I Like ItI Don’t Like It

President Obama announced Tuesday morning that federal appeals court judge Sonia Sotomayor is his nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy.

Praising her as "an inspiring woman" in his introduction, Obama said she had more experience than anyone on the court and has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench," the admiration of lawyers and "the adoration of her clerks." He highlighted the barriers she faced in making it to this position, including her diabetes.

"My heart today is bursting with gratitude," Sotomayor said when she took the podium. The judge gave a touching tribute to her mother, telling the audience, "I have often said that I am all I am because of her, and I am only half the woman she is."

Sotomayor's full remarks:

I was just counseled not to be nervous.

That's almost impossible.

Thank you, Mr. President, for the most humbling honor of my life. You have nominated me to serve on the country's highest court, and I am deeply moved.

I could not, in the few minutes I have today, mention the names of the many friends and family who have guided and supported me throughout my life, and who have been instrumental in helping me realize my dreams.

I see many of those faces in this room. Each of you, whom I love deeply, will know that my heart today is bursting with gratitude for all you have done for me.

The president has said to you that I bring my family. In the audience is my brother, Juan Sotomayor -- he's a physician in Syracuse, New York; my sister-in-law, Tracey; my niece, Kylie -- she looks like me. My twin nephews, Conner and Corey.

I stand on the shoulders of countless people, yet there is one extraordinary person who is my life aspiration. That person is my mother, Celina Sotomayor.

My mother has devoted her life to my brother and me. And as the president mentioned, she worked often two jobs to help support us after dad died. I have often said that I am all I am because of her, and I am only half the woman she is.

Sitting next to her is Omar Lopez, my mom's husband and a man whom I have grown to adore. I thank you for all that you have given me and continue to give me. I love you.

I chose to be a lawyer and ultimately a judge because I find endless challenge in the complexities of the law. I firmly believe in the rule of law as the foundation for all of our basic rights.

For as long as I can remember, I have been inspired by the achievement of our founding fathers. They set forth principles that have endured for than more two centuries. Those principles are as meaningful and relevant in each generation as the generation before.

It would be a profound privilege for me to play a role in applying those principles to the questions and controversies we face today.

Although I grew up in very modest and challenging circumstances, I consider my life to be immeasurably rich. I was raised in a Bronx public housing project, but studied at two of the nation's finest universities.

I did work as an assistant district attorney, prosecuting violent crimes that devastate our communities. But then I joined a private law firm and worked with international corporations doing business in the United States.

I have had the privilege of serving as a federal district court trial judge, and am now serving as a federal appellate circuit court judge.

This wealth of experiences, personal and professional, have helped me appreciate the variety of perspectives that present themselves in every case that I hear. It has helped me to understand, respect and respond to the concerns and arguments of all litigants who appear before me, as well as to the views of my colleagues on the bench.

I strive never to forget the real world consequences of my decisions on individuals, businesses and government.

It is a daunting feeling to be here. Eleven years ago, during my confirmation process for appointment to the Second Circuit, I was given a private tour of the White House. It was an overwhelming experience for a kid from the South Bronx.

Yet, never in my wildest childhood imaginings did I ever envision that moment, let alone did I ever dream that I would live this moment.

Mr. President, I greatly appreciate the honor you are giving me, and I look forward to working with the Senate in the confirmation process. I hope that as the Senate and American people learn more about me, they will see that I am an ordinary person who has been blessed with extraordinary opportunities and experiences. Today is one of those experiences.

Thank you again, sir.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sotomayor, 54, would succeed retiring Justice David Souter. Read more about her judicial and personal history here.

The appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor makes me proud to be an American and a New Yorker.

As a law student who has read a number of Ms. Sotomayor's opinions and briefs, I'll have to join in expressing my excitement!

She is a very even-headed jurist, and does exactly what every good lawyer is tasked to do: apply the facts to the law, and if needed, change laws that are outdated, outmoded, and that no longer accomplish the given task at hand.

I think we can all be happy about yet another positive and seismic shift, thanks to the Obama Administration.

What a great choice. Obama is fulfilling his promises and adding to an outstanding legacy by appointing our first Latino Supreme Court Justice.

How ironic. She was first nominated by George HW Bush. How do the Republicans reconcile that? This choice, however, does not change the balance of power in the Supremes, since there are still 5 hard liners. Unfortunately, the two oldest ones are Ginsburg and Stevens, also on the Progressive end. We'll have to wait until Scalia and Coke Can Thomas retire. That's good enough reason to make sure O gets a second term. The army is ready and willing to trample any candidate the Republicans put forth in 2012.

GHWB picked Soto as a throw-away to NY democrats - it's complicated. She definitely wasn't their first preference.

I'm amused by your nomenclature "hard liners". You mean real jurists who apply the law and not activists who pervert the law to fit their ideologies? I certainly hope you're never on the wrong side of empathy with her.

This was so moving.

Looking at the three of them: President Obama ,VP Biden ,and our new SC nominee Ms.Sotomayor, it's the first time I've seen an accurate and honest representation of America- three regular people that reflect diversity but share a work ethic to get an education and overcome tough experiences.

It was sweet that President Obama kissed her twice and VP Biden hugged her; both genuine and warm expressions. I cannot picture Bush exhibiting any warmth, nor Cheney or Rove etc....they are all brittleness.

To say 'regular people' is an under-statement. Who could have written such a script ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43s9sJnMna8

Fairmindedness and decency are a measure that have not been applied to any Republican appointments to the SC- from the sexual harassment judge Thomas to Scalia who placed Bush into power their nominations have been so transparent and biased.
Thomas is a poor sub for Thurgood Marshall.

I don't know why conservatives are attacking her. I think it may come to a shock for them that her culture (mostly Latinas not just PRs) oppose abortion on all levels. And I think it maybe shocking to liberals who are praising the nomination when they find out her stance on abortion through future actions. Maybe she'll have a neutral stance, whereas rape and incest is the exception. Only time will tell but I have faith that she'll bring balance which is the purpose of the nomination. Why let the scales tilt one way more than the other.

And Joe Biden & Nancy Pelosi are also Catholics - what's your point?

I agree she could be more of a wild card, but I'm sure Obama applied the appropriate litmus test. As a conservative, I'm glad she's kind of a lightweight. I don't see her swaying Kennedy on many issues - maybe the opposite.

I am loving her and her life story and her mom. Her elevation to the highest court in the land will be as historic and inspirational an event as was Obama becoming our first black president.

Another proud moment for America and the Obama administration.

Today is a monumental day in a series of amazing days for the Obama administration. It's not lost on me nor millions around the globe that this administration with all of its history-making has done it again with the nomination of the first Latina to the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor.

President Barack Obama has already elevated a former first lady to Secretary of State, recently announced his nomination for NASA administrator, Charles F. Bolden Jr., who if confirmed by the Senate, will be the first African-American to head the space agency. Plus, there is the top Justice Department official Eric Holder Jr. as attorney general. This is just inside of the 200 day mark of his presidency.

What's significant here is the recognition of talent that spans race, gender, ethnicity, partisanship, etc. I believe after this administration is part of the history books, no other administration would dare return to myopic views when seeking to fill governments top post.

Job well done Mr. President.

It is the first time a Presidential Administration has moved past trite platitudes about American equality to actually walking the talk.

As a Latina I'm happy but especially happy that President Obama keeps picking individuals with a keen intellect; not tokens, not yes people, nor women that have some kind of crush on him (that's right Harriet Miers, and you too Condi).

Obviously a very competent person and an amazing story. But her ruling agaisnt the firefighters bothers me. She invalidated the results because no minorities passed. This test was designed and tested independently in the past to make sure there is no bias - that has been established. As a Asian I find this type of bias against excellence disgusting.

My son is 6.1 and reasonably athletic but he is no match for others physically! When will he get a chance to play in college basketball or football and get admitted through it to good colleges because they have to fill an Asian quota? Or when will a judge invalidate college selections because no Asians passed it?

Are we going to compromise excellence everywhere?

It was not based on excellance, but rather on a test that was fair for all. I followed this case very closely. I know of companies who hire test createros to slant question that favor one ethnicity over others, and it is not by accident. Her ruling was absolutely correct that having the ability to pass a test is not the same as the ability to perform the job function and the test was slanted to favor a specific group. Bravo for her she will be an excellant jurist on the Supreme Court.

I saw this issue debated on Chris Matthews' Show. He held your view till both sides presented their arguments. He was not so sure afterwards. Believe me, the case is not as simple as it sounds.

That was Matthews' conclusion after the debate.

When affirmative action was put into play the majority sought other ways of discriminating and testing was a result. My ex-husband is a decorated retired Marine who recently retired from the Sheriff department and for years he was passed over because of a required test to become a sergeant that he did not pass. It was the majorities way of shutting out minorities - much like the TAAS test prevent many from graduating high school.

This 'testing' became a way to ensure that the majority could remain in charge. It goes without saying that most of them had access to the test prior to taking it thus furthering their chances of passing. If we only selected those who passed a test - who would we have left to actually fight the fires, capture the crooks or slam dunk a basketball? Those who pass the test are usually not the hardest workers; they are just better paid.

President Barack Obama is exposing us to all shapes, sizes and colors of intellect. Sonia Sotomayor is more than qualified to be a member of the SCOTUS and her selection represents that melting pot that america was founded on. It is my prayer that your 6.1 son will realize his dream of becoming a great basketballer not because he is Asian but just because he is good!
