I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sotomayor

Newsweek:

Confirmation hearings are inevitably an invitation to behave badly. Something about the bright lights of the Senate Judiciary Committee brings out the worst in people. Legal thinkers who are otherwise reasonable and intelligent somehow become great big puddles of snarling, hateful id. I think Democrats made a mistake when they accused Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito of being misogynists and racists at their confirmation hearings. And Republicans are poised to make the same mistake when they attack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, as a "liberal judicial activist of the first order who thinks her own personal political agenda is more important that the law as written," as Wendy Long, of the Judicial Confirmation Network, did today. (Don't those phrases ever get old? Don't these people own a thesaurus?)

I am really happy to see a group of smirking idiots atacking an accomplished, intelligent person who in face embodies the American Dream! Sotomayor's life IS the ideal so often held before the poor and the disenfranchised: "Look - you can do this in America! You can be anything if you have the ability and work hard."
She actually DID IT - and the morons of the GOP will be losing votes with every word spoken against this woman. They are already losing Hispanis support, and will be losing all immigrants, all poor people, all minorities, everyone who works for a living and hopes to better themselves.

The GOP has around 21% of voters now - when they are finished with Sotomayor, they will be at maybe 12-10% and she will be a Supreme Court Justice.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Alito: "My family’s immigrant experience shaped judicial outlook"

Via Glenn Greenwald (and one of his readers) comes a moment from Samuel Alito’s confirmation hearings that will either silence Sonia Sotomayor’s conservative critics or expose their hypocrisy for what it is.

In an exchange with Sen. Tom Coburn, who had asked Alito to discuss how his personal experiences shows that "he cared for the little guy," Alito said that his family’s experience as immigrants influenced his outlook on immigration cases.

Alito:

"And that’s why I went into that in my opening statement. Because when a case comes before me involving, let’s say, someone who is an immigrant — and we get an awful lot of immigration cases and naturalization cases — I can’t help but think of my own ancestors, because it wasn’t that long ago when they were in that position…

When I get a case about discrimination, I have to think about people in my own family who suffered discrimination because of their ethnic background or because of religion or because of gender. And I do take that into account."

IMO, you give some in the GOP too much credit with the statement of misguided attack on Judge Sotomayor. This is not misguided, this is who they are; against anyone who does not meet their characterization of who and what America is. Don't be fooled that this group within the GOP is not against you if you fail to fit their so-called ideal classification of what determine true and patriotic Americans regardless of what success you obtain. If you have one or more of these characteristics: educated woman, non-white, different sexual preference, different religious preference, different opinion, etc., then it's open season to try and keep you "in your place" regardless of how qualified you are by berating your success as something other than what it is. ((affirmative action, political correctness) This group thrive on sound-bites and will take any and all statements out of content and context to meet their need. They enjoy projecting their own shortcomings and bigotry towards their fellowman on others. Finally, they present their outrage as if it is the voice of the people with statements like "I speak for America".

Diversity is the solution not the problem. We need more minorities, more women, and a greater variety of experiences on our court. Until you can see the law as it is experienced by real people in their daily lives you are not qualified to be a judge. Law is the cousin of justice but it does not guarantee justice. Thus judges are appointed to make sure that both the law is followed and justice is done.

Very well said. Law and justice goes hand in hand and can not operate alone.

The difference between justice and law boils down to this: justice is for the rich; the law is for the poor.

Let them kick and scream all through the nominations. They will just insult to many woman and Hispanic voters to the point that they will never come back. I have been on line reading some of her opinions, and have found them thoughtful, well reasoned and certainly not liberal. She appears to be moderate in her decision making process, and would be an asset to the Supreme Court. come on Republicans, continue your Pat Buchacanan and Rush Limbaugh histrionics. You are giving us more laughs than you realize.

Pat Buchanan said that the Sotomayor Nomination is the result of Affirmative Action IE Reverse Racism & that the Real Victims of all this are White Men.

I saw that, and couldn't believe even Pat Buchanan would go there on live tv. That's all he's holding onto, his seething racism. What a pathetic show Morning Joe is to showcase this man and his hate.

When you see any white person yell reverse racism, that of course means that they are the ones who are racist like a motha.

Ditto, Monte.
When "reverse" precedes "discrimination", the intent is always to portray white victimhood. Unintended is the inherent acknowledgement of forward discrimination.

But Pat Buchanan IS a victim!

...of genetics. He was born with a congenital brain defect that causes him to see the world through a paranoid and xenophobic prism. It's a horrible malady. There ought to be a telethon.

For more than 30 years, white men have dismissed every achievement by a hard working woman or ethnic minority as affirmative action. Yes, the over achiever did take affirmative action when they worked twice s hard to overcome barriers like poverty, environment and historical bias.

From now on, I am going to rephrase the affirmative action argument by pointing out that anyone of any gender or ethnicity who demonstrates the willingness to rise to the top of their chosen profession should declare that they took positive (affirmative) steps (actions) to achieve a goal.

Thank God for Pat Buchanan.

It takes a really courageous man to rip the veil over the hypocritical treatment of rich white males in our country. For centuries we’ve been subject to the most insidious forms of oppression. Finally a voice speaks up for us!

Herded into a small group of universities – Harvard, Yale, Princeton – for our higher education. Shut out from the best jobs. Forced to live in enclaves – some would call them ghettos – Chapaqua, Shaker Heights, Greenwich, the Main Line, the Gold Coast. Sometimes living inside the gates of oppression. Made to endure subtle but corrosive stereotyping about our love of music and sports. For God’s sake I DON’T play golf and not I DON”T go to the opera. And many of us don’t.
Like Brother Pat, I have a dream that one day, we will not be judged by the color of our skin but the contents of our wallet. And that on that glorious day, a rich white male might become president of the United States. That we will see more white men in our Senate and House of Representatives. And that major companies will offer rich white males a fair opportunity to be CEO or to hold other senior positions. I have a dream. A dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
