this video cannot beat the classic "Hamster Eating Popcorn on a Piano," it can bring you joy in its own right. This little guys doesn't understand that he shouldn't eat a pencil because a) it's not food b) it's too big and c) someone will film him doing it and use it to make a mockery of him on the Interweb.

he's not hungry. hamsters just like to gnaw on things and they also pick up food and random bits of stuff and stuff them in their cheeks and carry them around to keep in a personal spot where they gather stuff.
he's just being a hamster.

Getting sick of these videos and related media depictions of animals. The message we're teaching our children is that the animals we share the planet with are only here to amuse us, or to eat, or to exploit in other ways. Humanizing animals. It's very deanimalizing. Hamsters do not exist to be "cute" for us, to offer us company, provide us with YouTube hits, or otherwise be exploited by us.

I think many animals are actually here to comfort us.. You think all the dogs that exist would exist if it weren't for HUMANS? Wht about cats?

Have you ever considered that these animals are being given an evolutionary advantage because of how they interact with humans? Certainly dogs and cats are on better footing than their "wild" cousins.

Cats can and do exist without human help. They're called "feral" cats for a reason.

Dogs, on the other hand, don't do as well without human intervention. Many breeds can't even reproduce without human help ( English bulldogs, for example) and would quickly disappear if humans weren't around. Mutts and some of the larger breeds would do OK if humans were gone, but the breed distinctions would quickly disappear because of cross-breeding and all dogs would end up looking like their wild African and Asian cousins.

The wild dogs that end up surviving without the help of humans would likely do so by forming packs and preying on cats.

Certain species are domesticated and require human interaction. Should this family ignore the hamster and let it go back to being an "animal"? That's called neglect.
