Huckabee: "Maria" Sotomayor Comes From "The Far Left"

Huffington Post   First Posted: 6/26/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Mike Huckabee was ahead of the pack today in releasing a statement criticizing President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court. There was only one problem: he got his target's name wrong.

As Ben Smith points out, Huckabee's original statement identified the nominee as Maria Sotomayor:

The appointment of Maria Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama's campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bipartisan way were mere rhetoric.

The error has been fixed and the full statement can be found on Huckabee's personal website.

The appointment of Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court is the clearest indication yet that President Obama's campaign promises to be a centrist and think in a bi-partisan way were mere rhetoric. Sotomayor comes from the far left and will likely leave us with something akin to the "Extreme Court" that could mark a major shift. The notion that appellate court decisions are to be interpreted by the "feelings" of the judge is a direct affront of the basic premise of our judicial system that is supposed to apply the law without personal emotion. If she is confirmed, then we need to take the blindfold off Lady Justice.

I thought John Ashcroft already TOOK the blindfold off Lady Justice...

Perhaps he just forgot to remove the first name (you know, like John Doe) that was auto-interted into that statement. After all, iut was probably written the same day Souter announced he was retiring.

Or, more likely, perhaps to a white male, who doesn't have the same life experiences as a Latina, one Latina name is just as good as any other! Sonia...Maria...tomato...tomoto...

So the far right Republicans are paranoid psychopaths. Nothing new here.

This is a guy who vehemently vows that scientific evidence is unworthy of belief, but who swallows whole the fabulist production called the Bible (which version/translation I know not) and asserts it to be the "inerrant Word of God." What an insult to even Huckabee's notion of "God" -- thus further proving the idiocy of his position.

Huckabee is the nicest alien I have ever heard speak. Not that I have heard many aliens speak. But if most aliens from outerspace are like Mike then at least we are safe from being invaded and used for scientific experiments.

With a name like Huckabee..... you would THINK this guy would make it a POINT to never mispronounce someone's name.

"Thomas Huxley remarked that "science is organized common sense where many a beautiful theory was killed by an ugly fact." As with any scientific theory, there are potentially many ugly facts that could kill Darwinism. Two of these would be the presence of human fossils and dinosaur fossils side by side, and the existence of adaptations in one species that benefit only a different species. Since no such facts have ever appeared, we continue to accept evolution as true. Religious beliefs, on the other hand, are immune to ugly facts. Indeed, they are maintained in the face of ugly facts, such as the impotence of prayer."

This logic should easily push Huckabee to the fringe, yet here he stands center stage with enormous credibility... Hard to believe

"one cannot be coherently religious and scientific at the same time. That alleged synthesis requires that with one part of your brain you accept only those things that are tested and supported by agreed-upon evidence, logic, and reason, while with the other part of your brain you accept things that are unsupportable or even falsified. In other words, the price of philosophical harmony is cognitive dissonance".

You can't blame the guy for confusing her with his Latina housekeeper. I guess the right-wingers know that fence across Texas isn't working as well as it should and keep the "Mexicans" off the Supreme Court.

Are any of you concerned that Sotomayor might be pro-life? Is she a christian? Huckabee might get his way after all...

Huckabee is a desciple of Jesus, and his idea of the constitutional law and civil liberties is measured by the totally repudiated and discredited religion to which he belongs...and the book of myths that he believes word for word.

He should be vetted as follows.

1. How do you explain the existence of fossil fuels 100+ million years old with your belief that the earth is 5000 years old?

2. How can you justify the teaching of "Creationist mythology" as a science subject to our youngest students given the undeniable need for increased rigorous education in science and technology for the US to compete internationally?

3. How can you reconcile the very clear intention of the constitution to protect the public from religious tyranny, with the fact that you are an intolerant religious tyrant?

4. There are many more questions that would expose Huckabee, Palin or whomever of their ilk should try to lead. Only Hitchens has the guts to ask though.

5. What are you thoughts on "the end days" How will you govern if you feel those days are imminent?
What will happen to unsaved atheists like me?

Marginalize them fast!

You can't really give a rational critique of someone who belongs in an asylum! That's why there are institutionalized. This hick should have been in a straight jacket long ago! Only an idiotic media outlet like Fox Noise would ever consider giving him a medium to spin his psycho babble. He was rejected by his own party! Why is he considered to be relevant? Is it because his bigotry, like that of Hannity, BecK K K, and Oreilly, is a necessity for Fox's continued appeal to their base? You bet!

I agree-
but no one understands evolution in this country. It has not been properly taught in schools for several decades. Then it is often misunderstand to mean the strongest animal survives- a validation for mankind's behavior only, not evolution.

Wellllllll.......I'm not so sure that after 8 years Lady Justice needs a blindfold.
The repugnicans were quite adept at gouging her eyes out every chance they
got.
Who listens to these nefarious creatures anyway? They're dead for at least
12-16 years as a party anyway. By that time they won't be able to keep a gay
Judge off the SCOTUS by their votes.
Cheeeeesch. I'd worry more about how many repugnicans will be sitting in
jail and even if there are enough honest Republicans to RUN for office, any
office!
